  1. Yes, I am very interested in the lumber.

I will need several 18' planks and about 50 1x1's that is for arbor.

Built in 1983. There is no way I can match this wood with brand new wood.

1150 sq. ft. Thought maybe RS lumber might be a way if the wood has aged a bit. And what species do they offer.

I will also need to factor pricing for pre stained replacement wood and shipping cost'.

Customer is selling property. This one would be my oldest resto to date.

Plus she is leaning towards Dark Red. I love that tone.

  2. Hello Jamie P my products are VOC compliant I have MSDS sheets that prove it. If you need one please get in contact with me at 972-423-0211.

    Hi Jamie,

Welcome to TGS. I think you will find that there are alot of firm believers in whatever product works best for them. That's what the thread is actually about that Jon started.

Some swear by BGA and some swear by RS or AC or many others.

I myself am glad that there are those willing to do test' of various products. I have done test' myself with BGA & RS.

I used tons of BGA in Atlanta Ga. as well as RS. And even tons more here in Houston. I just simply like RS in my experiences.

Others keep a BGA bible by their nightstand.

Either way we are all glad you are here. No need to be defensive, because you are witnessing firsthand actual users and feedback of your product.

This stuff is useful to all of us. We are anal about this stuff ( no offense Jon).

    We love the wood biz.

    Again, welcome to TGS.

  3. Beth,

That old thread is downright hilarious. The pelican picture is amazing.

    Adrian,

That is some foul berry bird poop. Aside from hand scrubbing with soap and water, or Jim's suggestion of steel wool and stain, don't know. If the bird stuff has dried, sanding might work, but if still wet, I'd be afraid of driving the berry juice down into the wood, especially pressure treated pine.

This is making me sick to my stomach, think I'll stop now.

Well, here's the scoop on the poop.

Peirce, with RS contacted me and made a great suggestion that worked a bit. Algae brush with mineral spirits.

I did not score an algae brush, but used a stiffy on a few of the spots.

The mineral spirits did the trick on those spots for the most part. This method will have it's advantage on the day of the upcoming spray. In case the birds do this sh&&&&&t to me again. The min. spirits do not affect the stain he says and can spray right away.

However I could clearly see where the spirits "offset the ox'd areas.

    soooooo....

Next method on a few more poop drops wash good ol' soapy water. Just could not get it below the surface.

Blah !!! waste of time. No affect. Again the soap offset the ox'd areas.

Next method was (ugh ) sanding which made a big difference.

But the tractor parts that hold my shoulder together let me know I need better sand equipment. Result= Very slight hint of the skyrat juice. Easily hidden with any stain.

My last and final approach was actually the most successful result.

I reapplied some hydrox in very light mix. Then reapplied some ox to that area. Basically I just started over on a 150 sq. ft. section.

I re-applied to all the other test areas as well. and it did the trick.

I am also going to keep the steelwool and stain hint for the day of the spray as well as the min. spirits. Just in case the skyrats come back with some more grape juice, or choco milk, or licorice whips.

For the record or for anyone that cares, the purple poop is still on the concrete. None of these methods budged the stain at all.

Plus the customer is so cool with the overall outcome of the "black to white" driveway that she doesn't even give a sh&&&&&t about the sh&&&&&t.

But, i would still like to wow her by getting those stains out as well.

Lithium Hydroxide....... hmmmmmm..... i'll get back to you on that one.

  4. 1000 sq. ft. deck. Stripped and prepped 2 days ago. No Problems, looked good when I left. Most here know my abilities.

All of the Tannin family came out of the wood. i,e, pine cones, needles, pecans, lots of pecans.

I come back this morning to knock out the flatwork that suffers from the same tannin family. Tackled it ok for 5ksqft and being an old guy. Tannin gone. All clean except for these purple crap stains.

Well some form of bird flock decided they wanted to roost in the 100 ft. pines above the deck. Purple Poo everywhere filled with gooey berries and whatever else comes out of a skyrats belly, on my nice prepped deck.

AAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggggggg. I walked away and went to do the flatwork just to see if it would come out of the concrete.

No luck. all the stains gone except the purple poo skyrat delight.

