  1. Stupidity

I haven't seen anyone say "screw 'em, they should all be shot" in reference to all those who are refugees in N.O. I have seen a very similar sentiment about those who are raping, beating, murdering, etc. Shoot 'em. I agree with that. If someone is that much a scumbag to shoot at rescuers, shoot 'em. If someone is enough of a scumbag to rape and murder a young girl in the bathroom in the superdome, shoot 'em (I believe the crowd took care of the problem). Other than that, I don't believe anyone has said, or feels, that we should just shoot everyone in N.O., or leave them there, or whatever. Whether the living conditions are less than human or not is no excuse to go on a rampage against others.
  2. Stupidity

How do you know it's BS? I think that most of us really don't have a good grasp on many of the things that happened out there in the past week. I too heard the stories of inmates being released from jails and essentially let go. Whether that's true, I don't know. It sure doesn't make sense for officials to have done that, but there are a lot of things that have happened that don't seem to make a lot of sense. Maybe you've got some better or more reliable information than the rest of us? I'm not going to assume it's true just because some radio talk show host said so, but I'm not going to assume it isn't just because someone else says it's BS. I agree, it seems that things could have been done better. Whether that's the case remains to be shown. I wasn't there, and neither were you. All we know is what we've heard. Why did it take so long to get people out of the superdome? No idea. Why did it take so long to get supplies in? Again, no idea. Why were there people raping and murdering and beating others in the superdome and elsewhere? Because they could. Put 10,000 or so middle working class families in the superdome for days with no food, water, or power, and I doubt you'd see the same thing. Let a disaster like this strike a place like Pensacola (as it did last year with Ivan), and I doubt you'd have scumbags shooting at those trying to provide assistance. That says a lot about the type of people who were left in N.O. How many rescuers were shot at in Biloxi? Gulfport?
  3. Mobile Homes

So basically, same animal but a stouter breed. :) Do they still have 2" gaps under all the interior doors?
  4. Mobile Homes

Same animal, different name. It's still a trailer.
  5. Gas prices

I'd agree that it would be a great thing for them to do, very nice and generous, but I certainly can't say that they SHOULD give away their products for free. As if they're immoral or unethical for simply wanting to make a profit.
  6. Gas prices

Why is it that we're always all for government interferance in business and our lives when it works to our favor, but when we perceive some injustice done at government's hands, we yell and kick and scream??? Let's hope the government doesn't come in and decide what fair is for your business. Personally, I don't want the government setting my prices, so unless I want to be a hyprocrite, I don't want the government setting the prices of others either.
  7. Gas prices

So what you're saying is that it's ok for the station owner in my example to not only NOT make a profit this week on his gas, but also to have to kick in some money out of his pocket to afford the next tanker of gas? Sorry, that's just not how it works. You're all for free enterprise, within reason, as long as YOU agree with what's reasonable. To the station owner, raising prices because his prices are going up is very reasonable...it allows him to feed his family this week. I agree totally. If someone is taking advantage of a crisis where people are in desperate need just so they can pocket some extra cash, I think that's wrong. I certainly don't concone it, and I'd never do it. On the other hand, I still understand that the business owner has, or should have, the right to charge whatever the hell they want for THEIR product. I just don't think it is the government's job to go around forcing people to do the right thing. This is my point. It is legally wrong because people like you and I feel it is morally wrong. I don't think it is the government's job to enforce morality.
  8. The squrrel speaks the TRUTH

Amen to that. I don't like paying more for gas, or for anything else, but that's the way it is, and sitting around crying about it isn't going to change it. I just thank God I have what I have, and that I can afford to pay t he gas prices, even if I don't like them.
  9. Gas prices

