Hot water skid direction
big mike replied to map_911's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
If you're running a single axle trailer, you would be wise to center the skid in the middle of the trailer, most likely in the forward area towards the tongue. Even weight distribution helps your rig run down the road straight, and reduces tire wear, etc... -
Well, for commercial work it's easy; health issues, slip hazards, curb appeal. For residential it's a little tougher sell. I focus on the effects of mold and how it can effect them, their children, their pets, etc. Curb appeal is secondary in this economy, but still a viable concern. Even if a home is losing value, why accelerate it further by letting mold and mildew take hold? Many folks spend time at home vs. traveling in summer months, so deck upkeep is important to them even more now.

Pumps and equipment for awning cleaning
big mike replied to Mark Gallison's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Mark, We just use a Shurflo. We have two tanks on board, one with the cleaner and one with rinse water. Usually run this right out of the F150, and offer window washing as well. It's a good up-sell if you have a shopping center or something similar, but targeting strictly awnings is tough. Good luck. -
Is it good stuff? - Yes Does it last? - about the same as any other oil.

Cabot's turning black?????
big mike replied to nitrox2595's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Jim, the ASQ is more "sponge like". We do about 50/50 cedar and PTP, and we've seen a lot of the newer ASQ treated stuff. It really soaks up the stain, but I still only go 2 coats. I'm kinda working on the maintenance for it too, but like you, we use bleach for maintenance washing and it seems to do the trick. I have three ready to go this spring that were new, and need a color coat this year. We'll see if it absorbs like it did when new. I like having some testing to do. Makes the work a bit more interesting. -
Cabot's turning black?????

Sounds like the Penofin "blue label". That stuff always turned black because of the "exotic rosewood oil" formula. Mildew loves that stuff. -
Favorite latex deck stain?
big mike replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I find it humorous that some of you balk at the idea of using a solid acrylic. Why wouldn't you take a job like that? Because it's against your principles?? that's just poor business IMHO. I want to help my customers make their deck look good, period. Sometimes this requires something other than the "strip, and refinish" that we most often practice. I service several townhome associations that require a specific color and product. Do I turn that down on priciple? Heck no!! Money is green and thats tho only "color requirement" I have. Do I try to steer folks towards RS? Of course, but some structures are just not a good option for oil. When we use solid acrylic, I call up SW.... -

SW Deckscapes for us. Use it a lot, and it lasts for 3-5 years consistently, even with our climate. We use it for railings on two-tones and full acrylic jobs. Some decks are just not salvageable, and this stain makes them decent again. -
What causes a burst valve, to..... well burst?
big mike replied to Isaac B's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Yes, replace it. Once it is activated, it's been compromised. These are typical wear parts. You may need to adjust your unloader, because that should relieve pressure before it gets high enough to activate the pressure relief.. -
Shouldn't be any issues.

I was going to say that as well, but I'm glad you did!!!

Adrian, Make sure you take time off (away) from work. It's simple in theory, but many never really take a break from "thinking" about their biz. You may say, yeah I do take time off, but do you really?? For me, I have a built in 4 month vacation every year (winter). It makes me hungry to work when I get the chance, and by late fall I'm tired of it, and need a break. Also, be happy with the fact that you have two income streams in a time when many have none.....

What causes a burst valve, to..... well burst?
big mike replied to Isaac B's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Burst valves usually burst from a pressure spike (but its not a leak, its a heavy pressure stream of water). I've had them freeze and burst as well. All they are is a brass cylinder a spring and a teflon disc. If it's leaking, try tightening it with an Allen wrench. If your flow switch is leaking as well, it probably needs tightening. Remember to check ALL fittings and connections at least monthly, stuff shakes loose in transit..... -
What exactly do you mean by that???

Landa makes pumps?? That's news to me. I've run General, CAT, Udor, and Giant. I like Giant, but they're expensive. Cats are good, but expensive too. Udor and general would be my choice, and General would win because of ease of getting rebuild parts, and I have lots of spare parts....

Balazs, where you been? I mix caustic beads, sodium metasilicate, trisodium phosphate, and propylene glycol for a downstream stripper (works awesome). For concrete I mix SH with PowerStroke as well but only use that mixture in a pump up on the main oil drip line (downstrem PowerStroke for the rest). The only time I use SH is for wood restoration or concrete. ALWAYS neutralize with a mild acid. I've started using a 50/50 mix of citric and oxalic for wood restoration (I think they call that citralic, LOL)

A compelling argument, true, but flawed in several ways: This statement sounds very much like a socialist thought pattern. Spread the wealth equally. Fortunately, ours is a capitalist society. Our nation was built, and remains the greatest on the planet because of it. True, to those on the bottom it appears unfair, but ask any citizen from another country if they would rather be at the bottom in the USA, or where they are currently at? Most would chose this evil capitalist society over their own in a heartbeat. Also, understand that business is run by those on the top,. If they deem it necessary to spend that money a certain way, who are we to tell them no? They are free to run their business however they want, and that's the difference. That's what makes American companies cutting edge, competitive, and successful. Not true at all. You must understand that a company is only as good as its weakest link. There's a delicate balance as to how much compensation a base employee should earn before it becomes detrimental to the business as a whole. Look at the auto industry and how the high wages have crippled the entire industry. Its a shame, and there's millions of unemployed folks who would jump on an auto industry job at half the current rate. A prime example of "spreading the wealth" around. The people at the top always have the best interests of the people at the bottom. Their own success depends on it. Of course those on the bottom are always going to feel slighted, but this enables the quality workers to rise up and become those at the top. Those folks didn't start out as CEO's. Rod, forgive me but I'm 90% German. Debating is in my blood. (my wife calls it arguing).

Re instituting slavery?? That's a bit of a stretch if you ask me. Don't try to play us off as naive on this subject Rod. I was once part of a large union org, and we did everything in our power to get our candidates elected. Big money on TV advertising, radio, billboards, etc. How do you think an inexperienced, junior Senator got elected as president? Acorn, SEIU, etc. Why should these groups have an advantage over corporations? They spend money freely, and smear those that they oppose, but no one deems them as "evil". The problem I see here is that the groups who overwhelmingly support Democratic candidates, now have some competition. Republicans support business, and we should welcome the support. Who do you think supplies America with jobs? It's the businesses, not the workers. First, this was a ruling dealing with slaves, and their right to be deemed US citizens, and have constitutional rights (I don't think anything has been reversed). It has nothing to do with political campaign funding. It was also ruled in 1857. I would suggest to you, that you watch something other than MSN and Kieth Olberman. These people are just freaking out because they see the political "writing on the wall"

I disagree. How long have special interest groups such as Sierra Club, and labor unions, others had unlimited power to lobby and financially support those they want in power? Its about time that everyone was afforded the right to support whomever they wish, without being excluded because they were a corp. or whatever. Just because the playing field is being leveled, it doesn't mean they are throwing out the right to cast a vote as you see fit. By the way, most jobs are sent overseas because greedy labor unions force these corporations to find affordable ways to produce their wares. Just look at the auto industry, and what union labor has done for them.... I am in agreement with William on this one.

I see this as an opportunity to loosen the stranglehold the EPA has on hard working business owners like us.

Concrete Cleaner Maintenance
big mike replied to Don Windle's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Negative on the lube!! Go easy on the high pressure swivels (your maintenance guy is right). Too much lube will slow down your spray bar, and ruin seals quickly. Your high pressure swivel is not like a wheel hub. -

"Clean" would be my description.
