In a recent Cleaner Times article Everett Abrams use the word "reputable" to decribe PWNA contractors. His article neglected to mention the fact that there are 100's if not 1000's of "reputable" contractors that are not PWNA members. The article was about jobs DIYers should not tackle, yet it turned into a promo for the PWNA and a slap in the face to those whom are not members. Being a member of ANY organization does not make you more "reputable" than any other contractor. Your reputation is built on the quality and reliability of services. It was not that long ago we had this debate on this very BBS and Everett stated he didn't feel that being a member of an ORG. made your company "reputable". Cleaner Times staffers may feel that such verbage is okay since it's partnered with the PWNA and it's writing heavily slants that way,but I would venture a guess that a lot of subcribers are not PWNA members. As a non PWNA member and a Cleaner Times subscriber I feel that allowing such commentary hurts the industry and is unfair to non PWNA members businesses. It paints a picture of inexperience and poor credibilty for non PWNA members that is neither warranted nor deserved. If you are a non PWNA member;do you appreciate these kind of comments being directed at your company? I will be writing Cleaner Times to express my dislike of such slanted comments in their articles. I'm sure this will be edited or pulled because it's not on the PC side of the fence, but it's just me.......MR. NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT.

Beth, The article was great until that last little bit. It was a good read and definitely touched on things I try to pass on to my customers.
-
Beth, Yes, it does appear in the PWNA today section, however, the article for November covering waste water only discussed that topic. It never strayed to mention how much more "reputable" PWNA companies are that reclaim. The "reputable" commentary is not required. This magazine isn't sold on news stands to every Tom,**** and Harry home owner. It's a publication for those of us in the industry. As Jeff states;"I in no way feel that the JUST because someone is a member of the PWNA that they are "more reputable" than another contractor." Before your company joined the PWNA wasn't it already "reputable"? When your company was away from the PWNA for a short time wasn't your company still "reputable"? The fact is; If your company meets licensing requirements for your area, pays it's taxes, has required insurance and provides quality, reliable services to it's customers, it is "reputable". Jon, This isn't a personal thing with Everett. I just don't see the need to paint a picture of unreliablity and poor credibilty for non PWNA members in an idustry wide publication. If this had appeared in the PWNA newsletter I would have never said a word because it is sent to members only.

South Florida - Wood Restoration
squirtgun replied to Washaway's topic in Contractor Help Wanted - Job Leads
I believe you'll find the added cost is something you will have to eat part of. We have been run off of properties when we mentioned reclaiming. You have to do it to protect your business....so just do it when/where you have to. Our system is very basic and puts the filtered water into the sanitary sewer. To dump to the sanitary sewer you need to find out what your local water authority requires filtered out. In our case it's heavy sediment, oil and grease. This can be accomplished with oil booms, berms and sump pumps, without spending thousands of $$$.A number of the properites we clean have drywells with sand traps and filtered reclaim water can be dumped there to further satisfy the EPA and water company. They own the water, it if I keep it on their property they still own it.If you reclaim and transport the water you risk fines for hauling hazardous waste. Reclaiming or meeting the requirements set forth in the CWA doesn't have to be expensive,it just has to work. Why let someone scare you into buying a system that costs thousands of $$$? I've seen the comment on this BBS in the past that "berms and sump pumps don't look professional".It's no different than stringing vacuboom segments and it accomplishes the same task. -
Morgan, We'll be praying for Shelby and the rest of the rest of you during this trying time.Keep faith big guy,God makes miracles happen all the time. We'll add her to the prayer list sunday. If you need to talk give me a call.

How do YOU clean..?
squirtgun replied to Matt in Dallas TX's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The chances of me doing a deck anytime in the future are slim. I stopped chasing deck restorations in Jan 2005. I truley love doing them ,but since I can't find customers willing to pay for quality work, I focus on selling other jobs. If I do find a customer who will accept the prices I quote now, they will get the the best work their money can buy them. 7 quotes this year for deck ranging from 500sq.ft to 4200sq.ft and not one home owner accepted the bid. I have used stripper on older unstained decks. It does work, but there are less aggressive cleaner that can be used to accomplish the same task. I prefer percarbs on wood that has never been stained or sealed. Yes, I have also used bleach with great results. -

Jarrod, Just about everyone on this BBS has or considered using bleach. It's another tool in the arsenal in wood restoration. IMO stripper is over kill for wood that has never had stain or sealer on it. -
I have heard a lot of people say they feel it is. We have a Largo machine that has been a work horse. It was a sound investment for us and they have been great on the customer service side as well. I think it's a person preference thing. Most equipment companies offer their equipment with similar pumps and engines and mount it in frame work designed by them.

