  1. Quick question.

I got my downstreamer in from pressurtek and will be installing next to my hose reel as advised. I do however have 2 other downstreamers plumbed in before my discharge quick connect that were there from the factory. I am thinking these should be removed to help with the draw. Me thinks that they would draw air perhaps and lessen the draw. Any suggestion. Thank.s

Another thing to consider is to not permanently install the injector in line. I know some have theirs like that, but I think it restricts the flow while trying to clean concrete, or anything else for that matter. I only hook mine up while I'm using it, but once I'm finished say, cleaning a house or something, I always disconnect it.

  2. Things are going good here for me. My sales are just about the same as they were last year, but why are things good you ask? Because I've only advertised 2 times this year, where as last year I had to constantly plug away mailers and what not to keep the ship sailing.

I'm finally starting see the fruits of past years labors. Repeat customers, many referral calls, and HOA board members that exclusively route inquires about a reputable roof cleaning/pressure washing company to me.

My net is better because of the huge decrease in adver.$, but I haven't been much of a go getter this year. If I adver. like a did last year, this year, I would be way ahead of last years gross, but I guess I'm just not as motivated as Jeff, or others.

  3. Congrats on a good season so far Jarrod. My numbers are nowhere near yours, to be honest I'm getting a little down lately. It's still been a lot of hit and miss for my first full time season and if I wasn't doing some remodeling for a good friend on the side, I would be starving to death. I've learned that I can't just sit and wait on the phone to ring. I can only send out 1000 or so postcards at a time and I just haven't seen the return on them that others do. So I have to go out and find work and I'm not very good at it, it's a lot harder than I ever imagined. It really annoys me that when work is scarce I get a little depressed instead of motivated. The work I have done has been mostly housewashes, a few drives, and some commercial roofs, and no bites on wood resto yet.

Hang in there Barry. There was someone on here that said it perfectly some time ago, and boy was it ever accurate. Something like:

"The first year you take one step foward, and two steps back, the second year you take two steps foward and one step back, and by the third year, things are rollin'. "

  4. I do the same thing! Unless the gutters are streaked very noticeably, or as you said, the customer insists (only one ever has) I don't mess with it. It isn't a case of not wanting to do a great job, but rather the fact that the gutter cleaners DO remove a thin layer of paint in order to get the streaks off...meaning the more it is cleaned, the more likely it is the bare metal will come through. I don't use gutter cleaner at all on fascia wrap anymore...had a few times where even with a weak mix and no brushing, the paint washed off and exposed bare metal. I can fix it if it is white, but other colors are near impossible to match. I just explain, if they ask, that I have a cleaner that will remove the streaks, but that it is possible it will also take the paint off. Just not worth the liability and hassle if they don't ask. Never had a complaint yet!

I HATE removing streaks from facia and flashing, and your right about the paint being a bit fragile on the facia. Not only is it twice as difficult to remove than streaks on gutters, but it sometimes seems then only way to remove it is by taking all the paint off with it!

  5. I used to brush the gutters even with the faintest amount of streakage, but lately decided that's a waste of time. So now I only use gutter cleaner if the streaks are really an eye sore, or if the customer insists on it.

I've really started analizing what things are costing the most time on a job, and to my suprise a lot of it is the little things that no one is going to notice anyways. I'm still always going to insist on a high level of workmanship, and even cutting out some of the little things, I'm still light years ahead of my competition.

  6. Plumb a Sharyl to the inlet side of the injector you can get 5-1. It kills the injector in about a month, but injectors are cheap.

I tried that as well, but I experimented with what I had on hand. I used a 1.8gpm shurflo and a rated 3-5gpm injector (maybe not the most ideal match).

It seemed to really give my shurflo a hard time (very vigorous cycling on and off), but it did increase the draw a bit. It just didn't seem practical enough for everyday use.

  7. Hey, you're the metal and fabrication guy around here! Design us a downstream injector that will get draw rates similar to the Xjet but that can be used at the hose reel! I'd pay considerably more than the Xjet costs for such a thing! Xjet draw rates with downstreamer convenience! Wow!

I don't think it's possible, because if it was, someone would already be selling it.LOL!!

I've tried just about every method I could think of to increase draw rates with downstreamers, putting multiple injectors in line, running multiple injectors in parallel, and nothing seems to work. I'm still working on a few ideas, but I have to keep those under wraps until I get it figured out. Don't want to ruin any potential paten opportunities.

  8. Ditto on the ash gray T-shirts. I also where the ones that are a little bit darker caller athletic heather, which doesn't seem to show bleach stains either. My problem is them getting eaten up by the chlorine. I can buy a dozen shirts and within 6 months they've all got holes in them.

