help on guns n' lances
One Tough Pressure replied to Barry M's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
You will only need insulated if you run a hot machine. No sense in lugging around the extra weight if you are running cold only. If you plan to x-jet then no sense in lugging around the dual lance either. The gun and hose should be rated a minimum of what you machine is putting out. Some hoses are marked and some are not. All guns I have seen are marked and Giant is a decent company, so i would feel confident that they have it marked. I like the Suttner ST-601 guns. They are a straight thru gun and mighty durable. I use it for everything, x-jet, lance, dual lance, and surface cleaner. I am also a fan of the Giant 21290c guns, but they just sit in the tool box now. I keep them handy as back ups and loaners. Did you get your unit locally? If so, then go back there and get the gun that is rated correctly for your machine. -
I have not used these on a pressure wash rig, but have used them in carpet cleaning. The pressure was much, much less on the carpet machines, but they were disconnected while under pressure. Like an air compressor they will pop apart from the pressure when you pull the collar back. That little nipple on the plug, when mated with the quick coupler will allow the water to flow. Anyway, the mention of these type of qc's was just to say they do exist, but if you try them, be cautious. I can not guarantee that they are designed for high psi. Then mention of air compressors is just for comparison, so please do not use try and use those qc's on a washer.

Actually there are q/c's that stop water and they are generally found on carpet cleaners. I do not know the true name, but they do exist. Hansen is one of many that make them. In my set up however it is the gun that stops the flow. I have yet to try the other ones for a pressure wash set up.

Whisper wash seem to always have the gum attached to the surfacer, where Steel Eagle just has a 1/4" pipe. If you have a gun attached to your surfacer, you will either have to modify the set up or use the ball valve to save trips to the machine.
-
Depends on who you talk to. ESpec says to run the water thru the plug into the qc, but I fail to see how it can matter when the plug is crammed against the o-ring anyway. I will keep mine as shown above, as it works very well for me.

Tim, Welcome to The Grime Scene, always glad to see another Californian. You can and it will work, but if you plan to do this for customers then you will want to fine tune it at home first. It is not just about the pressure, but the gpm as well. You do not want to flood the carpet even with a super suction vacuum it will take forever to dry. Truck Mount carpet cleaners generally use 500 psi and below, and 1 gpm and below. You will have to bypass water on the hi pressure side of the pump. Depending how you do this, the burner may sense the flow and always be on which is a very bad thing. The other way it may not get enough flow and the burner will not come on at all. I clean my carpets at home with my skid unit dialed down quite a bit. I would not attempt to go out and cean carpets as a business. I could play with it a bit more and maybe perfect it, but that is not the market I want to get.

Man I just love being a um, Jeff Foxworthy Fan
One Tough Pressure replied to Jon's question in The Club House
I don't hear his stuff very often but it is funny. -
Here is a picture of a gun. All mine are setup this way. Ball valves add extra weight, get scraped up dragging on the ground, and fail at the worst time.

Contact your local water company. They will have the prices for you. According to Delcos info, the average price of 1000 gallons averages varies between .50 cents and $5.00. Much cheaper for them if you use their water.
-
I have a qc on the end of my gun and the surface cleaner and wands have plugs. I can switch between them as often as needed without shutting down or closing a ball valve to change guns.

using a 55 gal barrell for a water tank
One Tough Pressure replied to desi's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
You can buy and install a flange and lid to make access to that drum like any normal tank. Then you can install a float valve. What kind of machine do you have, and where will the drum be in relation to the machine? Pumps have a 1/2" intake, and a 1.5" hose is just way to much. You will be fine with 1" and you need that drum higher as it needs to allow gravity to get that water to the pump. I recall you had a direct drive unit, and that will need to be flooded on the intake as they do not pull water as well as a belt drive. -
You can run hot water thru the pump, but it is not advisable long term as it will do damage. This Rinnai unit that you speak of must be able to handle high pressure from the pump or it is useless.
-
The water is heated with the diesel fuel. The power whether it be 12 volt, 115 v or 240 volt is for the fan and the blower. The water goes thru your machine like normal and then into the hot box. You may try and get in touch with Robert aka Bart from North Side Services in Brisbane. He may know some local places that can help you out. http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&userid=615

Moving from Residential to Commerical...
One Tough Pressure replied to svp07's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Recovery applies to all work when the water will reach a storm drain. Some areas do not enforce as much as others, but the law is on the books and they can start anytime. Having hot water will make a big difference with commercial work. Commercial is very competitive in most areas and without hot, you may not get far. Prices also drop when comparing commercial to residential. -
Turbo Nozzles

You may want to get one, since you probably do not have a surface cleaner. It would come in handy a bit more for you. Not sure what shipping is your place but a nozzle can be had for aeound $25.00. There are a few other guys from Australia on the boards, I know one is from the Brisbane area. Bart where are you? but not sure where exactly others are from. -
Ryan, While you may be one to check out something, many folks figure that if they are given something by their employer it is safe. Many have never heard of an MSDS. Many companies do not want you to know what is in something, either for privacy reasons or because of possible side effects. I feel for this guy, this really sucks, and he is lucky to be alive. I see no blame on his part as he was in the scope of his duties with the chems, and the truck at home. Had he snuck some chems out to use at home, or had the truck there without company permission, then that would be another story. I hope his employer pays dearly for this.

