Exotic woods
mas3372 replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
There is genuine african and genuine american mahogany. The list of exotics goes on and on. Woodworking is my other passion and I use exotics quite a bit. Purple heart would be a beautiful and affordable decking material, it is more abudant in brazil than maple is in north america. If you want to see what some of the woods look like, I linked a few of the suppliers I use that offer pics. http://www.hearnehardwoods.com http://www.righteouswoods.com Some exotics are cheaper than domestic and some are so expensive. ie, ebony is about $50 for a board foot (square foot that is 1 inch thick) Exotic does not mean tropical either as many believe, it just means it is not native. Many of the tropical exotics are very hard, full of resin and vibrant in colors. These woods need lots of UV protection to keep their vibrants. However, once sanded their natural color returns. I could talk all day about wood, a truley wonderful natural resource that most take for granted. There are also some more pics of exotic woods on my website if you are interested in seeing them. www.customwoodworkingusa.com -
Hey, I need to wash my Chief's house to get it ready for another paint job. Wood siding painted white. I have heard you need something to degloss it. I am looking for some brands that are used and application methods. Any other help for paint prep would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Stripped my first deck
mas3372 posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I got a job about a two weeks ago to strip and reseal a deck. 12 x 16 with 45 square spindles, 2 steps and 33 feet or railing. Priced it $475 with sealer. There is a new section that was just added and the other 2/3rds had a grey stain on it that she said of Dafoe. Had to wait out the first week with the rain up in New England. Went over there yesterday and it was drizzling a bit. Mixed remove from sunbrite 3 to 1 instead of 5 to 1 because I figured the rain was going to dilute it a bit more. Sprayed on with a garden sprayer and let is sit 30 minutes. To my surprise, the existing finish came off like a slurry and washed right away. I instantly loved the fact that this old grey weathered deck looked better than the new section. Finished it off with some oxalic and will be sealing it tomorrow. The HO is persistant that I use Dafoe again so I did. Couple gallons of natural cedar. My whole point here is to say that Deck stripping was more enjoyable than expected and I really wish I took before and after pics. Now my next question is, what is the prefered sealer appplication method Brush, Spray, or Roll???? -
Stripped my first deck
mas3372 replied to mas3372's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thanks for the input. I know my smile will be short lived once I encounter a tougher job. It was a great starter deck and the cards were in my favor. Tomorrow I think I will roll on the sealer. Mostly deck, plus the hand rails. I should be able to roll the spindles as well and touch up with a brush as I go. Who knows, I have a sprayer on hand so thats a possibility as well. As for strippers. After reading them all, I am think I should just invest in HD 80 since it is the strongest yet I can weaken it if need be. Does this make sense of should I have a few different kinds on hand.? -
Hello, I was asked to price a fence job for a friends neighbor. She has 42 sections of weathered pine fencing, 8 foot long sections, 6 foot high. 336 liner feet or 2016 squre feet. The fence is structually sound and looks as if it was never sealed. I will naturaly try to upsell to have it sealed as well. My questions are these. How much would you charge just to clean? How much to clean and seal. As I said, weathered a bit, no apparent previous sealer, some green mold. The area to be cleaned includes the area that are both sides and the areas that only one side - so the area listed is the total area to be serviced. One last question, one would you recommend to clean it, 12% with some soap for example. Thanks, Mike

When I scub the gutters with the extention pole and brush, I look for bug nests, cocoons, hives, etc. and scrub them a bit with the same solution and so far they come right off. No real extra time involved.

What is the most effective way to get jobs?
mas3372 replied to mdspowerwashing's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Excellent website you found odd jobs. They did a search for me for the following Homes worth over $350k, House hold income of $125 and up Age 25-60 100% owned homes homes built between 1990 and 2004 all within 10 miles of my house they came up with 1150. I will buy 1000 for $30, This saves so much on targeting and wasted postage to so many homes. Now I just have to design my post card and have them send it out. I think the whole package with the posting and sending will be about $275, can't beat that. -

mas3372 replied to mas3372's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The total square foot is 2016, most sections are only one side with a few both sides equallying a total of 2016 ft. It is also for a clean only. -
pricing a fence job
mas3372 replied to mas3372's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Good points and thanks for the input. The fence job is in west warwick which neigbors Coventry. I am certain the demographics there are fairly less. I agree that cheaper isn't always better and by no means do I want to leave money on the table. I am in this to make money not lose money. I will rethink my quote to her. Yes she can replace the fence for about $2500 if she does the labor and seals it herself but does she want to do that every couple of years. Looking at the neighborhood she lives in, a husband in Iraq and a klunker in the driveway, I don't think she can afford such an upgrade. But as you put it Ken, It is not my job to offset the cost of living. It is what it is and she dosn't want the work done, more work will come along. thanks again, Mike I will offer her -

pricing a fence job
mas3372 replied to mas3372's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
the problem with charging that much is the customer can run to home depot and buy brand new sections for $45 each and it simply just screw them to the existing posts. -