I can't remember much from the 1500s, it's been a long time. The memories are hazy. My ancestors didn't get here until the late 1800s. I agree, though, what was done to those who were here before us wasn't right, but it was done. I don't see what that's got anything to do with what's happening today, other than to give us insight into the terrible things mankind is capable of when there's no one there to stop us. Where's uncle Sam? In what regard? Disaster relief? Gas prices? Price gouging? Just remember, governenment doesn't do anything well...times like this are a testimony to that fact.
  10. Gas prices

How is it not right? As I just explained, if they don't, and prices continue to rise, they'll wind up out of business. You can't keep selling at less than it's going to cost you to replace your stock.
  11. Gas prices

Yes, it is the same gas, but the cost to replace it IS going to cost him more. How much of that increase was just an effort to make more profit, and how much was an effort to keep up with the amount it was going to cost him to refill his tanks, I can't say. Here's an example of why it has to work as it does. Say the guy has a 10,000 gallon tank at his station, and it cost him $2.50/gallon including all taxes, to fill that tank last Tuesday. He prices the gas at $2.75/gallon, meaning it cost him $25,000.00 to fill his tank, and he's going to sell the gas for $27,500.00. Then on Wednesday, he checks prices with his supplier and finds that the next delivery of gas is going to cost him $3.00/gallon because of the effects of the hurricane. That means that if he keeps his prices the same, as you suggest he should, he will not only have to use up the entire $2,500.00 in profit he made from gas for that tank, he's also going to have to take another $2,500.00 out of his own pocket. If prices continue to rise every week, he'd wind up going out of business because he's consistently selling gas for less than it is going to cost him to replace it. As far as someone charging more because there's a need, that should be up to them. If a hotel wants to jack the prices up 2x, 3x, etc, that should be their right. Would I do it? No. But hell, it's their hotel...why should the government be allowed to force a hotel owner to charge a certain rate simply because there's a need? Should the government come into YOUR private property and tell you that you're going to be housing a couple refugee families? I don't think so. If you don't like the fact that some stations are raising prices way above where they need to in order to remain profitable, let them know, don't shop there, etc etc, but stop expecting government to force people to be charitable or decent or sharing or whatever you want to call it. Yes, the gas prices. It costs a lot more to transport that milk from the dairy to the distributor and from the distributor to the grocery store distribution center, and from the grocery store distribution center to the local store. Rising gas prices are going to affect a lot of other things.
  12. Stupidity

I personally don't care about the looting. Yes, it's wrong, but it just isn't something I'm getting upset about...What gets me going is the gangs and the scumbags raping, beating, and killing people who are already dealing with the worst crisis they'll likely ever have to deal with in their life. THOSE are the ones I'd like to see you put a round between their eyes, and NOT a beanbag round. I mean, shooting at rescue personnel??? How freaking low can you get.
  13. Washing a house

Hey,moron...go back and read his post...He says it is for paint prep...Get off your friggin high horse and shut the hell up if that's all you have to say. No idea what the hell you're talking about as far as blowing the horn for ads...No one who responded sells chems or equipment. Those little underlined thingys in their posts aren't ads, they're LINKS to information. Idiot.
  14. Stupidity

For most of these people, the trouble started when the government stepped in and began providing free housing, money, and food for the "poor". It has, over the past 60+ years, created an entitlement class who sees no need to work for what they want. We now have entire families, from the grandparents down to the children, who have never known anything but having what they need and want handed to them. They have no respect for themselves or others, so when the opportunity comes to get more free stuff, they have no problem filling up a shopping cart with shoes or electronics or jewelery or whatever.
  15. New Truck

    1. The Cummins was another $6k, and that was without the leather seats, power seats, towing mirrors, 4x4, etc etc. 2. Diesel costs more per gallon, often as much as $0.20 (or more). 3. They cost more to maintain, and to fix 4. They're louder 5. I don't need the additional pulling power for my trailer. If I were pulling a 30' travel trailer all day, or something similar, I'd have gone with the diesel. For what I do, I just don't need it 6. Sure, I may get more life out of the diesel, but after you factor in the added cost of the engine, the fuel, and the maintenance, am I really ahead all that much?
  16. How many of us ignore injuries?

