  1. After reading this thread, I find it interesting that when a (supposed) homeowner asks a question, many of the responses refer him to buy from a supplier/friend of these BBS's instead of the easiest way. Which for the homeowner will be to stop at the nearest pool supply and get 12.5%...add some Dawn dish soap....apply with a pump sprayer....or DS it...or Deckster....or a bucket and mop. Let it sit 10 minutes and rinse with low pressure (black nozzle or garden hose). EPA?....nice scare tactic!

Bottom line, are we being honest with our intentions when we so obviously steer someone like this in a self-serving direction that appears to not be in his best interest.

Lastly, I have to respond to the 1st answer in this thread.....the deck does not look that dirty? Soap and water? Oh Please!! Soap and water, without something to kill that black growth, ain't going to get it done. Or was that another self-serving move to get the guy to fail and then hire one of us?

    Just asking? Question With Boldness.......

  2. Done with Ready Seal..except for past customers that need a reseal.

I've been using Pittsburgh Paints the last two years and have been extremely happy with it. Yes its a Linseed oil based stain but A) I have not had any mold issues with it and B) Even though its a "film-former", the product holds up very well with minimal scuffing over a two year period and I live in an area that sees very harsh winters. The biggest downside is that, unlike RS, you do have to do a full strip before reapplying BUT this stuff strips off like butter with dilluted strippers. Lastly, I get it from my local P-Paints store for around $18 a gal.

I was amazed to see this post as I used PPG toners for years (because it was cheap and local and had 3 year warranty) then switched to RS this spring. I will never use PPG again except for maintaining past jobs. It is so difficult to get a good looking job without lap marks and you cannot get good results applying film-formers like PPG in mid-day sun. RS is a contractors dream and for the extra couple bucks a gallon, it saves you $$ in many other ways. I got more referral jobs since using RS for one season than all the years I used PPG. In my area, I have been competing against guys that were using RS and now I know why they are......more than that........the folks at RS and Sunbrite have been great to work with.....gotta have that customer service. The boys at PPG were clueless.....just bucket pushers......

Is PPG still working well for you?

  3. I've actually been working with samples of the sealer for last the few months. I did up 10 different samples in total... 5 with the sealit applied to them THEN stained several days later. The other 5 were just stained with the stain & sealer. I applied Ready Seal, Wolman F & P, Wolman Raincoat WB, TWP 101 Cedar to 4 and left the last clear. We'll see what they look like in the spring.

Sealit claims the product will extend up to 300% longer than without the preseal. Weather and sun will tell the tale :)

I like the idea if it's marketed correctly and yes it's easy to put down. I see it being beneficial to homeowners and an additional measure to protecting their wood but in no way could you market it for the asthetics of the product.

    Gregg,

It has been 2 years, what are the results of your tests? In my area we have a group advertising like crazy for the last 2 years that they can seal your deck and it will last 30 years and is the greatest thing since sliced bread. They mention it is like "petrifying" the wood. I am trying to determine if this is something I need to be putting into our business model as a customer's option! Thanks in advance!
