I have a deck that I need to strip and stain. The deck is only about 5 months old and the Thompsons that had been applied twice, by the company who built the deck, is, of course, allready looking like crap. It is not a clear thompsons seal, but instead one with some redish brown pigment. Will I need to use a stripper such as HD-80 to remove this type of Thompsons finish or will a milder cleaner such as EFC-38 do the trick. I want to do a excellent job on this deck because unlike most of the homeowners around here she is willing to pay for good quality. Actually, its kinda funny, I just posted a remark on another thread talking about how nobody in this area is willing to pay for quality wood restoration and about 15 minutes later this lady called. I think I must have angered the wood gods.:whoops: here are a few pictures

If it lasts 3 to 4 years what do you do when it fades? clean and apply a coat over the origianal coat or do you have to strip the old sealer and reapply?

Removing Thompsons
CCPC replied to CCPC's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The problem is I don't want to spend a couple of hundred dollars on chemical that I only need for the occasanial deck job. Meaning, buy one for 70.00 plus shipping, try it, realize its not going to work; buy another, try it, realize its not going to work, so on and so on. Now I've spent more money than the job is paying. I realize that I test spot is the only way to know what will work FOR SURE, but the reason for this post is to gain some input from others on this site which may increase the likelyhood of getting what I need from the get go instead of wasting money on products that I might only use twice a year. -

Tony, So what did you finally do about that deck? Did you find somthing that would remove it? I'm pretty sure that's not whats on this deck, I hope. As far as test spots go, I was hoping to get some input from those of you who with a lot of wood restoration experience to help increase my chances of using the correct method from the get go. I had read on another thread that efc-38 could remove most of the thompsons products so I just wanted to see if anyone could confirm that. Even if it can, it seems the best method, in this case, is to just go ahead and use a Sodium Hydroxide based striper and call it day. Thanks for all of the responces folks. -
Is it safe to run a shurflo pump dry? I want to be able to clear about two hundred feet of chem line after each use, but I am afraid it might damage the pump. this is, of course, after running water through the pump and the line. I contacted Shurflo about this question, but the lady I talked to didn't sould like she knew what she was talking about.

Thanks Ryan, I never thought of that method.

When selling quality doesn't work
CCPC replied to staudend's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
My observations have been (considering my limited exposure to wood restoration) that here in this neck of the woods most people WILL NOT pay the top dollar prices that many on this bbs are quoting on wood restoration in other areas. You can tell them all about your indepth process till your blue in the face, but in the end, most around here are only interested in trying to squeeze out another 5 to 10 years of life on there, usually, PT deck. 8 out of 10 decks in this area are sealed with cheap clear sealers and the most homeowners seem fine with that. Honestly, I think it must be in large part, geographical. I have seen many pictures of the work that a lot of the masters on this bbs post and I never see decks sealed at that level of quality around here. With that said, I would have to agree with Henry on this one, at least under these given circumstances for me in this area. In short, if I want to do any decks around here I have to be willing to comprimise. P.S. Anyone from the Jacksonville area please chime in... I bet we will not here from anyone in this area that disagrees with my observations. -
That was the funniest scene in the whole movie. LOL!!!

When selling quality doesn't work

I think Nick is talking about providing a before and after pic profolio of each customers deck and putting it together after the job a droping it off at there house or mailing it to them. Just a way of showing the customer what a big differece his efforts had made on there deck. -

How much do those go for? -
Dale, I'm not new to this bbs, but if you would'nt mind. After six pages of requests I would feel a little left out if I did'nt ask. lpsr@comcast.net Thanks, Lance

I have a wood job coming up where the customer wants to and will provide the sealer which will be Flood. I do not know much about Flood, so I am seeking any input that anyone wants to offer up on this product. Wether that be from personal experience or hear say.

We have two more on the way the closest is due to hit Cuba in a couple of days. Of course who knows what it will really do. Like Jon Chapman said, Charley was supposed to hit Tampa, go through the vacinity of Gainsville(oneness's area) and exit the eastside of Florida right through the Jacksonville area where I am. I guess you could say that we all dodged a bullet on this one.

Northern Tool has the best prices. I bought a 3 gpm shurflo from them for 49.00 plus shipping. I actually ordered the 1.8 gpm, but they made a mistake and sent me the 3 gpm instead. What are you planing to use the surflo for? Giving advice on how to set it up really depends on what you plan to use it for.

We are starting to catch a little of it now, but it is nothing compared to some of the storms we had over the past month or so. My prayers are for those in Fort Myers and the others that were greatly affected over on the Gulf Side.

After reading this thread, I think if I come in contact with somthing that can only be cleaned with HF then I guess its not going to get cleaned, by me at least.

What kind of spray are you using? they do sell a spray called hornet and wasp (I think) that you spray on the nest and when the stuff hits them it leaves them flightless as well as dead in seconds.
-
I have never encountered a bee problem before, but I do encounter wasps on a daily basis. They don't take to kindly to me blasting there nests off the sides of houses. I actually kind of enjoy wasps. There good for target practice. Whenever the're flying around me I try to get the tip of my lance right up next to them and whamo! I press the trigger and they drop like flies. As a matter of fact, I just had some good target practice at a house this morning.

House with brick. the brick area underneath two of the potted pants on the front steps have really bad white stains. Not sure what this is- need to remove it - any ideas on what this may be and any sugestions on what to use to remove it would be great.
