Deck Sanding
Greg R replied to RGilliam's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
+1 :) 1 hour to restrip vs. 8 hours of sanding = no brainer :) -
Deck Sanding
Greg R replied to RGilliam's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
depends on the finish too.... acrylics actually sand off pretty quick. Oils tend to gum the paper up. Typically though we're using 80 grit on orbitals or defurring pads. Sometimes it more cost effective to just restrip as well so it all depends. -

First Maintenance Coat

We were having mixed but similar experiences on some jobs as well. In speaking with Jake and the crew I don't think an answer was ever brought to light but mildew has been an issue on select projects. Your photos don't really appear as mildew to me but more that the color washed and faded out. These were after 1 year? -
How long are your estimates good for?

A freebie for the woodrows
Greg R replied to Adrian's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We usually tarp off a "spray booth".... works like a charm and no overspray gets through. I have went to the extent of buying an Ez-popup canopy even and building an 8x8 spray booth with heavy plastic but it was overkill and a pain to move. 2 or 3 mil plastic with canvas to weight it down still works the best. -
Winter activity-whats yours?

Plowing Snow and getting ready for Spring :) Have another business venture we're working on too. -
One of the best "family" sports out there IMO. I miss greatly the days of my dad and mom coming with us to the races. Mom didnt come too often as she was always afraid we were going to get hurt and she didn't want to see it happen. The sports become a little more dangerous obstacle wise than it was in the 80's and 90's IMO but I absolutely love it. Younger guys are throwing down some big a$$ jumps and taking it to the extreme. When 80cc riders (10-14 yrs old mind you) are doing 120' triples that I question on my 450 there something to be said about the young blood in the sport today :)

I went over to a 2009 Honda CRF450R this past year from a 2005 RMZ450 - it was all two strokes prior to that all the way back into the 80cc's bikes (25 years ago...). The 09 CRF450R is a rocketship. I started up some sites for reviews, pics, tech tips and such for the major motocrossers- check em out when you have the time. They are all tied to custom facebook fan pages. http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Motocross-Mx-Racing-Dirt-Bike-Supercross-Nationals/168584899840449 www.crf450r.com www.crf250r.com www.rmz450.com www.yz450f.com www.kx450f.com I could use the fans in fact to complete some things I want to do with them.

Yep - you have to be carefull and no matter where the buyer is from. I would always call in the check to make sure its all good as well. In another business I was involved in we were given a check for $8K from a West Uni** branch from a supposedly "licensed" dealer in Illinois. I called the check in to West Uni** and they verified it was a legit check. Unfortunately 4 weeks later the bank returned it as it was one of 120 checks that were stolen out of a branch office and not reported. $8,000! We about filpped to say the least. I had all the guys details, copies of his license, retail cert, business license and everything and it was all fake. Long story short I managed to track the son of a b**** down and he was arrested along with several others and it turned out this was a big theft ring responsible for millions of stolen property through Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. Got to pick him out of a line up and everything :)

With regard to it being too scary for kids my 9 and 10 year old loved it.... my 5 year old fell asleep and woke up during a certain scene with a snake which startled her a bit :)
-
We went to see it this afternoon too... I thought it was pretty good! If you haven't watched the others though it would be easy to fall asleep :)
-
There ya go...... :) That changes the dynamics a little over just seeing the movie for a second time. Too Hogwarts it is :)

OMG it's like a $60 event for my family to go ONCE! No way am I seeing it twice. I've been called a cheap a$$ a time or two though........ :)

Congrads Adrian... :) Lost my ring about a week after we returned from the honeymoon and a worker found it when he swept up the shop. Never realized it fell off even! Haven't lost it since in the last 13 years thankfully.

First time in 14 years...
Greg R posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
that I have ever had a crew stopped by code enforcement to see if we had a permit to stain a fence :2eyes:. It happened today in a small town about 20 minutes away. The guys are unloading equipment to ready the staining process and Barney fife shows up asking if we were licensed, bonded and had a permit for the job. My employees tells him yes were licensed and bonded but no permit that he knows of. Appearently they've adapted a rule here in this little town that ANY job over $500 requires a permit no matter what the work. So me being a bit of a smart ass asks..... so if I hire a to z landscaping to overseed my lawn for $501.00 I need a permit? He stated YES anything over $500. Anybody else deal with this crap????? I've never heard such a thing and I thought there was a reason its called a BUILDING PERMIT! -

$50 bucks....... so odds are I'm money WAY ahead by not getting the permits :) -
New Fall Contests at TheWoodPros.com!
Greg R replied to Scott Paul's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ok ok ok.... :) I'm telling ya I've stripped probably 60 behr decks this year and this is one of three that our typical boosted stripper mix wouldn't budge. When the Behr is applied a coat or two thick its no prob..... these decks had 3 and 4 coats on them. I don't care if it's timberstrip, hd80, powersolve or whatever it won't take it off when it's on that heavy even with the glycol. ..... and I know ALL ABOUT two tones. They're a real pain in the a$$$$$$$$$$:) -

Yes please do .... you have no idea how hard it was to strip that BEHR off the top of that deck much less the WHOLE UNDERSIDE as well :) Haha.... :) Looks like Ken has a leg up so far -

Hey Ron - it's only $30 for the permit and it applies to any project $500 and up. It would only be beneficial if they enforce it across the board. Otherwise its just a pain in the neck :) -

According to "Barney" we even need a permit to pressure wash there. Also if you claim the job is under $500 they can request a copy of the invoice. This is just a small town looking for money anywhere they can find it...... ... and for some reason that doesn't suprise me about California :) -

We have to bonded within the counties we work in to be able to get a contractors license for the towns and cities we work in. Sadly each city requires you to be licensed which amounts to about a $100 a pop (about $4K a year in licensing). By the time I pay my GL/Biz Auto policy, Workers comp and licensing fees I swear its July before I start to turn a profit.... and they wonder why 9 out of 10 businesses fail each year
