Gordon- With a product like Olympic when it's time to redo do you strip then re-seal?
-
Joe in the long run a deck treated with Ready seal vs Olympic will make the deck last longer and maint is easier. In 2 to 3 years the deck will be black and you will have to strip it off with a product that forms a film like Olympic. The surface may not look good but RS is better for the wood preservation.

Which sealers do you use? How many partial pails do you have?
James replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Wolmans has a good marketing program and it is easier to get , same with cabot. Starting in a week every paint store and hardware store in CT. will have a CABOT flag flying on them. Using wolmans is like throwing minerial spirits with a color on wood. -
The largest tent and sail cleaning company uses bleach. I watch them do it.
-
Home Depot carries a higher % bleach now . I personally have not used it. It's by all there Zep products .

In every book and I have them all the forest labs say's use bleach !! Even the Finish Line article you sent me said clean with bleach. It points out in some article's which kind of cleaners their are . This is for the do it your selfer type article. I tell people to use wolman products if there doing the job them self. This is also the type of info that will confuse the consumer. 3 year old cedar deck!! I'm not using a pressure washer I put down the cleaner(pre-carb) I rinsed the deck ? (hose) It still looks like crap? I use brightner looks better ? I use an opaque stain ( peels in 6 months) ? What happened ? Good question for advanced woodcare !!

Need Help Marketing this service, Window Cleaning
James replied to dlamontm98's topic in Window & Gutter Cleaning
This is one service you have to practice over and over to get good at and get call backs. Glass is the only surface were both sides have to be cleaned. And its the easiest to see the mistakes. Its also the quickest to get into. If you get good at it the word gets around fast thats your marketing. -
Can't get it to work

Mildew and algae on wood deck
James replied to csoldier's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
First how bad is it ? Sometimes is easier to blow off the mold with plan water first. Take a layer off then use a cleaner. I use bleach and sometimes I still use precarbs. In this case I would use bleach it works better in the removal of mold . -
I think he should be in the hall of fame . And not be allowed back in baseball. Nobody buy his book ! And boo him as he gets inducted.

RESIDENTIAL- Offer them a schedule for those services . Then do reminders. I find they don't like service contracts. Window cleaning is great for this because it's spring and fall or once a year. Wash the house every other year. I do deck maint. every year around the pool and patio furniture must be done every year. Composite decks must be done every year( don't let mold and bacteria grow inside ) It's gotta be done and your always work on a new solution for something. Roofs every 5 years. ect. ect. ect.

First I wood do a test spot to see if I had to strip it ?Clean and seal (9 or 10 gallons RS )- 1000.00 - Strip I'd be at 1500.00 400 + steps 15 x 5= 75 spindles 175 x 3 = 525 Total feet 1000 I start at a dollar a foot and move to a dollar fifty fo stripping

How do weather wood.
James replied to charlie's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
If you apply a strong tea solution let it dry. Then make a solution of ferrous ammonium sulfate, and apply that. This will achieve different shades of grey with how strong you make your solutions. This is from a book by The Forest Labs-Finishes for exterior wood. -

Bleaching- using bleach and leaving it on to long will speed up the aging process and there is another product not mentioned yet but I can't think of it . Sorry.? What I have done and because I do yearly maint. I let the wood age for the year, . -
I do a mild bleach wash. Then 2 lite coats ready seal. I do not see any more pressure treated decks on homes over 300k. More composite all the time. A few deck builders I get refered by stopped using PT all to geather because of CCA and future lawsuits.

Tony this thread was all over the place. This year I did 2 cedar fences. They had to be sprayed and brushed in. I also see a few red wood fences and I am Quoting a deck that has Ipe' lattice work all over the place around a stone garden. Some of the stuff I see blows my mind at the amont of money spent in my area.
