WoodTux Alternatives
James replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
These products do form a thin coat or a barrier. They clogg the wood pores. Thats because they are made up with drying oils. Linseed - Tung... I have never seen a good job on cedar with these products. Its always over applied. Because the wood was to new. If the wood as 2 years old I could see it work. -

What do you call it then ? I just stripped something off a deck that laid on top of the wood ? Maybe it was a coating or a hard shell ? -

Remember These products are drying oils . That means they penitrate only enough so they form a film. On cedar you have to remove the fish to do maint. On hard woods you might get away with a couple of applcations before yopu have to strrip the finish off. If you use a penitrating oil Like Ready seal you never have to strip and the wood is easier to maint. and it gets better looking as the wood ages. -

One Year Old
James replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I do alot of new construction and most of my work is different type's of cedar- After 10 year's of trying different methods of waiting and cleaning- There are no benifits to sealin g cedar right away unless you plan on using a film type sealer- When using a penitrating sealer I use bleach to clean and wait a year before sealing- Using this method I have no problems- Cedar needs to go through many wetting and drying cycle's (weather) and to lose some of its natural oils and resins before they can be replaced. -

Do a test spot. The only way to learn is to do a test spot s and to see what works. -
This is why I wait a year to seal cedar. It solves the problems. Trying to seal right away cause more problems.

On new cedar the oil goes in and the color stays on top. So it washes away. Depending on what type of cedar it takes a year or two sometimes for it to penitrate correctly. I have one cedar deck that took four years to take oil and color. 2 by 8 no knots..........

James replied to andye629's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
ITs simple oils are the best for preservation of wood and maint. Films only keep water out. If I was a filmer I wood use Thomsons because you can maint. it easier than all the other films and it does the same thing. The thing about films is the longer it last the harder it is to get off. TWP- RS-ABR These product preserve wood. -

Cleaning between cleaning

what finish is on the deck? A little bleach and soap and a brush and rinse. If its a penitrating finish put a lite cote on. If its a filmer do nothing. Bleach and soap works better for maint. I've gone back and forth many time's on this issue because I do annual maint. -

Are you stripping a finish or removing weathered wood? I use a brush made for cleaning stone on my milwalky also will last many decks. -

If the job is that big have her pay you to do a sample on the spindles. This will tell you and her if it can be done correctly and to try different methods. I am starting to charge for difficult strip jobs. I was at a test spot for 2 hours the other day. The more I go to paint stores the less I think they know unless it 's on the interior of the house, -