At 12:05 today a tornado swept through downtown Sylvester. We had been in the area hit about 10 minutes earlier. No serious injuries have been reported, but there is some property damage. I'll have pics up later when I have time to resize them. We are going to see who needs/wants help cleaning up. Pic 1: The front of a dry cleaners that stopped just short of completely being blown out. Pic 2: The drive-thru at one of the banks. There were cars trapped under the ceiling pieces that fell. Pic #: A large metal work shelter at the county power company(40'wide x 60' long x 20' tall)twisted into a ball on thrown over the fence. The radio tower(150') at the sheriff's office came down onto several patrol cars and damaged the roof of the jail. They have brought in a mobile command unit frrom another county to re-establish communications for emergency services.Even without communications our small town police, fire and sheriff's office rocked. They completed a business to business sweep checking for injuries minutes after the tornado hit. With no power in the area they has patrol cars at all major intersections directing traffic and set up a perimeter around the most severely damaged areas. Lots of broken glass at businesses downtown. The bank in the pics suffered some serious damage to the roof in addition to the drive-thru.Some homes in the area have trees through them and a mechanics shop had 1 entire brick wall blown out.

Adrian, Thanks for the offer. Some of the buildings that were hit will have to be demolished.A few of them are close to 100 yrs old it's a shame they will have to be leveled, but the worst damaged were the ones that had become and eyesore anyway. You are actually about 190+ miles north of me.

Keep in mind that is the powdered form of chlorine. You can also mix it with break fluid and make a nice smoke bomb. Warning:This is not a safe activity. You assume all risks involved with these kind of experiments.

Walmart is another. If you are unhappy with the policies of these companies email or write them.We put the money in their pockets,we can take it away just as quickly by boycotting them if they refuse our requests. We send CHRISTmas cards.I respect the traditions of other peoples religions,so it doesn't hurt them to respect mine.To date I don't know of one single customer who was offended by our CHRISTmas crads.

The following equipment along with the business name business name is for sale. I need an honest value of what the equipment is worth present day. I know the set up was $10k new. 2- step truck washing machine(unknown manufacturer) I assume it's cold water only.Electronic switching from soap to acid.13hp honda w/general pump.6x12 Hallmark enclosed trailer and accessories. 14 months old. ] Along with the equipment is the potential for a bi-weekly truck washing account. I have an idea of what I think is a fair price for this, but would like other opinions. Can this systen be used with a 1 step soap?

Don, You can build a rig with hotwater for much less than 15K. Give us an idea of what you want in a rig and some or most of us can tell you where to buy it and how to set it up in a working rig.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from the products you mentioned. They are not good for the wood. -
It appears that *** has been hijacked. If you go there DO NOT click on the image that appears. It is really sad that some piece of trash has to to ruin the hard work and efforts of a BBS community.

I read about the tornados this morning.I was wondering about your family up there. I see Van is posting so he must be safe. The hijackers message has been removed from ***.The link led to site that will lock up your PC.

When I worked in the tire manufacturing business the company had airplane hanger coating put down in the high forklift traffic areas. The entire coating is about 1/8" thick, but tough as nails and if memory serves me about $65 a sq.ft. The stuff carried a 10 yr warranty, and they company was out about every 3 to 6 months to do repairs on chips and breaks.

Unloader partially bypassing
squirtgun replied to Mike Williamson's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Mike, It sounds like you are pulling air.We had a nylon fitting that caused a similar problem last year.It compressed over time from the pressure of the clamp make it almost flat, there was just enough air passing to give the unloader a problem. I had gone over the machine a dozen times making sure all clamps and hoses were secure. The final time is when I noticed the fitting was smashed.
