It has been so hot and dry this summer in Houston that mud dobbers are moving their nests from the ground on to houses. They build a mud nest generally in corners especially between the ceiling and wall.
UI generally hit the nest with one of my down streaming tips so I don't damage the paint or stucco but there is always a brown stain left behind. Anyone ever figure out how to get this stain to go away? If it is on a flat wall a soft bristled brush does okay but when it's in a corner I just never have much luck!

I get my chems at soapgoods.com. You save a lot by buying 50 lbs or more and it is at your door in a few days. They have sodium percarb, oxalic and sodium hydroxide to name a few....

I figure it would corrode the reel the way if corrodes qc and tips and such.... I guess if I run enough fresh water at the end it won't be a big deal.

I am looking into a new rig which does not have a stainless hose reel...if I downstream through it with a house wash strength mix will it ruin the reel and hoses? I also have an injector I built into one of my guns and I never have a problem with it but I have to bring my mix with me....
What are your experiences?

Now I use google maps for most of my estimates. If it is a simple house wash I don't even need t use that. If it is more complicated or particularly large then I will do the estimate in person as long as the HE seems like a buyer and not just a shopper. My pitch allows me to close around 80% of my leads....I use a simple close - "The total price for your project is (not would be) $$$, and I am available Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon...which one of those works better for you?" About half the time they just choose A or B and that's that. Sometimes they will ask for a different day....no problem. Sometimes they give me an excuse...they have to talk to their spouse or they are getting more estimates or something...If I really want the jon I will just ask "Did you have another price in mind?" A lot of times they will say "well last time someone did it for $$." or "I thought it would be more like $$." Now I can explain why my service is more expensive or negotiate! or both. I their expectation is way too low I know I don't need to bother calling back!

I see a few places online where sodium per carbonate and oxalic acid powders are very inexpensive but will they work as well as the products from pressure-tek or other specialty chemicals?

12% is so expensive around here....I go to Ramteq in a pinch but it is almost $6 a gallon! Thanks for the tip!

This year has started off really busy! I got 8 calls yesterday....and my advertising budget is about $500 a year! Investing in more equipment, customer management software and work clothes. Hope the weather stays nice and Obamacare doesn't damper any spending!

What chemicals do you use for residential driveways, walkways, and patios? On most of my projects I don't use anything pre-wash but I'll downstream a weak bleach mix after cleaning on really dirty projects. What do you all use/recommend pre-wash and post-wash on typical residential concrete?

I've bartered for several things with fine results...got my head gaskets replaced, my machine worked on, my house cleaned when I moved out, advertising. As long as you make sure you're trading apples to apples and not getting sour grapes I think it is a great idea.

Quotes are always free but I still have to draw a line in the sand sometimes. I had a PM get me out to look at the same hospital system project 4 times because he wanted "this and not that", or "how much for just this", "what about if we left off this" eventually I said tell us what you know you want for sure and we will get started...then we can discuss other projects. He would rush me to do the estimates and then tell me he needed weeks to discuss it....I probably wasted 10 hours total. In the end he asked me "what about for just windows", I told him to tell me what his budget was and I would tell him yes or no....probably saved myself another 5 hours of wasted time!

I was considering a somewhat similar approach. Donuts of course and fliers that speak of how clean homes sell quicker and for a higher price and offer the realtor a $25 gift card if they contact us to schedule an estimate for their sellers that results in a job of $250 or more. Hopefully they sell the house faster, make more commission and get some free Red Lobster!

What is the biggest challenge to your business right now?
The economy has our customers pinching pennies and shopping around more. Price really matters now more than ever, but we can't always be the cheapest so.....
What can you do or did you do to overcome that challenge?
Bought "sales for dummies" cd and worked to improved lines of communication between myself and my co-workers.
Was your effort successful and why or why not?
Yes...I have learned to explain to my customers how my company adds value which is more important than just having the cheapest price.
If the challenge is beyond your control what are you doing to try to manage your business in spite of it?
Take it one customer at a time instead of looking at it in terms of days, weeks or months.
Where is your business right now compared to where you thought it might be at the beginning of the year?
On track, but just barely. I was pretty ambitious!
Where do you see your business in the next 12 months based upon your specific area?
Continuing to grow as the smaller and poorly managed companies close shop.

I use nothing but the web for my advertising. This year I'll be all in for about $200 for the domains and hosting and I'm on pace for about $100k in sales this year. I'm not that good at math but that's some serious ROI!

So to get rid of the haze with oxcalic acid just spray on and rinse off (dwell time?) or do I need to brush it in? Where could I get phosphoric acid and again...just spray on and rinse off or brush in?
Thanks for the help.

I've also been hearing muriatic acid or even vinegar. Any COmments?

I've run into a few jobs where the sprinkler systems leave what I assume is calcium and/or hard water stains on brick walls and wood fences. I have a hard time getting rid of it. any suggestions??
Thanks in advance.

I'm looking into getting liability insurance for my business. I do mostly residential and it doesn't come up much and I haven't lost any business (that I know of) by not being insured. I definately see the upside of being insured if it is reasonably priced. Now I have a property management company asking for some bids and my insurance so now seems like a great time to get some...although yesterday would have been better! Does anybody have any info or recommendations to share? Thanks in advance.

Mosmatic Surface Cleaner Question???
in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Posted · Report reply
I have the Mosmatic commercial surface cleaner, I believe it is 21". Above the dome part of the swivle housing is exposed where it connects to the hose with an twist coupling. There are 2 small holes below this coupling facing outward. Water shoots out of these holes while the unit is in use??? Any idea what the problem is or how to fix it?
Thanks!
