  1. Hey does anyone have any pics of amber on Ipe that they could send to me? I've never used it on Ipe and need to see what the final color will look like. Thanks
  2. Ok sounds good. Thanks guys
  3. Thanks for sharing Rod. I understand each individual has different situations and that when sending a crew out to do the jobs you have more liability with them not knowing as much about chemicals as you. I mix my supplies at the job and don't transport mixed ingredients. By buying raw ingredients I also support my local business from whom I purchase several different chemicals.
  4. I'm just curious as to why others are still buying stripper from manufacturers at a substantially higher price than making your own? I used to use F-18 and HD-80 but the past few years decided to make my own and have gotten the same results. I've stripped Behr (silicone), Sherwin williams Woodscapes, fresh TWP 100 series, Sansin Dec etc. without adding any booster. Granted I know a straight acrylic would need a water based solvent added to strip it successfully
  5. I would probably brush that job, with all the cutting in, especially since you aren't doing the trim.
  6. Yeah you're right. It will look much better than it does now. If he's wanting that color then that's what you'll have to do. I know a lot of homeowners like the solid stain/paint look on cedar siding. Makes it look like the Fiber Cement cedar print siding
  7. I just looked at a house Saturday that's gonna have to be priced just like this one. I definitely don't get the excitement with these jobs that I do when I can fully restore one and make the wood beautiful
  8. Yeah oil based stain sometimes doesn't wipe off latex paint very good, especially if it's not wiped up quickly. I would use latex Woodscapes solid on the siding and trim too if they wanted it done. It will take 2 coats
  9. Lol yeah I agree Rick! We who love wood find it a sin to cover it up. I would definitely charge extra for that house. With all the windows and dormers it wouldn't be an easy one. Steven is the stain/paint around the windows in good shape? Are they wanting that done too?
  10. Yeah that process, even though as a wood restoration contractor I hate anything remotely close to paint on wood. Sometimes it's what has to be done. I would xjet it with a strong house wash and apply 2 coats of Sherwin Williams Woodscapes and be done. With that stain you can brush. I might would brush that job
  11. Gutters aren't too bad, you can always spray and wipe
  12. As for the Harbor Freight buffers. I can't speak about the other tools they sell, but I can say that the buffers are good. I've buffed thousands upon thousands of sq.ft of wood with them. They're lighter than most and work great. For the best sanding tools you can't go wrong with Festool or Bosch
  13. I price more if for some reason I can't spray something. Spraying and back brushing provides the best finish for exterior wood. A lot depends on the stain you use as far as if you can just brush the stain. I almost always spray, it's faster and better, even when you have to mask off. I always remove downspouts and gutters too if need be. If not the gutters then use a spray shield or wipe the gutter off when spraying. I can't use AC down here in NC because of the mildew issues I've had with it.
  14. I use a Delavan pump sort of the same as Rod for applying chemicals and always use an airless(I've had both Titan and Graco, currently use a Graco). You have much more control with an airless and an unlimited supply of different types of coatings you can use. All I do is restore interior and exterior wood. I use a Titan Capspray 115 HVLP for fine finishing. If you want a good overall sprayer get a Titan air-assisted airless.
  15. Steven if you don't want to put out $200 plus on a Makita you can get some actually pretty nice buffers at Harbor Freight. While I love Makita tools and have several, you can get 4 or 5 buffers for the price of one of them. I use HF buffers all the time. I use the Osborn brushes almost exclusively, every once in a while I'll use the 3m. Get the 4" and 6" 80 grit brushes, both have their places. With stripped wood on exterior surfaces (for the most part) you're trying to knock off the fuzz instead of sanding, you'll be amazed at how much faster you will be.
  16. You're welcome Rick! Let me know what you find out. They will probably send you a gallon for free to test.
  17. Hey Rick that Dorado strip will strip darn near anything. It stays wet for a long time. The 3031 is probably what you need. Just stir it with a drill with paddle attachment. I know a Titan 440i will spray it easily and it's only about.5 gpm. Dorado is designed for airless spraying. Sooo much faster. Best to let it sit all night. You don't need oversized hose or anything of the sort. You're probably looking at 50-75 sqft a gallon. You'll love not having to brush on specialty strippers.
  18. Use a stain that doesn't have predominantly transoxide pigments. They're too transparent on old weathered wood no matter how you prep it(unless it's sanded even, which is almost impossible with old wood). I suggest Baker's Gray Away stain. I think your problem will be solved
  19. Rick, how many square feet do you have to do? Wish I could see the pic
  20. Dorado strip applied with an airless sprayer in the evening. Come back in the morning and scrape off the excess and then wash(may have to scrub the wood with some mild stripper to remove everything when you rinse) Apply it thick. It's expensive too. They'll send you a gallon for free to test it.
  21. I was wondering who you all would recommend as a supplier to purchase ipe or other hardwoods from. My parents are wanting to build a deck and I've designed it. Seeems like I remember Jim or someone up North mentioning a few years back of some suppliers that had the hardwoods for around the same price as pressure treated. Any help is definitely appreciated
  22. Thanks for the help everyone. Im gonna keep looking and try to make a decision. I like the light color of Garapa. Whats everyones thoughts on it?
  23. Probably ipe, but not set on it. All depends on the price.....Good to see you still around Jim. You staying busy now? Which hardwood would you recommend? Beth or Rick what do y'all think? I like the lighter colored woods...
  24. What's up Shane...haven't talked to you in forever. I see you're still spraying the best, the BGA. Your work looks great as always! I don't do that many jobs anymore but when I do I always use the Baker's. The best mildew resistance I've ever seen from any stain and I've used many.