McQuillan walked into a bar and ordered martini after martini, each time removing the olives and placing them in a jar. When the jar was filled with olives and all the drinks consumed, the Irishman started to leave. "S'cuse me", said a customer, who was puzzled over what McQuillan had done, "what was that all about?" "Nothin', said the Irishman, "my wife just sent me out for a jar of olives!" ***************************************************** "Water to Wine" An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?" "Just water," says the priest. The trooper says, "Then why do I smell wine?" The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good Lord! He's done it again!" *********************************************** "The Brothel" Two Irishmen were sitting at a pub having beer and watching the brothel across the street. They saw a Baptist minister walk into the brothel, and one of them said, "Aye, 'tis a shame to see a man of the cloth goin' bad." Then they saw a rabbi enter the brothel, and the other Irishman said, "Aye, 'tis a shame to see that the Jews are fallin' victim to temptation as well." Then they see a catholic priest enter the brothel, and one of the Irishmen said, "What a terrible pity...one of the girls must be dying. ************************************* Irish Cemetery Three Irishmen, Paddy, Sean and Seamus, were stumbling home from the pub late one night and found themselves on the road which led past the old graveyard.. "Come have a look over here," says Paddy, "It's Michael O'Grady's grave, God bless his soul. He lived to the ripe old age of 87." "That's nothing," says Sean, "here's one named Patrick O'Toole, it says here that he was 95 when he died."! Just then, Seamus yells out, "Good God, here's a fella that got to be 145!" "What was his name?" asks Paddy. Seamus stumbles around a bit, awkwardly lights a match to see what else is written on the stone marker, and exclaims, "Miles, from Dublin." *************************************************** Irish Predicament Drunk Ole Mulvihill (From the Northern Irish Clan) staggers into a Catholic Church, enters a confessional box, sits down but says nothing. The Priest coughs a few times to get his attention but the Ole just sits there. Finally, the Priest pounds three times on the wall. The drunk mumbles, "ain't no use knockin, there's no paper on this side either." *************************************************** Irish Last Request Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady's after his Sunday morning service, and she's in tears. He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?" She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night." The priest says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Tell me, did he have any last requests?" She says, "That he did, Father..." The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary?" She says, "He said, 'Please Mary, put down that damn gun!' ************************************************* Happy St. Patrick's Day!

For any newbies out there that do not know, Ken is only joking here. -
Dropping the Dime on your Competition.
One Tough Pressure replied to Degraffreed's question in The Club House
There was a guy on PWN that posted pics of illegal discharges that he took from his backyard, over the wall with a telephoto lense. He like to brag that he was turning all these people in and probably never considered that one of these folks who he snapped pictures of may read that board. He was a very active poster and poof, one day he was gone, hasn't even visited the the bbs in quite a while. I still wonder if one of his pictures caught up with him. I see it this way, I do recovery and sell that in my bids. I see people all the time not recovering and getting away with it, but I do not have the time or the energy to turn them in. It pisses me off that these hacks get away with less than average equipment, and letting the water run off, but I am in the cleaning business, not the enforcement business. I do make sales calls and mention recovery at these locations so that they may just get bumped, but turning them in is not my job. -
Turbo Nozzles
One Tough Pressure replied to Wallydog's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
No you do not need a turbo nozzle, many that own them rarely use them including myself. I use mine for stripping paint, or etching concrete for paint prep. They can be found in many internet stores as well as local hardware stores, however if ACT, is Australian Capital Territory, then you may have a little harder time finding one. -
I'd Call this an Eye Catching Paint Job!
One Tough Pressure replied to Lou Beach's question in The Club House
Nice looking rig. Here is the link for ebay. Lou, It is best to save the picture to your computer and then post rather than trying to copy and paste. Aside from people getting finicky with their bandwidth, it keeps the picture here, when the other site eventually deletes it. -
Guns are the same as many other things. If they are not owned responsibly, it can hurt or kill someone. Guns like many other things do not do the act itself, without someone operating it. Banning guns is not the answer, strict screening of the people who buy them is. Sure people will get them illegally, but people steal cars and kill with them to, so should they ban automobiles as well? Simple thing is be responsible.

I have a favorite local place, but for the more known chains, we like Roundtable and Toppers.
