WTW, Rain & Scheduling
James replied to Proclean's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.

WTW, Rain & Scheduling
James replied to Proclean's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
PAUL, how many maint. coats or re-application of WTW have you done? I have had the worst rain related year to date and have considered WTW. But finishes that settle below the surface of the wood make me feel uncomfortable for future conisderation. This is the problem with all hardwood products after a few appications of the sealer . The finish must be removed and it's very difficult to do so. -

Ipe.. great wood, but....
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Rick,no stain that is the Ipe. They ripped up a Redwood deck. The deck in the distance is a 5 year old ipe which I stripped( above stairs). Direct ocean front property. Also stripped cabana roof(cedar) and redwood floor. Off to oil 3000 sqft of PT. -

I guess I am a hardwood guru- Been taking care of hardwods for Ten years. Developed processes for hardwoods and my own oiling methods. Acetone is highly bad for your health for the amount that must be used and big bucks . Weathering is the simplest way to solve the penitration issue. Let is sit for 4 to 6 months. I have a deck ( ipe) waiting till spring. Its 2 months old and still beads water with out any sealer. This type of ipe I wait almost a year because its 3.5 inches wide with a radius edge. It takes longer to open up and in the shade. If I let the wood sit 6 months I can put in one coat of a product 12 months 2 coats. Nothing happens to IPe by working with it. -

Looks beautiful ! make your photo's larger ? -
Western Red Cedar and that color produce orange. If there is enough room in the wood a med brown color will tone it down.

What kind of "Home Improvements" do you do on your own house?
James replied to Celeste's question in The Club House
I do absolutely nothing. My wife just see's picture's of what I do?? She does everything- she built a field stone wall , built a 200 ft cedar fence, blue stone patio ( Two) and spends every dime I make on the yard. My kid's can't play in their own yard because of the Garden Gestapo ( my wife). She take's inventory every morning of every plant , flower and to see if each bug has a Green card. She's comming Bye bye............ -

Cedar Millglaze?
James replied to seymore's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Rick that is the biggest bull and twisting of terminology of ever seen.Just maybe the sugar's get heated up and leave a glaze. What happens to sugar when you heat it? How much sugar makes up tree's? Side note: My buddy has a house in RI ( beach front) was suppose to do decks but do to the weather could not go do. I find out he used a water based product that was highly recommended. COBOTS SPF( on new mahog) what a downer>>>><<<<? -
Cedar Millglaze?
James replied to seymore's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
When cedar tree's have sapling's. The saplings feed on the extracts from the mommy tree. When the mommy tree gets removed by the lumber jacker and brought to the slicer (mill). The lignin gland's still have an abundance of extracts to feed it's saplings. These look milky and shiney when chopped and sliced for human's and building. -

Would you attend a Grime Scene Round Table event?
James replied to Beth n Rod's question in The Club House
most likely - As long as the effen rain stops and you have a support group for rain induced depression....... -
In the last 2 months the rain has killed me. Last Sat no rain was perdicted and it poured. Monday we had storms and last night it stormed. It's time to rethink putting so much effort in this area.?And the last 5 years have been the same............

Re- Thinking Woodcare
James replied to James's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The problem is that's what I get the calls for (Wood). Hardwoods dry in 12 hours (15%) Mohog and Ipe' this is good. Cedar blows and stay's wet for ever. I can't give it up . It's a thought though..................... -
In the next couple of years I'm shifting to the very very wealthy. I'm in the door now for complete exterior maint. between 1 to 2 k a job per year. I was working last week direct water front ( refered for ipe 2000 sqft) came away with washing and taking care of property. And a referal( got job without quoting). 50 of these I can manage with my other stuff and never have to advertise.

For All Southern Woodies
James replied to Don Phelps's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The cypress I do would not take anything. Then I tried the Red wood only oil. That gave it a little color. At 5 years its starting to take some. The deck was sanded to remove a floor varnish?
