  1. If you are referring to carbon/soot from the fireplace, use Prosoco fireplace cleaner, light scrubbing with a masonary style brush, a wet vac for rincing. Protect the areas around using plastic.

    If that is not what you are referring to I guess I misread and should have kept out of it.

  2. We only have one company that we charge gas and travel time to. It was set up that way from the begging because of how far they send us and traffic is unpredictable.

    As a general rule of thumb I wouldn't put a surcharge of any kind on a quote. To me it's about selling the job. Although price will always play a part, if you are selling on price you can only expect to be working for less. Touching lightly with the client (res./com.) about the icreased costs of doing business is all that should be required.

  3. When you buy a new car here you pay on top of the price

    Freight / Air tax / Gas tax / Administration / PPSA / Licence...

    Go buy a pair of dress pants and pay extra to have them hemmed. Go on a Vacation and airport taxes.

    Prices go up , prices go down. We are all entitled to make a living. Most people already expect things to change. Sell the job, costs are costs. Line paint has doubled over the last couple years. I'm not going to take a pay cut. The customer wouldn't so why should you.

    How you cover the increase is up to you.

    • Weather you put a fuel charge, or just a plain old price increase, someone is going to pay for the increase in the cost of doing business and it's not going to be me. I will be paying everyone elses added costs and they will be paying mine. Good or bad, nothing stays the same forever.


  5. How much of a family friend is he??? Seeing as there are so many different things that play a factor, I'd be more inclined to be point blank with him/her. What is it you want done and how often?? What is my competitor charging?? Can I match it or do I have to beat it?? The first rule in negotiation is the first guy to open his mouth on price loses. If he is a family friend offer to go do one for free.

    If he isn't willing to help a family friend out with prices, quote what you need to make a living, if you don't get it. OH WELL.


  6. Tomorrow we start cleaning a 650,000 sq.ft. warehouse. Last week we were cleaning clogged drains in an underground garage (and then video taping the end results). We have a couple dealership shop floors we do.

    I've come to realize there is more winter work out there if you just get a little creative with your equipment. I definately intend on being busy 12 months of the year. This will be my last slow season.

    Rome wasn't built in a day.


  7. Depending on the time of year or region you live in, it's a 3 step process any way. First step is to clean, then the polymeric sand must go in on dry pavers and be wet after installation, and completely dry before sealing. Three steps, just charge accordingly.

    Funny thing, Techniseal called while I've been away to see if I want to attend one of there classes in January. I actually do all the warranty work for their biggest competator, who asked me to go at there expense.

    I'm not saying I've enjoyed this thread but it's certainly been amusing. Talking politics is like trying to push zhit up hill with a pointed stick.

    I'll stick to looking for loop holes while I push my business onward. Certain people will make money, no matter who's in power, or the state the economy is in. IMO it's a matter paying attention to where there's a hole or gap I can fit in, and use to my advantage.. And to say that is selfish would be silly. As long as what you do is not underhanded. Do it.

    And now back to the debate.


  9. I love the idea. About 4 weeks ago we were 300-400 ft. away when the supply detached itself. NO water going to the one machine. It would have been nice to hit the kill switch instead of scrambling that whole way crapping knowing what ever it was, was not going to be good for the pump. Turned out to be the filter had worked its way loose. Maybe 45 seconds to a minute. Forgot I could run that fast.

    This is nothing new. MOST of our customers wouldn't even call on a $100 wash ad as they are educated and wouldn't trust them with there $400,000 + house. Sell Professionalism, leave the price shoppers to the other guys. Waisting energy on things you can't control is counter productive.

    Heres my thinking on a new ad.

    I'll wash any house for $25.00 (chemicals, equipment, trained and insured employees wearing company uniforms, employment/health insurance, fed tax, provincial tax, trucks and gas are all mandatory and extra) LMAO


  11. Yes this thread is old, but in my case fitting. Poured concrete steps on a new (2 months old) town house I ordered just for resale. I used Diedrich 202 (New masonary cleaner) on the full brick unit. Yes I got 98% of the new construction dirt (red clay) and the motar smears off the entire front, but some red stains still remaine on the steps. Any ideas. The builder is interested in what I (you) can do?????????????????

    Be the best at what you do.

    Charge a fair and value based price for a PROFESIONAL job.

    Build a loyal customer base.

    Leave the job knowing your customer "WILL" want to give your name out because it makes them look good and they want their friends and family to have the benefit of your services.

    Be the competition.

    Time to get off my soap box (or high horse).
