Ipe Deck Cleaning and Staining
PressurePros replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thank you for the positive comments guys. Randy.. I haven't been that far down the island for a bit. Is it real bad there? (besides being the activity hotbed) -

Roger, double check that link. i get a timeout error. Sight unseen I would venture that my only concern would be maintenance cost. Can you get parts for the pump, motor, unloader locally? Can you perform repairs or is there a shop nearby? -
Russell Cissell also has some very interesting enzyme products. Bug-Juice Brand "Earth-Friendly" Cleaning Solutions

IPE Dock
PressurePros replied to Chappy's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Looks like any other cheap wood when it gets that bad. Ipe is another product that people have illusions of being "maintenance free". Whats your plan with it? -
BUSY ! 7 estimates for Friday so far and phone is ringing. please God, let it stay warm through December. My September was flat (no growth, no loss). October is going to be up about 70%. I'm booked straight through.

Depending upon what you use to clean and to seal them there is a chance of harming the vines especially if they are not mature. Use a sodium percarbonate based cleaner and go light on the second (acidic) stage of cleaning. For the sealing process, I usually would never recommend a water born product but in this case my concern would be the VOC's in an oil based stain harming the growth. I think the key to success is going to be to manually apply your stain product via brush using as much caution as you can.

judge, welcome to the forum. You mentioned SealMaxx in your title so I will address that first. SealMaxx is a permanent solution. While that may seem appealing there are issues with which you should be aware. Sealmaxx is basically a petrification process. It will not provide UV protection. This means sunlight will cause visible aging (graying). Once this happens, you are stuck with the gray. Sealmaxx, as far as I am aware, cannot be released from the wood. Recourse if you are not happy with the grayed, aged appearance would be to rebuild. concerns me as it should anyone researching these types of products. You can certainly tackle this type of project yourself. Again, an "open eyes" stance is advised. Cleaning and staining wood, especially pergolas, is labor intensive. If you use a high quality, oil based, semi transparent and penetrating stain/sealer you will get the most bang for your buck. Maintenance will be simple cleaning and recoat every 3-4 years on vertical surfaces. An important process for the finish longevity is in the preparation of the wood. Most wood professionals use a two-step process. The first step removes mold spores and contaminants from the wood. The second step places the wood into proper pH balance as well as neutralizes extractive bleeding. In doing a proper wood prep you set yourself up for easy and sustainable long term maintenance. Hope this helps to get you started. Feel free to ask more detailed questions or visit the contractor directory on this forum to find a qualified pro in your area to perform the work for you.

Dave, welcome to the board. Don't sweat the ribbing, its a new guy thing. Many of us have spent a ton of hours developing housewash technique, refining it via information from other contractors and field testing, and then debated the topic until we were blue in the face. That goes for any topic matter in our business. So, when someone comes on and wants to just jump right into asking questions it seems a little left field. I do understand the feeling of wanting answers right away. Who feels like (or has time to) sort through hundreds of posts to find a few hidden gems of information? Its part of the process and a neccesary one. Specific questions after you research will be met by Barry, Alan and everyone else on here with much warmer reception. (as long as that queston isn't about price LOL) Again, man, welcome aboard.

after sealing questions
PressurePros replied to hoosierwindowtek's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Its the nature of the beast with a non curing parafinnic oil. Like it or not it will happen every time it rains to some degree. It will slow down and eventually stabilize but I found at that point, the deck is also markedly faded. I'm a Ready Seal retard though. I stopped using it a few years back when a customer almost had me pay for new carpets in their house. I never did figure out the magic formula to master this "goof proof" stain. Big Rick, where ya been? How did our buddy like his deck? -

You also should have synergistic chemicals (sodium metasilcate and tri sodium phosphate are a couple) that are synergstic with sodium hypochlorite and allow you to lower the amount of "bleach" you have to use. Plus the caustics break the bond of jet fuel and carbon making cleaning up high a bit easier.

Non-stop talker, what a rocker Blue-eyed murder in a size five dress If John is a true VH fan he'll know what song that is from. I'll bet Thad knows. -
I'm just teasing, Steve though I'm sure I almost pushed it to that a few years back. I was the first one to oppose the glorious tool called an X-Jet and that didn't go over well. Things escalated and I insulted Mike W. It was ugly. I think after Delco, TCN was one of the first boards I found. I was a lowly greaser then.

Woodies - measuring question
PressurePros posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Based solely upon this information, what do you come up with for a square footage? "I am building a 500+ sq. ft. ipe deck with a 12' by 16' redwood pergola in a sunny area north of San Francisco. The pergola is three-tiered with 4x6 posts, 2x8 beams, 2x6 joists and 2x3 rafters." I'm having trouble with this one. -

Exactly. I am assuming the pergola is also not built so no pics. I requested a drawing but doubt one is available in a digital format. (PS: I'll give you a ring tonight.. in the middle of twenty things right now) -
Look, if a person thinks trading away $25,000 (which is hard to save up for most) for a vehicle that will depreciate 50% in three years is good business, there is nothing I can do to change that person's mind.