I tried straight spot to spot 12%, tried hydrox spot to spot, even tried ox acid to maybe change the color of it.

No Luck. I am not as concerned about the concrete.

Will this crap come out of wood?

It looks like a rain shower of PURPLE POO SPLASHES.

    anyone have the fix?

I felt like a novice trying different mixes today, my shoulders are sore, I missed Becker, I'm running behind, didn't even eat breakfast today.

....help !!!!! it's all stacking up. Trainwreck. Need a clone of me to be on 3 other jobs.

    ugh!!!! Kleenex please.

All because of some stupid SH&T and it's purple.

  5. So is everyone up for a Baker/TWP shootout versus Readyseal??? :)

Anyone have a gal or two of RS they can send me? Prob would want dark red or med red. For Bakers/TWP I'll either use the SuperCedar or the TWP Rustic.

Sound like a plan, Rick? Rick, tell me the exact prep standard and app standard you want me to use on the RS half. It will be new treated wood, aged about 2-4 weeks. Let me know the EXACT app standard you want me to follow. Will have to be applied by either brush or roll...can't spray. Need to know:

    Heaviness of coat.

    Time between coats.

    Wipe off?

    Back brush?

Basically, tell me the most perfect way you want me to do it, and that's what I'll do.

For the TWP side, I'll apply wet-on-wet coats within 10min of app, back-brushed.

Anyone have any other parameters they want me to follow?

Keep in mind, this is a deck with three sides of rails. Do you want the RS half nearer the wall, or nearer the exterior rails? The deck gets 100% sun all day, no coverage anywhere near it.

Rick, as the RS ambassador, I'll follow any suggestions you may have.

I was just going to suggest that.

  6. Adrian, I know Baker's is actually a TWP formula. I think they just add pigment and spirits to it. I never heard the brothers thing. Where did you hear that?

Maybe it was Shane that told me.

Family owned then a spat then a split. Now compete.

It's been a while, but knew there was a plant to manufacture it in Plano or Lewisville.

Either way, I have worked with Shane before and he has a keen sense for blending colors as well. I don't think he doctored the pictures. He may have. But I don't think so.

He had a real professional camera that he tried to sell to me a one point, but it was out of my price range. It was a Canon. Not your regular digi cam. He likes to take the shots while it is still wet. That makes a big difference in the final "dried" result for a pic, as well as the overall outcome of the project itself.

RS has a "glow" not a "glare"

I have found neither on Bakers.

Funny because if it is the same ( or close) they should produce the same ( or close ) results

For the record, Shane has given me a few decks in my area that had failed bakers on it and he simply didn't want the projects.

I'm greatful for the work he gave a couple of yrs. ago, but those decks have RS on them now and have not had call backs at all.

I have always felt that the our wood ( south westish) varies from the northern wood even if it is the same species. Just different weather all the way around.

Some of the "Fancy" stains just don't hold up to the Texas heat at all.

But hey, whatever works for you is what works.

  7. Isn't Bakers and Rs made by two brothers here in Tx.? Little variations on each formula.

They compete with each or had a falling out between them? Or something to that effect.

I have used both, and RS seems to last longer. Especially at the marinas where I have customers.

I had to re-do a deck stained with Bakers over a lake within 6 months one time. Shane absorbed the cost as Bakers rep. My customer wasn't happy and hasn't called back since.

    BUT.... I hear ya Ken.

I have used RS ever since. Distributor is the best I've ever had and they keep a pretty generous supply on hand.

  8. I might get kicked around on this one but, Have you stripped any decks before?

HD-80 is a good product where you are able to mix it at whatever strength you need.

Personally I would not use anti-freeze with HD-80.

I am sure it is alot like Bourbon in your coffee in the morning.

"It can be done, but, probably isn't very well accepted practice"

Stick with the instructions on the jug of HD-80. It should serve you well.

    Welcome to TGS.

I have heard of this, that you mention before vaguely around the bongfire.

I have also heard in the days of old, that kerosene or deisel fuel was used on wood to preserve it.

..... that's probably what caused the development of VOC regs.

I think the HD-80 will treat you fine.

Be sure to neutralize the wood with ox acid or citralic acid afterwards.

    again, welcome to TGS.
