  1. Show us your ugliest deck

The liability of showing the photos is just too high.... LOL
  2. Unusual Powerwashing estimate today.

I seem to remember people getting calls like this a couple of years ago and then not getting paid.
  3. New Cleaning Magazine

I got this notification from a connection on LinkedIn. Even though it is a cleaning magazine for interior house cleaning I thought it would be useful for information that can cross industries. Cleaning Business Today - April 2013
  4. Powerwashing with snow on the ground

Hell, last year we got 8 inches of snow the first week of June! Not much to pressure wash around here unless you want to clean off some pine beetles.
  5. Stripping, Sanding, Staining a deck

No, on the labels the main ingredient in the box stores is sodium hypochlorite in their so called strippers and cleaners. Oh and it brightens too all in one step.
  6. Stripping, Sanding, Staining a deck

Don't listen to the naysayers. But you do need to change the approach. The strippers at the box stores are not near caustic enough. Most of them are sodium hypochlorite based and that does not strip the stain your pressure washer does. That deck is one that most professionals would run from because of the amount of time it will take to do the job. You will have to have the stripper shipped if you want the good stuff. Where ever you get the stripper, also get the neutralizer and this needs to be done while the wood is still wet from stripping. When the stripper is applied, it does not work immediately and needs some dwell time. You may even have to mist the wood to keep it wet so the stripper continues to work and you get enough dwell time. The vertical surfaces are going to be your tough ones. You may want to consider going with a 2 tone look. A darker semi transparent will work great with a white handrail.
  7. The Chemical Doctor

Hey Steve good to see you. I agree Mike is a good guy. When I was in Tennessee I bought from him.
  8. How to clean this?

It does not have to be rust, the iron in the soil is what gives it the red color and that is rust. Just not what you are used to seeing.
  9. How long are your estimates good for?

About 1 page.... Just kidding. I give 90 days but I have also been known to take them even later than that. I don't think that 90 days the gas prices will change that much. For a deck maybe $5-$10 depending on how far you have to drive. Mine are all mostly within 30 miles and that is only 4 gallons there and back. Even if gas went up $1 per gallon that is 8 gallons for drive time and max 2 gallons for pressure washer so $10. Now this might be different on a log or wood siding home where the equipment will be running a lot more.
  10. A forum signature...

Try this http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/profile.php?do=editprofile If that does not work, under the biz link directory there is a forum actions drop down and then choose edit profile. You should be able to change the signature from there.
  11. Payment

I'll bet the grass feels different now. Congrats
  12. Concrete stain removal?

Jason, give David at Southern Stain a call. He deals with this all the time.
  13. No such thing as waterborne oil based. It is impossible to mix water and oil. I have seen this before and it is a marketing gimic. It is either water or oil but not both. Now to answer your question, no. You will find around here that supplies are about the only thing bought from SW with the exception of the deckscapes solid colors when doing a 2 tone effect.
  14. Stain removal

Paint! Plant a big bush in front of the stains? Sometimes there are stains that will just not come out.
  15. I have created a new site and would appreciate any feedback Feel free to sign up, it's free. All I ask for is 2 articles per year. http://deckstainingtips.com Still a work in progress but it comes up on page 1 for "deck staining tips" and "deck sealing tips". I just turned it on Sunday.
  16. Just wanted to give a little update. The site is doing well with the exception of people listing their business but that is their choice. Beth you might be interested to know that your listing is doing well. As a matter of fact for the search term "deck staining company germantown md" the map page was coming up #1 as of about 1 minute ago from here anyways. See what happens when you search places like "deck staining germantown md" or "deck staining houston" I am finding the map page coming up on the front page in both areas. Check out Louisville also, these seem to be competitive areas. The site is FREE and I am not selling anything. The Facebook page now has 91 followers but only 15 contractors have taken advantage of the listings. The whole object is to make less room for your competitor on the front page. With spring approaching, I checked the stats this evening and there was a whopping 96% increase in traffic. We had well over 500 visitors in the last 30 days and 47% of those came from search engines. This site was truly created to help you and me. I do not sell any products so I have nothing to bug you with for sales. The only thing I have for sale is ad space on the front page under the preferred applicators but I do not bug anyone for that either. It just helps compensate me for my time. The only thing that I really gain is local domination in my area. The site is also now on page 1 for "deck staining company" and "deck stain applicator" So it is your choice if you want FREE help or not. Happy Staining.
  17. Old redwood stain removal on cedar fence

Stripping it is the only logical choice unless you really want to sand.... LOL I get my stain stripper (you have to be specific here) from Southern Stain and Seal just google them. Mix is comparable to HD-80 but comes premeasured for 4 gallon mixes. Just rip the bag open and keep going.
  18. Facebook Changes???

Should have paid attention 2 weeks ago when it all started.... LOL
  19. Thanks guys, I hope it helps all get work. After they read how much goes into restoring wood they may just hire someone.... LOL
  20. Put this together from some photos that were submitted.
  21. Yes I did make the video my self, kind of. Animoto is an online video creator where you upload the photos and pick the music and they generate the video automatically. Thanks Russ, Unfortunately the text you see is the limit of 2 lines at least on the level that I purchased. I don't know about the higher level yet but it looks the same. I will keep that in mind the next one.
  22. This site will function like the deckstainingtips.com site only this one is dedicated to concrete, stone, brick and masonry staining and sealing. Check it out at http://concretesealingtips.com There are still going to be a few changes on the back end but it is basically finished and ready. We also have DIRECT access to 3 different stain and sealer manufacturers because as you know, there is not a one size fits all product out there.
  23. The InnerSeal from Wakefield Mfg will help with that issue. It is a penetrating sealer that when it settles in the bottom of the sealer penetration is sitting around 64 mills below the surface while the top edge of the sealer sits at around 23 mills below the surface. This leaves the surface available to be coated with what ever you want to use. This sealer can also be colored. Basically you need Silica + Alkali + Water for ASR to form so what happens is the InnerSeal removes the Alkali and the water from the equation thus stopping the reaction. InnerSeal has also been tested to improve the compressive strength of the concrete by up to 60%. With Moisture coming up from the ground, sealing the surface will not stop the reaction as the moisture will just wick up from the ground. Here are 3 links for info. The stuff is not cheap but there is nothing that can touch the technology. It has to be cheaper that new concrete. Since you are in the land of extreme regulation, you will be glad to know that all of these products are water based with no voc's. http://www.wakefieldmfg.com/ProblemSolutions.html http://www.wakefieldmfg.com/DPS.html http://concretesealingtips.com/penetrating-concrete-seale/ There is a PDF on this page to look at. We can get right to the top guy at wakefield also if you have any questions. He knows concrete better than the back of his hand.
  24. This just in!!!