    LOL, that's what I've heard.
  17. How many of us ignore injuries?

I used to avoid going to the doc for injuries...but since I discovered that they like to prescribe vicodin for any little ache or pain, I go a bit more frequently these days. :lgsick:
  18. New Truck

    Very true.
  19. New Truck

I seriously doubt anyone enjoys spending money on gas. It's more of a neccesity for us full timers. Sorry, didn't realize you were part time. No offense intended. I think most just assumed you were full time, and that's an awfully low gas bill for a full time contractor, especially in an area like yours.
  20. New Truck

$200.00/month? That's a busy week for me. $89.00 to fill up three days ago... Nice truck! Now you just need to get it lettered.
  21. Roof cleaning Pic

Or start earlier in the day, before the roof has a chance to get that hot. The hotter the roof, the heavier you'll need to coat it to prevent it from evaporating before it can work. You can also do as CCPC says and wet it down to cool it off, but then you're walking a wet algae covered roof, which can be pretty dang slippery. I've rescheduled steeper roof jobs simply because it was a wet dewey morning and the roof was very damp...Just not worth the risk of slipping. Even if you don't fall OFF the roof, those shingles can do a real number on your elbows, knuckles, palms, etc if you fall ON the roof. Suffice it to say that polybraided hose is VERY slippery when wet with chlorine. Don't step on the dang thing while on the roof!
  22. Roof cleaning Pic

I was pulling it with a 1988 chevy 2500, but I blew the engine a few weeks back. Now I'm pulling it with a 2005 Dodge 2500 with the 5.7 litre Hemi.
  23. Roof cleaning Pic

Ditto that. I use anywhere between a 3% and 7% sodium hypochlorite solution and get great, virtually immediate results. You may have to re-apply in heavier areas to get rid of the brown/yellowish haze that will be left after the first application. Typically, I use a 5% or so solution. check with your local pool supply/chemical supply/ag supply places to see if you can find a liquid sodium hypochlorite solution between 10 and 15%...it's much cheaper and easier to use than buying bleach in gallon jugs. I don't like the pitch witch because you're using too much pressure on the roof. You should be able to rinse with a garden hose or similar pressure.
  24. Roof cleaning Pic

That's what I have also, and I love it. Plenty of room for what I need (though there 's NEVER enough room for all the stuff I COULD put in there), tows well, not too big...never had a problem getting it turned around, backed down a driveway, or into a residential neighborhood. Anything bigger and I think it'd be too big (for me at least). When it comes time to replace this one, it will be with another 7x14 Haulmark, though this time I'll have the floor and at least part of the walls sprayed with the spray-in bedliner material. I have learned that yes, chlorine DOES eat aluminum!
  25. New House Cleaning?

Ditto what PressurePros said...I don't believe Calcium Hypochlorite is as effective, and it is harder to rinse. Check with your local pool suppliers, chemical suppliers, agriculture suppliers, hardware stores, etc...to see if anyone carries liquied pool shock. You can use bleach, full strength, but it isn't as easy to use simply because of the packaging. How big are you? I'm 275lbs and I don't think twice about getting on most roofs. I don't do barrel tiles, for obvious reasons, but I can do just about any shingle roof a smaller guy can do. Lots of us rinse from the ground, and with the right equipment (a roller pump or similar setup (I belive Mel (PWKid) has a very nice high quality pump setup) you can apply your chlorine from the ground. Many of us use a shurflo pump to apply from the roof and then rinse from the ground. You CAN use this type setup to shoot from the ground, but it is time consuming and wastes a lot of chlorine. I've done it a couple times on roofs that were just too slick or steep to walk, but I don't suggest it for most roofs. Whatever you do, if you're uncomfortable on roofs, take it slow and don't put yourself in a position you're not comfortable with.