I just ordered some 50/50 t-shirts, half cotton, half poly, so I'll see how those work out.

As for pants, I used to use blue jeans exclusively, but I was going through way to many (12-15 pair a year), so I recently bought some Dickies with cargo pockets (which I love, great place to carry tips), and they have held up exceptionally well. No holes, very faint bleach discoloration, but barely noticeable. I'm sold on the Dickies, just in the past month or so I've been wearing them I figure I've probably saved $20 or so, in what I would have paid for more blue jeans.

  9. How does the downstream injector do with long hoses. I found that with 2-300 feet of hose it would not activate the normal injectors. I had heard about some of them working with that length of hose but have not tried one.

    Thanks,

    Anthony

I've used up to 250' with my injector with no problems. I'm not sure if I could draw successfully with 300' because I've never tried. The key is to use an injector that's one size smaller than recommended for your machine, this tends to increase ratio of chem to water, as well as allow one to draw using more HP hose without back pressure problems.

  10. Lance....yeah, see I agree with you. I would much rather be on the outskirts of the chaos, not right in the middle of it.

It does make for a good situation. If I drive about 1 mile N. I'm in the Jax city limits, if I drive another 10 minutes, I'm in the middle of downtown, yet where I live, there's very little crime, the schools are SOOO much better, and I can leave my car doors unlocked all the time without much worry (but no one get any crazy ideas because I'm going to start locking em now, LOL!).

  11. I live in small town bordering on a big city. I like this because I'm not right in the mess, but I can get there pretty fast when I need too. Actually, it kinda depends on what city one would consider moving too. Jacksonville isn't anywhere near one of the biggest cities when it comes to buildings, people, and commerce, but it's the largest city in the U.S. in land mass. This makes it nice because even though you have to travel a bit further from job to job, everybody's got plenty of space, so were not all climbing all over each other while trying to get around.

  12. Anthony - I moved from New York (pop. 999 billion) to Harrisburg, NC (pop. 5200) 12 years ago. I've got 2 small children...wouldn't change it for the world! I love small town living.

Wow!! That's a lot of NY'ers considering the world population is under 10 billion. LOL!!

  13. Say good night to that crack head. Of course they'll just be another one to take his place, but all the same, it put a smile on my face. Lets not forget how among other things, this sick ******* personally beheaded some of our own, on video no less. see ya!! feed the earth worms @#%$#@%!!!!

  14. Good post Dave. Hopefully people will get the message. I swear, if I do one more estimate and here from the homeowner how the last guy blew the seals on the windows, or killed a bunch of plants, I'm gonna scream!! For god sakes people, learn what your doing before selling your services!!!!! All right, I feel better.

  15. Instead of a sure flow pump part, could you use a adjustable solenoid like those used to open and close doors on rods? Those also have a remote control available.

Maybe you could. The way I did it was just because it was the cheapest way while using a lot of parts already on hand. In reality, controlling a valve with a motor is not anywhere near the best way to do it. The best way would be to buy a chemical resistant solenoid valve like charles has and find a transmitter and receiver kit that would be compatible with it, but whichever way you go, your probably going to want it 12v.

  16. I thought you said you solved that draw issue with that set up you spoke of. Im dead certain that there is a solution to this chemical draw, never say never. There has to be a way, anyway please call me at 434-1108 I have a few questions for you. By the way one solution I was offer was by The Pressure Washing Store - Dave said to change to 1/2 inch pressure hose, ever heared that one????

Charles, I think you may have misunderstood what my valve is for. It's for controling a ball valve that stops the flow of my chem draw hose for my injector. I'm not having any chem draw issues, I only keep 200' on the reel becuase 9 times out of 10, it gives me plenty of length. In the rare occasions that I need more hose length, I carry back up hose (usually only 50-100').

Just curious why you need that much hose on the reel anyways? Can't you just keep 250' on the reel and hold another hundered as back up? Anyway, I believe Dave is on the right track. The 1/2" hose will allow for less back pressure on the injector which could allow you to downstream with 350', but I've heard from others that using 1/2" hose can be quite a pain in a** because of the extra weight and what not.

Did you try going with a smaller injector yet? This will allow you draw a stronger chem solution, as well as allow you to draw with more hose. I think you might want to try that first. Go with an injector that's one size to small for your machines rated GPM. I use a rated 3-5 gpm injector with my 5.6 gpm machine and I get great draw with 250-300 feet (just be sure to disconnect it anytime your not downstreaming).

Give me a call over the weekend, I'll talk your ear off LOL!!
