deck question
Stuart Nabors replied to chriswatson's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Recommendation for removing that white film from pressure treated that apparently was over bleached? I have one that needs to be restored....- 11 replies

I have winterized my machine in years past, but I have worked through the winter this year. Not a lot of garage space. Any suggestions for ways to insulate the pump so I can leave my trailer out in sub-freezing temps?

Well, I won't frown! That's a good tip....thanks

thanks for the troubleshooting help.....I think I'm back in business. Not enough incoming water flow, best I can figure.

Any ideas why the ball on my downstream injector would continue to get stuck? After this first started happening, I replaced the spring, ball, and o-ring....but no help. I put on a new injector, and it's still happening. I can pop the ball loose when it gets stuck.....but every time I start back up, the ball gets stuck again. Sound familiar to anyone? Thanks!

My problem is that the product I have used (from my local supplier--their own gutter cleaning product that I use 1:1) mixed strong enough to clean the gutters often seems to streak the siding. I apply with a soft brush, and the drips, which I don't seem to be able to avoid, definitely leave noticeable streaking when they hit the siding of the house. Any advice on how to avoid this?

Sealer Choice for HVLP
Stuart Nabors replied to Stuart Nabors's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thanks, Kevin. I have been able to get a ton of information on hvlp hardware using the search function....I'm more interested in hearing about what to expect from different sealers--esp water base--with hvlp. Do you use floetrol to thin the semitransparent stuff? -
Sealer Choice for HVLP
Stuart Nabors posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I'm working on an HVLP setup (remote cup and gun run from a portable compressor) for '08 and am curious to know what sealers guys have had success with (or not) running HVLP. I've had success with pre-VOC Olympic Max but have run no water-based product through the HVLP. Also curious about semi transparents. What works with HVLP, what doesn't? Thanks! -
Regulators and Filtering Air for HVLP Remote Cup
Stuart Nabors posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I'm working on setting up a new spray system for the spring. I'm running an HVLP gun with a remote cup from my portable compressor. I'm wondering about whether I need to be filtering the air from the compressor before it gets to the remote cup and where to set up my regulators. My compressor is not oilless, so I'm guessing I need a filter for water and oil? Any recommendations? I want something that isn't cumbersome that can be installed in-line. Also, where do I want to put the filters? Closer to the compressor or the remote cup? As far as the regulators go, I already have one on the compressor and one on the remote cup. Do I also need a regulator with the filter on the air line and/or on the gun itself? I've heard 8-10 psi coming out of the compressor and at the remote cup...does that sound right? lots of questions here I know, but this is new territory for me.... thanks!!! -
replacing wood sections on aggregate driveways
Stuart Nabors posted a question in Residential Pressure Washing
Has anyone replaced the 2 X 4's that fill what I guess I'd call the expansion joints on aggregate driveways? I have a customer who wants a couple of them replaced, but I've never done it. I'm wondering what holds them in place....the friction between the sections? or something else? also, could pvc be used instead of wood? what would you charge? thanks! -
Remote Cup-HVLP
Stuart Nabors replied to Stuart Nabors's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thanks, Rich. Less than $100? The conversion guns and remote cup setups I've been looking at have been approx $300, not including the cost of the compressor of course. I was told I could get by with a 3 horsepower compressor, wasn't sure about cfm's. I guess I'm not that worried about the speed....I need the sprayer just for vertical stuff, not the horizontal. Is HVLP effective for that kind of use? (just my pickets and rails?) The turbine-driven units I've been looking at are like this one: Campbell Hausfeld 2-Turbine High Volume / Low Pressure Painter I think something like this might fit the bill, but I'm willing to make the investment in the remote cup setup if it's worth the extra $$. My concern with the one-quart cup is capacity and ease of operation--the gun with the cup attached looks like it would have a harder time reaching some areas than the gun in the remote cup setup. Also, I haven't seriously considered the pressure pot because it seems like overkill a little, and the lack of an agitator in a 2.5 gallon container concerns me. Thanks again! -
Remote Cup-HVLP
Stuart Nabors posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Can anyone advise me about the use of a remote cup setup for HVLP? I generally use sealing pads (Shurline seven inch and eighteen inch from the Sealer Store) for my horizontals....I find they make quick work with little prep time, but I've been looking into an HVLP setup to spray just the vertical stuff. I'd like (obviously) to keep the investment to minimum $$ and have looked at a some low dollar (under $200) turbine-driven, one-quart guns (I like the Campbell Hausfield upgraded to an NBC gun), but I'm worried about being able to spray at angles. I don't currently have a compressor, but I've considered buying one to set up a conversion gun with a remote cup (2 quart)....any advice most appreciated!
