James replied to Russell Cissell's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.

Must be a western type craft?

Shane, Sanding and buffing the wood closes up the pores. So it will take less oil. So even with WT you will use less product. Using that type of sanding is a selective process. It depends on how well the deck was laid , what type of finish, what type of wood and the age. The deck I just did and buffed on the Pessure Tek site took plenty of oil. You have to Vacuum very well. Cedar is a real pain after major sanding.

What is most important in a deck restoration
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I think the point of restoration is to give the wood integrity . Which is done with oils which in turn stops the aging process and gives longevity. Maintaining the surface and the integrity of the wood is a scheduling issue after restoration. I have restored many decks that are on scheduled maint. The first finish is the most important so if you start out correctly it's a maint. issue. No need for restoration. -

I find on a job like that sanding off the finish on the top levels to be more productive. -

About 6 years ago I ran an add for DIY"s in the local large city paper. I don't advertise in it for my biz. That time I thought I would sell products or prep the decks or a consultant fee . All calls wanted their decks done !! I got killed in request for quote's ( large paper). No one, not one wanted to do it ?? Funny thing happened at the local hardware store last Sat. An old friend yelled out my name to say hello. Then he came over to talk( the salesman was with him) we were talking about the Yankee's and he had a SPF can in his hand. So I asked if he was doing his deck. Yes he was and asked my opinion. We chatted and he left. The salesman came to me and asked where he went. I told him I led him down a different path. They sorta of went nut's talking about me in the store ( truevalue). They know nothing about decks in these stores or about what they sell to the consumer. -
Experts can be reliably found in their preferred habitat of conferences in luxurious settings. They are extremely territorial. While vehemently protecting their own narrow areas of expertise, they are never too shy to sing about life, the universe, and everything. Experts never have conflicts of interest, and if asked about these, their feathers become ruffled.

Matt it doesn't bother me that there is alot of new competition because I'm still here. I advertise twice a year spring and fall one ad sometimes two. I pulled up to a quote today driving my 1987 Toyota panel van . Still had my oily clothes on from yesterday. Fell a sleep in the van last night! On the way over I didn't have any breakfeast so I picked up a quart of Colt 45( in a paper bag of course). Gee , I thought the home owner's wouldn't be home? But I was measuring up the house and had to take a leak. So there I was peeing and the curtain swung open and up came the window ! Who are you? the owner said; the Power Pee'er, I, I mean Power Washer you called. I gave the name of the other Power Washer who had and Ad in the paper and got out of there pronto !!. Went home showered changed got my nice truck went back and got the job and they told me about my competitor. LOL
