  1. Do you think this roof needs cleaning?

Those are newer shingles and you probably have another 5 years or there abouts on them before they start showing signs of streaking. I am willing to bet they are algae resistant shingles but by no means does this mean algae proof. Eventually you may get algae but you don't need to clean it until this happens. Some roofs for some unexplained reason do not get algae streaks.
  2. Thompson's Tinted Wood Protector

I know thompson's is junk. Just wondering if someone had any luck with stripping.
  3. Man Alan you have them right in your hands. Draining the lake and all for you to do this dock. Nice work looks great. If all goes well and the AC gets here I should have a pic next week. Not a grand deck or dock like some pictured but hey it's wood!
  4. I am in the process of finishing a deck for my son inlaw before the 4th of July and we have decided on AC Sequoia for the rear deck and front porch steps. The question I have has to do with the front porch. He has was seems to be treated wood for the supports and railings. Now these look to be stained and have been there for almost a year but they have not greyed at all. It is a light brown color. I was told it was not stained. What can be used to clean this so it would be ready for a stain. We were thinking on using a white Deckscapes solid stain and the steps being the AC sequoia. The reason for the color choice on the front is that the house is a grey to tan vinyl and all the trim is white and the porch is actually cement with a cinderblock wall. One other question is how long before the deck is usable after staining with the AC? We did a test spot today on the railing and it looks great.
  5. Advice Needed

Got to thinking on the way home from SW and thought this might be Wolmanized wood. Don't know as I have not used any.
  6. Advice Needed

90+ all week. The reason I asked was that I have never seen this type of wood. They say it is only treated but I have never seen treated wood this color. Oh well going to get some stripper and see what happens today. I will try to get pics today as well.
  7. Advice Needed

  12. The same D%MN raccoon

You could alwasy call Vexcon from LA to come over and get :lildevil: I was :rotfl: so hard by the time I got to the end of this thread there were tears. You might suggest the AFV and split it with the home owner. Maybe you could get Larry the Cable Guy to do a voice over for the video. Now that there is funny I don't care who you are.
  13. TWP Cedartone

For that amount I wouldn't take the lid off the stain bucket. Or for that matter put the bucket in my truck.

  15. Recently laid off my tech job I have gotten set up for roof cleaning and well on my way there. I have decided to add wood restoration also and I have narrowed it down. I have seen the Bakers first hand and have samples of each color. I have a sample chain made up on pressure treated wood and cedar as the colors have a little difference depending on the wood type. Now I think I will get chains made up for AC and RS. From what I have been reading these seem to be the three top performers. What are your opinions? Great information here.
  16. New and learning

Yea my decisions have been based on what I have read here and other forums. I plan on having a drill mixer any how as that is the best way to mix besides shaking and I'm not about to stand there shaking a 5 gallon bucket. LOL I called AC today and they are sending 4oz samples so I can get some sample chains made up. Like I did with Bakers I am going to use PT for one chain and cedar fence boards for the other. An old timer educated me on the difference in color based on the wood types. I have not seen the AC or Ready Seal in person like I have the Baker's so I have yet to evaluate. Now that I have my products picked out I need to practice on my deck in stripping and preparing the wood. I will use my son inlaws deck for staining practice as it is about 6 month old PT and about 9 months when I am ready to do it as he is in Iraq and waiting for him to come home to pick the color.
  17. Should we be supporting new startups?

I am new to these forums and have learned alot of information by reading. I am basically forced to start my own business or move to the NE or CA and I don't want to do either. Now because of these forums I have a low pressure rig set up for under $1200 ladders, tank and trailer included. There are always going to be hacks and weekend warriors and tight wads to deal with but there is only so much room for that kind of work. People will pay extra for quality work if that is what they are shopping for. All of you that have been doing this kind of work for a long time have seen one person quit and another take his place. It does not decline. Kind of like an infestation of pests, one dies and another is born. I have seen this in the telecom industry where I come from. Maybe that person you help will become your best resource. Say you have so many jobs you can't keep up. What are you going to do? Buy more equipment and hire more employees? Then it only lasts for 3 months. Why not sub out to your trainee because you are sure they are doing thing like you taught them? Maybe not exactly but the same general idea, and most importand the same end result. You both make a little off the job and you have a customer for life if you can keep them. Now you will need a non compete between you as the customer should remain with the original company. Great thread.
