Residential customer is grilling me about chemicals
Douglas Hicks replied to MaineWindowCleaning's question in Residential Pressure Washing
The last time I was asked what chemicals and processes I used, my reply was "That is proprietary information that I do not share." They either do not trust you, or they want to make sure you are not making too much money, or your competitor is telling that you use chemicals that will cause their children to be born with 3 eyes. If you wait long enough, most chems will disolve -
Estimates - how do you handle them?
Douglas Hicks replied to Beth n Rod's question in Residential Pressure Washing
In the building trades, charging for estimates is becoming more common. -
On GP we have seen Mbryan's pictures show up worldwide. Sometimes people would call the offender and ask about the pictures. Often the story was the web designer made the whole site and the designer was responsible for the use of the pictures. Sometimes the offender took the pictures down and sometimes it took a few more calls to get changes made. Using pictures w/o permission is theft, nothing less. But to steal the whole design is blatent theft.

Your dealer did not have this set-up and instruct you on the operation? Have you gone on-line in your search for a manual? -
Job Lead for St. Augustine, FL 32084 Bidding ENDS SOON!
Douglas Hicks replied to extremeclean's topic in Contractor Help Wanted - Job Leads
A fine example of the elite, and the disrespect they show for those who work with there hands. Obviously, there was no effort to talk to anyone in the trade before writing that set of specs. -
Yes, working out of town, again. Our Valentine's day job is 400 miles and 7 hours away. Maybe Matt would like a card and box of choclates. But, I do have a card for Dee, before we leave tomorrow.

I spoke too soon. I got on PWN, finally, after several tries, now I am locked out again. Computers are wonderful, when everything works. When there is a problem, I am lost.

I used to use a plastic 55 gallon barrer. Cheap and easy to add the float valve, and the outlet piping. Now I use a small 20 gallon tank mounted on a stand that allows plenty of fall to the pump and to the drain. My cost less than $100.00 from an RV place.

PWN has upgraded to ??????????????
Douglas Hicks replied to Douglas Hicks's question in The Club House
Thank you for the response, tried again yesterday and again a few minutes ago. Still the same results. -
I'm sure we can all relate to most or all of these.

HACKSAW: strength of everything you forgot to disconnect. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but, can also be used, as the nameimplies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms. PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part. HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, What is a "vinyl record"? -
Rule of thumb, If you are getting 80% of the jobs you estimte, you are too cheap. If you get 50% of the jobs you are about right on pricing. You should make a form for some of your jobs. Include set-up time, working time, clean-up time, drive time and material used = a cost figure. Sale - cost = profit. Add non-productive time, ordering materail, equip repair, billing, sales calls, non-paying customers, and subtract from what you thought the profit was. You might make more if you got a paper route. A couple of years ago, I was not making enough. I raised our prices, over 100% in some cases. I added a service charge. We lost less than 10 customers. Read Beth's response, sounds like you are not charging enough money. Is this your only source of income?

2011 Resolutions......Are you brave enough?
Douglas Hicks replied to Celeste's question in The Club House
I will try not to call out those who claim to be NFPA Certified, when NFPA does not and and never has certified people, processes or material. http://www.mrfiresafety.us/ Whooops, failed already. -
What is your favorite thing about the Holidays?
Douglas Hicks replied to Beth n Rod's question in The Club House
We used to take the kids to a shopping mall to see Santa. this was the real Santa, real whiskers, real leather belt, real leather boots, none of that plastic stuff. Jayme was getting to the age she questioned Santa Claus, & she did not want to sit on Santa's lap. My wife told Jayme to ask Santa if he knew Grandpa Russell. With a smirk, Jayme sat on Santa's lap and asked, "Do you know my Grandpa Russell?" Santa looked at my little girl and asked, "Does he live in Apple Valley?" Jayme looked at Santa and replied "Yes, not far from the School." Santa said "Of course, I have a summmer place not far from there, I have known Frank for many years." She got off Santa's lap, ran to us and told us that Santa knew Grandpa Russell. Made a believer of that little girl for a couple more years. Little did she know that her mother and Santa's son went to school together. Jayme has a daughter of her own, & I have told her that story several times. I am sure in a few years, I wll tell my daughter's grand children the same story. -
reasonable price to rebuild cat pump
Douglas Hicks replied to steveh's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Teh last couple of times I found it was cheaper to buy a new pump. I run a TS 2021. I tried an Anno Reverbi. I was supposed to be cheaper. It cost more because it did not hold up near as well as the TS 2021. This advice is worth exactly what you paid for. -
You might not want to expose your customers to your requirement. And, no pictures please.

There is this book http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/3/erg-gmu/erg/ergmenu.aspx which is found in fire trucks, ambulances, & police cars. I entered Sodium Hydroxide in the search box, clicked enter and found http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/3/erg-gmu/erg/search.aspx. I then clicked on Guide 154, which the form of SH that was spilled when the bucket fell over, and found this http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/3/erg-gmu/erg/guidepage.aspx?guide=154. Guide 154 tells the first responder how to handle that particular chemicle in that particular form. Notice it tells the first responder how to handle spills, & fires. I got my hard copy when I was Asstant chief/training officer of a small rural FD. You might be able to get a copy from the local FD, PD, DOT. Or you can print out only what you need based upon what chems you use. Then is can be put in your haz mat book. You can also put that above the wall above your haz mat storage. Yes Adrian, the fuel I was peaking of does not include the vehicle fuel. And when I need more writing surface, I turn the page. Have you thought of just turning the other cheek, so to speak, to expose more writing surface?
-
Don't forget fuel, it is hazardous. And for those who haul this haz mat

Paint cans left outside can be a problem
Douglas Hicks replied to RSuds's topic in Chemicals & Safety
What smelled, the dirt? Or this whole deal? Did anyone contact you before decisions were made? Who made you the goat? Nothing was found in hte dirt, yet it is still treated as haz mat/ I see body shops that leave paint out as you did. I am told it meets whatever rules are in effect. After the paint is a solid it is not haz mat -
Burner problems
Douglas Hicks replied to aquadreamin's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
you need to be aware the colors may not be what you have. if the whole switch assembly has been replaced, the colors may have been changed. But, you can trace the wires to the control panel. get a couple of micro switches. They are easy to change. Remove the small screws, pull hte cover. pull the microw swithc with a pair of needles nose pliers. Change hte wires, one at time. Put the micro switch in place, making sure teh switch fits over the pegs.Put the cover on. When the changing hte micro switch no longer fixes the problem, replace the whole switch assmebly. the spring, # 7 may break. the shaft # 4 may enlargethe hole in the body # 13. At that point the shaft hangs up and may or may not turn off hte burner or turn on hte burner. if you have a hi-limit switch, replace both switches at he same time. You make more money getting hte job done than playing mechanic. i suspect the real problem you have is that the previous owner did not know how to fix his pw, nor did he know of TGS. Read teh advice of guy B and follow it. You have more problems than the micro-switch. Youhave problems at tehcontrol panel. -
Anything else, open your beer, clean the van, wipe down the pw hoses?

Very well written article. Short, to the point, Specific requirements w/o bashing the low-ball group. I assume that is part of your sales presentation.
