Ipe' stain shoot out
Chappy replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Speaking of bleach and water. Downstreamed bleach on this and it took the remaining stain completely off. -
Ipe' stain shoot out
Chappy replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Here is a dock I did 11/07. Wood tux tinted to Mahagony. On lake with heavy shade on the boardwalk and full sun on dock. it had weathered 5 years before being stained by me. the stain held up nicely on spindles, and still had some color on horizontals. Some surface mildew on the most shady part. first pic is how it looked after finishing 16months ago. I think the WT held up pretty well. If I had checked it at 1 year I bet It would have looked much better and I would have waited several months to restain anyway. -
Youve never seen jeff. Its like seeing lyle Lovitt and Julia Roberts. (me being the beautifull one of course!) Every time my wife sees Julia Roberts, she says "That poor horse faced woman" so I guess that makes Lyle the beautiful one.

and I love you Jeff!

"May 11th, 09, 11:22 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I washed the deck today Rick with some of that Arm & Hammer clothes washing detergent with Oxi-Clean - will post pics of it tomorrow after it's first washing of the year. I'm only mildly convinced that TWP-200 has some potential - but it isn't recommended for horizontal surfaces. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel Tambasco" Sorry Daniel, Couldnt resist after reading through the "Why im switching to AC" thread. Anyway, Greg. There is such a small amount of ammonia in any dish washing detergent that you dont have to worry about it. You dont want to clean you kitchen floor with bleach then pour ammonia on top to see if it will work any better, like I did once. Another thing to file under the "stupid things Ive done" folder.

back on track!
Chappy replied to jeffex11's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
my phone just hasnt been ringing this year, and when it does people are definately shopping price. With the exception of decks, until just this month. Usually a call on a deck that came from my website, 70% or so, I can sell on skill, longevity, etc., and most dont even get competetive bids. This month though Ive lost two, one was for 1/3 of my price and the other was $500 less than mine, and I had already cut my rate by about $500 on a massive deck and dock combo. On The 1st one, the contractor is a total hack, you get what you pay for!- the second got a painter reffered by the paint store who I believe is brand new. So my excellent sales skills are not so excellent any more. But Ive got to find a way to get the phone ringing again. -
I only do night work periodically, and on certain jobs its actually quite pleasant. But man it really throws me for the next day or two. Puts my whole sytem out of whack.

Deck sealing in Clearwater, Fl
Chappy posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
This deck in Clearwater is 10 years old and had failing Defy. (it hadnt been restained since the initial time.) Under the roof it was still in fine shape and needed some extra HD80 to remove it. Up until last year it was completely covered by a large tree, so the Defy had continued to offer some protection. I used Wood Tux and tinted to Amaretto. ( Im not familiar with Defy so I wouldnt re-coat with it, But I may look into it as it held up pretty well from the initial Home owner application.) You rarely see adeck like this in florida. It was built by Dean Collins at Collins Construction. Very few contractors will take the time to do a nice one like this so I need to give him Props. -
Solid Stain Strip
Chappy replied to Gutter Squad's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I have never used a semi solid. But I agree with the above sentiments. You wont get the solid from the cracks and checks. I dont know how a semi solid would cover. But heres an example of wood that had a solid over an acrylic. Severe splintering and cracking, and no way to get even half of the old stuff off. Applied Cabots problem solver then Cabots solid Alkyd. I didnt like his choice of color but it came out as smooth as humanly possible. I still wouldnt walk on it barefoot though. -
Deckster users
Chappy replied to Adrian's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I use Shane's Bucketster system. Easy to carry. Take top off and put it over bucket of Stain/stripper/etc. The delevan holds up to caustics, acids and stains (Wood Tux Primarily.) the only problem is the bucket is too small for a Marine battery, so I use a motercycle battery. Just have to make sure I charge it every time. -
Who does house washes ....
Chappy replied to David O'Connell Jr.'s question in Residential Pressure Washing
I dont like having to either have seperate tanks for the different mixes, or re-jiggering the mix each time. As much as I hate dragging hoses around, I like the flexibility I get with the pressure washer. Plus, mud daubers, wasp nests and bug stuff on the soffits and high corners just wont respond to just high flow rinses. they need some pressure. -

Downstreaming Decks?
Chappy replied to 814jeffw's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
how do you avoid the cloud when applying stain with the titan. I have a 440 and no matter how far down I have the dial, or what tip, I still get the deadly mist. -

EFC-38 for cleaning
Chappy replied to Tonyg's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Whenever Im doing a dock, i use floating oilsorbant booms. They arent goint to soak up old stain or the bleach but do a fine job controlling the oil. I still havnt figured out how to get a tarp under a dock to catch everything. -
Awning Cleaning, Orlando, Florida. Using Mallard System
Chappy replied to AC Lockyer's question in Residential Pressure Washing
that was a pretty snippy response. What makes him any different than Chris with his 'patented' apple sauce? Mallard has a long history in this area and a good reputation. I still get calls for roof cleaning and the customer says "Mallard isnt in this area anymore. can you do the same thing?" Who cares if its bleach and soap or pond water and alligator crap. Terra cleans pics are good before and afters. and he should get kudos.- 47 replies

Here are the rest of the pics of the Bahamas IPE. Cabots SPF 2 coats over 5 years. stripped with cabots problem solver and HD 80. (Forgot to take my booster so Im really glad he had the problem solver stripper there.) It was a bear to strip. 5 straight days with the pressure washer. the crap would come up in huge sheets while some of it would roll up and work its way in between boards. 1.5 days just trying to get as much from between the boards as possible.

this is where i spent last week doing a nightmare acrylic strip on IPE. Pictures to follow tomorrow on the IPE

week in hell
Chappy replied to Chappy's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
If you knew how bored I was the first time, I dread going the second. You guys have to remember I already live in the same climate, just a little farther from the beach. Anyway, the question now is how to repair it. Should I re strip, then sand the whole thing again? james, What kind of floor machine? -
Dang it, I had already ordered the thigh master! Now what am I gonna get. maybe this instead.
