You get what you pay for...
John Doherty replied to sweetwaterfish's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Prep for sale washes are tough to gauge. If the ho calls we usually do alright. If a realtor calls it ends up being a pain. Luckily I've only had a few realtor calls this year, one booked the job and then cancelled day before it was scheduled. Another booked a job and I'm still waiting for payment from the seller, 3 weeks now. -

Dan your tank set up reminds me of those Atomic bomb test towers. -
Mike, as a veteran of these forums, is telling it like it is, most of us won't share pricing info. If my prospects are shopping for price, I'm targeting the wrong demographic.

I'm going to do some painting! My painting experience is minimal, used to do the Boys and Girls Club's every year and we would also paint apartments used for temporary housing for homeless families. This is for a good friend and for no pay but I want to do a top quality job. It's a home interior that's about 15 years old and nothing has ever been painted. The usual dings and gouges and staining of a house with a single parent and 3 kids. I'm mostly interested in the prep work, do I clean the walls, use a primer, etc. The existing paint is kind of a cream color and will be covered with the same or darker color. Any pointers appreciated.

I hope everyone has some time to sit and reflect on all the things they are thankful for. Not just with the bird and the family and all the crazyness that goes with the holiday. I mean the people around you and the things you can do and have, and the reasons why you have them all in your life. God Bless everybody and have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

John Doherty replied to chris francis's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Why would you think that, it's not MY backyard you can work anywhere you want. I come here to learn and share what I've learned, you've done very very well in 2 years I'm sure I could learn a lot from you. I'd like to come down and buy you lunch and pick your brain a little, Friday is good for me this week or anytime next week. When is good for you? -

Trying To Sell My Rig
John Doherty replied to Benchmark Power Washing's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Try Craigslist, ebay and the other p/w boards, post lots of pictures too. This is unfortunately a tough time of year to sell and get a good price. These machines depreciate tremendously as soon as they leave the dealer lot. It's a real long shot but talk to the dealer, maybe they can sell it for you on consignment. Good luck. -

Have you survived the great Recession?
John Doherty replied to plainpainter's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Record year for us. Learned a lot. Put down the wand with what I thought was a good system in place, that only lasted until August. I'll have the winter to think it through and improve on it. -
So basically every post you make is spam for simix, is that correct?

Do Universities get their buildings cleaned?
John Doherty replied to Little Buddy's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Didn't Ron say the highest rate of guys busted for EPA violations are for work at or close to Universities. Maybe he'll chime in on that. -
How do you get referrals?
John Doherty replied to Little Buddy's question in Residential Pressure Washing
It's nice to give something but not necessary, I don't unless it's a huge account. I can't think of anyone who doesn't like to refer people to a company they've had a positive experience with. There is one big aspect that most overlook, a lot of us assume our customers remember us, name co name etc. It's really important to get your name in front of your old customers a couple times a year, newsletter, announce seasonal service offerings, etc. Make sure they remember who to refer! -
If you want to sell high end and high quality (ie:high price) you will be better served by meeting them in person and not mentioning price in the call at all. When starting out it's better to not try to prescreen, you will learn more about selling and your customer base by meeting with everyone. You'll end up with some who will waste your time and want a $99 wash but you'll also learn from these types too.

Yes we use chemicals and equipment and we do it on and off the roof. Go to the roof cleaning section and start reading and so on.

Help with pricing
John Doherty replied to Visionzlandscapes's question in Residential Pressure Washing
More and more people I want to help less and less. -
William for some reason my public service spirit only comes out when I see a pressure washing sign. Actually it seems to be just one co that does it and they put them everywhere, it's a disgrace. The other co's that I've seen have been on customers property and I would NEVER touch them, those are legitimate as far as I'm concerned.
-
Back to the topic. If the sign is on a public right of way, not a customers property, here in NJ it is illegal. When I remove signs from a public right of way I am doing a community service, and I will continue to do so. If one of the guys is with me at a red light and a sign is right next to us I want that sign in my trash bin in the back of the truck in a safe and quick manner. Keep America beautiful people!
