  1. The problem is I don't want to spend a couple of hundred dollars on chemical that I only need for the occasanial deck job. Meaning, buy one for 70.00 plus shipping, try it, realize its not going to work; buy another, try it, realize its not going to work, so on and so on. Now I've spent more money than the job is paying.

I realize that I test spot is the only way to know what will work FOR SURE, but the reason for this post is to gain some input from others on this site which may increase the likelyhood of getting what I need from the get go instead of wasting money on products that I might only use twice a year.

  2. Tony,

So what did you finally do about that deck? Did you find somthing that would remove it?

I'm pretty sure that's not whats on this deck, I hope. As far as test spots go, I was hoping to get some input from those of you who with a lot of wood restoration experience to help increase my chances of using the correct method from the get go. I had read on another thread that efc-38 could remove most of the thompsons products so I just wanted to see if anyone could confirm that. Even if it can, it seems the best method, in this case, is to just go ahead and use a Sodium Hydroxide based striper and call it day.

Thanks for all of the responces folks.

  3. Is it safe to run a shurflo pump dry? I want to be able to clear about two hundred feet of chem line after each use, but I am afraid it might damage the pump. this is, of course, after running water through the pump and the line. I contacted Shurflo about this question, but the lady I talked to didn't sould like she knew what she was talking about.

  4. I have a deck that I need to strip and stain. The deck is only about 5 months old and the Thompsons that had been applied twice, by the company who built the deck, is, of course, allready looking like crap. It is not a clear thompsons seal, but instead one with some redish brown pigment.

Will I need to use a stripper such as HD-80 to remove this type of Thompsons finish or will a milder cleaner such as EFC-38 do the trick.

I want to do a excellent job on this deck because unlike most of the homeowners around here she is willing to pay for good quality. Actually, its kinda funny, I just posted a remark on another thread talking about how nobody in this area is willing to pay for quality wood restoration and about 15 minutes later this lady called. I think I must have angered the wood gods.:whoops:

    here are a few pictures

  5. My observations have been (considering my limited exposure to wood restoration) that here in this neck of the woods most people WILL NOT pay the top dollar prices that many on this bbs are quoting on wood restoration in other areas. You can tell them all about your indepth process till your blue in the face, but in the end, most around here are only interested in trying to squeeze out another 5 to 10 years of life on there, usually, PT deck. 8 out of 10 decks in this area are sealed with cheap clear sealers and the most homeowners seem fine with that.

Honestly, I think it must be in large part, geographical. I have seen many pictures of the work that a lot of the masters on this bbs post and I never see decks sealed at that level of quality around here.

With that said, I would have to agree with Henry on this one, at least under these given circumstances for me in this area. In short, if I want to do any decks around here I have to be willing to comprimise.

P.S. Anyone from the Jacksonville area please chime in... I bet we will not here from anyone in this area that disagrees with my observations.

  6. We have two more on the way the closest is due to hit Cuba in a couple of days. Of course who knows what it will really do. Like Jon Chapman said, Charley was supposed to hit Tampa, go through the vacinity of Gainsville(oneness's area) and exit the eastside of Florida right through the Jacksonville area where I am. I guess you could say that we all dodged a bullet on this one.

  7. I have never encountered a bee problem before, but I do encounter wasps on a daily basis. They don't take to kindly to me blasting there nests off the sides of houses. I actually kind of enjoy wasps. There good for target practice. Whenever the're flying around me I try to get the tip of my lance right up next to them and whamo! I press the trigger and they drop like flies. As a matter of fact, I just had some good target practice at a house this morning.

  8. Alan,

Thanks for the info. Although I sure it is not a wax finish its more like a shinny lacquer finish. It is coming up pretty bad in certain areas and with good reason. The guy who owned the house before did it him self and when you look at the floor closely you can see dirt and mildew underneath the finish. Terrible job he did. I think he just wanted to make it look good long enough to sell it.

Thanks to everyone who have replied with help so far.

  9. James,

The planters are made of plastic, but I think whatever has caused the white discoloration is from the drain holes on the bottom of the planters. As far as fertelizer, I am not sure what they use or how often.

    Seymore - Ryan,

Thinks for the recommendations I will look into that.

    Paul UK,

My guess is that it might be efforessence as well. What is the best and safest way to treat that disease? I will be returning there on Wed. so ordering chems will not probably not be an option. I will have to find somthing local.
