  1. Here's a trick, if you use a ball valve on the end of your pressure hose...turn the valve most of the way off, but enough so that you're getting flow without constantly cycling the unloader...You'll create enough back pressure to keep the downstreamer from drawing, and you'll be able to use a low pressure tip to rinse with.

Nice. Never thought of that. I'll have to try.

  2. I tried to downstream but spent so much time putting chem on and not to mention it drives me crazy waiting for them chem to travel 200 feet then when you stop drawing you need to wait for the clear water. I love the M5 X jet and don't mind carrying a bucket. I use a 5 gallon bucket with a snap on lid. Put a hole in the middle of the lid and put a zip tie around the hose before the lid inside and on the outside so the hose dosn't slide at all. just enough hose in the bucket to reach bottome and I just carry the bucket and put it in front of me and it takes just a minute or so to drench a building side in chem. Brush the gutters while I wait. Then rinse from below the gutters down and then rinse one more time starting with the gutters and down.

If you like downstreaming thats great. But what I look at is I have not seen one person say they were not happy with a x-jet. if only they were cheaper.

I don't like the X-jet. I see no advantages to a properly set up downstream system, only disadvantages. I save on average 25% more time on each job since I started downstreaming again about a year ago.

  3. Lance

I know how you gotta feel after something like this, I hate losing customers. It sounds like you had a good relationship with the customer too, which is what we are all told to do to in order to stand out. I'm sure she will see she gets what she paid for and may even call you back. It would be real hard for me to jump right when she calls. I would have to mess with her a little and tell her I'm booked solid for a month. Did you ever e mail her back? Hang in there and keep doing what you know is right.

Congrats on spanking my Colts too, good game.

Hey Barry, Actually this wasn't a previous customer. I had just met her and given an estimate about a week prior. The one thing that really surprised me about this lady was how upfront and honest she was. Most customers would just call and cancel, but she actually gave a thorough explanation on my voice mail of why she was canceling (same content as her email above) which is what prompted my email to her. I mean it's not a big deal, I've had plenty of this in the past, but I figured I'd share because I still had the email.

    Oh, and GO JAGS!!!!!!!!!!

  4. "You make that much for squirting water" LOL

That's the exact problem Jeff, that's all that most people thank we do, and for good reason, because that's all that most pressure washers do do. Most have no concept in what goes into this trade. I know this has been beat to death, but with that quote I couldn't resist.

  5. This is a little example of what you get in a industry loaded with inexperienced idiots cutting the throat of legit businesses. I gave a quote to this lady about a month ago. She called me back the night before our appointment and canceled. I wrote her an email in response to her cancellation and this was the reply. She was very nice, but naive like many.

Lance thank you for your email. I am very sorry that I had to cancel our appointment but I also wanted to be honest with you. For years I paid $250.00 to have my house, driveway, patio & sidewalks pressure washed. When you quoted me $500.00 for the house & driveway I thought that was a little high but since I had not done pressure washing in 3 years I really just thought like everything else the price had gone up. I did not not go looking for another estimate but this gentleman was in our neighborhood and just came by so I allowed him to give me an estimate and I was really shocked in what he quoted me. I have never been a shopper for the lowest price because I do know you pay for what you get but his estimate was so much lower than yours that I had to make that decision. It will be interesting to see the kind of quality work that he does and I will let you know. I will keep you in mind for future jobs, and I trust you do understand. I wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful holiday season.

    Thank you

  6. I'm tired of this line of work for those reasons, and then some. These days, I price as high as I can get, I only take the gravy work, and I will not work for people I don't like. Now, I find myself working a lot less, with less headaches, and making the same money I was before. This industry will never get due respect, mark my words on that.

  7. Trademarks are different than copywrite. trademarks need to be filed. its not cheap but worth it so no copy cats try to use your marketing.

That's not exactly true. Once a person creates a name for company and or logo, and begins to use it in commerce, they have a certain level of trademark protection. Not only that, but one may also use the "TM" mark next to there logo once they start using a specific name in commerce. Which is significant in showing others that the name and/or logo are protected and may only be used by the owner too describe there specific products or services. To receive the "R" symbol signifying a registered trademark can only be used after a trademark has been submitted and accepted by the trademark office, which can take as much as several years.

I guess the point I'm making is its not completely necessary to register for a trademark to use the "TM" symbol next to a name, or to have protection from others who steel, or use a name that's very similar to yours. It usually will all come down to who can prove that they were using the name first.

  8. The pressure washer will get you by for a starter, but you're gonna want more gpm as soon as you can swing it.

No need for a water broom, just use an 8010 or 9510 tip for rinsing concrete. Its faster, easier, and cheaper.

Spend the extra money and buy a good surface cleaner, it will pay for itself in just a few jobs. I bought a whisper wash classic a couple of months ago and have loved it, but there's other good brands as well.

I would say its not a bad idea to have an M5 x-jet for certain jobs, but I think you really ought to consider downstreaming for your regular house washing. Do a search, you'll find a lot of information on it.

If you plan to keep your washer on the trailer/truck, you'll want at least 200' of hose, and a hose reel to accommodate it. I recommend cox reels. good quality.

No pitch witch. I'm sure it has a use?, but not necessary for cleaning roofs. do a search on roof cleaning, its a specialty which to do it right, and be competitive, it will require investing in some different equipment.

  9. Hey Lance...my wife's best friend is an atheist....well, actually agnostic, I converted him :D

I think people can discuss religious issues and stay civil...even if they can't, so what. Jesus was spat upon, all of the disiples were either stoned, or hung, or beheaded...and killed. If I can't take a couple of insults from another keyboard jockey, then my faith is not very deep. A christian should be willing to die for his/her faith, yet most of us get all bent out of shape over some words....

Anyway Lance, I'll post some more for you a little later on, I gotta run right now....

Good reply Anthony. You show a lot of calm-confidence in what you believe in, which is a great thing. One thing that's always bothered me is when people display somewhat of a belligerent anger when someones beliefs are different from their own (that's how wars are started), and that statement is in no way directed toward anyone on here.

I've actually had people come to my door to voice their faith, and then have the nerve to get mad at me because I don't think the same way they do. I hate that.

  10. This is exactly why religious debates really ought to be avoided in an online forum such as this. I find what you're saying to be offensive, since you're basically saying that my entire experience with God (which is fairly extensive and quite interactive) has been nothing but a delusion of my mind. I can assure you that it is not, for very valid reasons I'll not go into here.

That's all I'll say on the issue, since I do NOT want this thread to get ugly as I believe it did in the past. Religion and politice (and the proper roof cleaning chemical) are the WORST topics for discussion in the relatively anonomous online world. They are topics some people feel VERY VERY passionate, regardless of which "side" you are on. That passion often translates into hurt or offended feelings, and much too often, an offensive or very personal response. It's too easy to say things at a keyboard that you would NEVER say to a person's face.

No offense Mike, just stating a few of my own beliefs and view points. So basically what you're saying here is, its OK to speak your mind as long as it fits the belief system of everyone else? Non-majority view points need not reply? Gotcha. just wanted to be clear about that.

In any case, I'm a firm believer in evolution. A few have stated how can it be an accident that the world and environment is so well suited for use humans and other animals. Well.... that answer is simple, after millions of years of changing and evolving, our ultimate goal, as living organisms, is to adapt to our surroundings as best as possible. After all that is what evolution is to began with. The fact that we do perceive the world to be such a suitable place for use is only proof that evolution is working. As the earths conditions change slightly here in there over vast lengths of time, we will change along with it (that is, if our species doesn't end up getting left behind).