Thanks shane. Given the demographics of the area, I don't think I will get away with that much but I will give it a shot. It is very accessable. The fathest point is 175 feet from where I would park so I have enouth house. The lawn along the fence is thin with no flowers or plants to worry about. Most of the fence is only one side except the front sections that seperate front and back yard. You think 12% as strong as I can get it on there should work. I use E-Plus with a dash of polmolive now, any good for fence?. -

Poll: What type of pressure washing rig do you use?
mas3372 replied to mdspowerwashing's question in Residential Pressure Washing
I use a 12 x 6 tandem axle trailer. 5.6 GPM machine 24 horse over the wheels with a 55 gallon tank for water shortfall. 2 HP hose reels off the back, 200' and 50' and 100' reel of supply garden hose feeding a water softner then to the tank. Up front on the tounge is a tool box with all my lances and tools and odds and ends. Between the washer and tool box is my chems and my steel eagle plus road cones, etc. Along the side of the trailer is a 4" pvc pipe hosing long lances and extension poles. Had a 300 gallon tank put proved to be overkill and took up to much room. -
Wet weather in New England

Rhode Island is a wash. Have a deck strip planned for tomorrow that needs to be changed. 3 houses washes I will try to fit in though. -
Another note on chlorine, it is a bronchoconstricter, which means when inhaled it constricts your airway. Pretty much causes a severe asthma attack wether you have asthma or not. It will close your airway so much that you won't even be able to tell 911 whats wrong or where you are.

Hello I started off my first wash by attempting to downstream. Horrible luck. I had a weak chem. mix and a horrible draw thru 200' of hose. I instantly switched to a m5 x jet and have been very happy. However, Recently I have been reading about so many that love to down stream, they claim to use less chems, work fast and do just as good of a job. Now I am tossed. Given the opportunity to achieve the same results I do with an m5 x jet thru downstreaming, I think I would surely switch just over the lugging bucket drama. So to all the hardcore downstreamers, please help me here. How would I go about accomplishing the same success in the same time frame by way of downstreaming and what would recommonded as far as a downstreamer and tips to achieve the sometimes needed 30 feet. Please, if you downstream, chime in. I am new enought at this that I would like to determine my prefered way sooner than later. Thanks, Mike

Garden furniture - what now it's clean?
mas3372 replied to Tim UK's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Teak oil is for hard wood that is pourous. Mahogany, rosewood, teak, ipe, etc. I built some mahogany chairs 2 years ago from Baku Mahogany and oil them every spring. They weather a bit but do not grey. left untreated they would surely weather far more. I would highly consider what Ken has to say. Whild teak, mahogany and other woods can withstand rot due to weather better than most woods, they still should be treated to help preserver there beauty. Also remind your customer that if they are teak, teak is a very expensive wood and a few extra bucks to help protect is well worth it. Fot teak I would use 3 parts Teak oil thinned with about 1 part mineral spirits to help is soak in on the first coat and straight teak oil on a second coat. If you can find a teak oil with UV inhibititors, all the better. I may be new to pressure washing but my true passion is building furniture which I do every chance I get. -
I try to wear a mask every job. Only being 26 years old with 2 daughters I try to be safe. No to mention that my full time job is a fire fighter so my lungs take a beating there regardless. Every little bit of safety helps. I use the disposable masks for healthcare workers. I buy them as a medical supply store. A bit more money than the cheap home depot ones but much better. They block dust as well as moisture which is important with the chems. A box of 50 costs about $35 but one mask will last a half day to a day. The bleach although it is not a carcigen, gives me a bad head ache if I don't wear a mask. And even though something may not be carciogenic, who knows what else it can cause that we don't even know about yet. Case and point, HIV was around 10 years before it was discovered. Scary!!! I try to remember to wear a hat and goggles as well but are not that successfull. You eyes and skin can absorb so much.. One of the most important peices of PPE that I am faithful in remember is sun block. The sun is a carcigen and who wants skin cancer when it can be so easily avoided. Long story short, if you want to see your kids graduate and not walk around at 55 with those huge black sunglasses and carrying an Oxgen tank, protect yourself.

The wieght is why I down sized. My truck can pull it on the tandem axle trailer but I never used that much water to catch up for my pump so saving the weight saves gas. No to mention, much more room on the trailer. You can also do what I did and try to find a 55 gallon drum, usually at a car wash. Theser are great because they contained soap so it is not a hudge deal to clean out. Just turn it on its side, screw in a 2 inch pvc male adapter and plumb it from there.

newburyport is beautiful. For sure. Lots of money as well to help pay people like you and I. I agree a 300 gallon is over kill to just supplement flow. It would however be useful to do small jobs with no water supply. If you always have a water supply, 100 gallon tank is more than enough.
