IPE (hey beth or rod)
James replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I simply do not believe you get 4 dollars or 4000 dollars to do a 1000 sqft Ipe deck. You make 400 hundred an hour ? The top stripping price is 3 dollars an hour in the industry. Preping Ipe is not difficult . I think I'll come to Pa and follow you around and charge 2 dollars a Sqft for Ipe and make 200 and hour -
Need stain suggestion for my deck...
James replied to PLD's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Some of my better looking decks are clear RS. The grey color is dirt and mildew. When washed it's not grey. And when oiled many times gets a rich deep natural wood look. Sometimes a gallon of LB for a hint of UV. It keeps the Melaknowma away.. -

James replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
4 dollars a sqft to prep IPE is absurd ( unless stripping maybe). I've been taking care of hardwoods longer than anyone on the boards. And have maintained everyone I've done. Some of the statements I read here are ridiculous. -

Applying ReadySeal?
James replied to ACSTravis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Dried oil on screens = nightmare. On Brick I use Acetone or what Shane said with X. You have to do it a few times because the color has dried on the brick. The brushing will loosen the little transoxides -

In the last year I saw U2, Steve Winwood, ZZ , BB,Willy, kennyRoger's Xmas Show, Crisy Hines and Pretenders, Trisha Yearwood, Allison Krause and Union Station, Howling Wolf and other shows. Got tickets for James Brown today ( he's 70) "See'em before he die's tour". What was the Worst show you ever saw? Mine was Lou Reed people threw bottles at him he was so off and everybody walked out. Willy was brutal once ( he was screwed up). -

Applying ReadySeal?
James replied to ACSTravis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Appling Ready seal is directly related to the specie of wood ( soft or hard) and the age. And if is vertical or horizontal and is thickness. Knowing how much per sqft of oil it wll take is key to knowing weather to spray or to brush?? -
Certain garage door manufactured materials are terible to remove grease stains from. If it was from the opener or springs it would be in a consistant line. The material behind some coating's is very absorbent. This make's for difficult removal.
-
Also diesel trucks will put that type of stain from there exhaust. Pain to remove.

Jeff, I have noticed these shake type designs not holding up well too. And the home owner's pay a bundle for the look. I think the material is to thick. I have seen mildew getting into the surface of a three year old job.

Anyone familiar with ABR products?
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It is sort like using a heavy weight oil combined with a Paint pigment. A true semi transparent stain. The pigment fills the voids. It's like using molasses on your pancakes instead of maple syrup. -

James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I tell them up front about the smell( customers). The results are I"ve saved the customer from rebuilding their deck. My first decks in the wood biz are ABR"s which I still maintain. I use it based on the needs of the wood. The rebulking and lubrication of the wood fibers is unmatched. The National Parks service selected ABR to save and perserve The Totem Poles in our park systems. The acid can be used on weathered wood but is not great. It is good as a nuetrailizor and for tannins. -

Yes , I use ABR. Some of the best stuff for restoring old weathered wood. It smells but the results are worth it. Very pricey! Some of my best restoration jobs are with ABR. I did one two weeks ago.
