Cleaner Times Magazine wants to know... and needs your help.
Douglas Hicks replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
We are a full service fire prevention/suppression company. We do fire extinguishers, sprinklers, fire alarms, emergency lighting, supression system, exhaust sytem installations. We do something else, yeah, we clean exhaust systems too. -
hundreds of fish died? Sounds like someone is exaggerating a teeny tiny little bit. If I was the attorney for the guys that dumped the acid into the water, I would ask who counted the fish and for photos of the hundreds of dead fish. I would also find out how much acid, if it was acid, was used and contact a fish expert as to the effect of the acid. Then I woild work to reduce the fine. However, the guy is going to pay a fine, and may have an exclusion on his insuance policy. Any bets how much discussion this post generates?

I spoent over 100 hours to get registered, that was with the help of a real nice lady in Battle Creek, MI. I still could not get the registration to work. I finally just cancelled the whole project and told the BLM I would not work for them if I had to use their time-wasting system. I figured the payoff period was about 5 years. Another guvmint block for the small guy.

Time to take the thing to a small engine mechanic. You have your trade, they have their trade. -
Carbon Monoxide nearly kills parking garage cleaner
Douglas Hicks replied to One Tough Pressure's topic in Chemicals & Safety
I got my Red Card while still Ass't Chief/Training Officer for a small rural FD. One of the instructors told of a wildland crew pumping out of a small creek. The crew got sleepy, laid down in the sun and took a nap. An old pogue showed up to check on the crew, found them asllep. He immediatly started yelling, kicking them and throwing rocks. He roused them and got them up the bank into fresh air. The CO had collected in the depression and displaced hte O2. When I took my EMT classes, we were taught that a cherry red face was a sign of CO poisoning. After taking individuals to ER for CO poinsoning, we asked a Doc if he had ever seen the cherry red face, he said not even once. The symptons are lethargy, slow mental responses. the cure is fresh air and O2 if available. -
I bought my Delco vertical PW about 1996, so it has not been used much, I'm only on my 5th or 6th pump, and 2nd coil. I plumbed my duct out the roof, no air gap between the duct and the burner stack. Seems to work fine.

Hot water Pressure washer mount in van
Douglas Hicks replied to ChrisZRX's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
That looks kinda like my van, except mine is wheatland yellow and has a bit of kitchen grease inside and outside so I don't get accused of wearing a skirt. Now that winter is over and summer is here, I might wear a skirt while driving so I can keep cool. On a warm day it smells like a french fry. But sometimes I smell like a french fry. There are some holes in the aluminum floor because of the SH. But it ain't worn out, only 250,000 miles. Sgt Hicks -
Hot water Pressure washer mount in van
Douglas Hicks replied to ChrisZRX's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
I work of a Step Van. Lousy milage but it has the one option only money will buy, it is paid for. I have a Delco vertical mount diesel fire PW. I did cut a hole in the roof and have had no problems, except in the summer the interior of the van gets warm. I open the sliding door, the back doors and the roof vent. I used single wall galvanized duct screwed together. At the roof I used Selkirk wood stove pipe. I had a roof jack made and sealed the jack/roof interface w/silicone. No problems in 13 years. if you use galvanized duct, remember the fumes given off by galvanized pipe are poison. Start the PW and the burner, letting the galvanized fumes escape the first time you use the PW. What do you clean? Are you one of those skirt wearing flat washers? Or are you a real man doing exhaust systems? -
Owners' Manual for the parents of teenaged daughters
Douglas Hicks replied to Russ Johnson's question in The Club House
You don't need more guns, a shovel is good enough. When that pimply faced perverted shows up to get your little girl, make sure your little girl is in her room. Put you arm around the *******'s shoulder. Ask him nicely, if he wants you to dig the hole, or does he want to dig his own grave. -
Answers 1. Check the fuel 2. Check the wire fittings on the Hi-limit switch and the pressure switch. 3. Change the hi-limit switch 4. Change the micro-switch in the pressure switch. I change both because at 1:00 AM, I do not have time to mess with the machine. I always set both changed out switches off to the side, because I am going to check them back at the shop. Of course I never do. If I still have the problem, I check the pin in the pressure switch. Sometimes it will wear and hang up, doing exactly what you describe. Then I change the whole pressure switch and toss the old switch, saving the old micro-switch. It sounds like your problem is hte hi-limit switch.

Sounds as if we have 2 animals with same name. Mud daubers here in Eastern Oregon are wasps, nasty flying things that bite several times and do not pull their guts out like honey bees. They are not protected here, we use the traps to get rid of the nasty biting things. Then there are the other flying mud daubers. They have feathers and like to build nests on sprinkler heads. They are known as swallows. One of my accounts has swallows who like to build nests on the sprinkler heads. This location is a National Park, and they are not allowed to disturb the birds or the nests. So the maintenance man just gets up early in the AM and pressure washes the siding and the sprinkler heads. The maintenance man also has problems with gophers, and snakes, neither of which he is allowed to trap or kill.

Hot Water Problems
Douglas Hicks replied to chavargo's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Is your PW burner fired by gas, diesel, propane, electric or what? Loosen the fuel supply line to make sure you are getting fuel. Keep a fire extinguisher close by. A real fire extinguisher, not one of those POS things with a plastic valve. Make sure it is at least a 5 # ABC. Don't park too close to the house/shop. Is your capitol key stuck? -

Ken fenner's long lost Brother Lance Winlsow
Douglas Hicks replied to John T's question in The Club House
I do remember someone posted links to the actual results of the trial, He was convicted of scams, lying and just screwing people over. His take on the results are not what actually happened. he is not an asset to the PW business. -
You have my sympathy. While we were testing a fire alarm system, I was spraying the smoke detectors. I was asked "What is in that stuff, I feel ill and think I should go home." Then she coughed. I looked at her and told her the chemical was FDA approved for children and animals. She shut up. In another case I heard of, the sprinkler company made arrangements to test and inspect a system. They were going to drain the piping, drill into pipes to inspect the interior of the pipe for corrosion and rust. Notices were posted in the building, tellling workers the slight odor they might detect was harmless and of no concern. The day the work was to be done, the sprinkler company got an emergency call and cancelled the scheduled job. Several people claimed they were ill because of the chemical smell. All request for time off were denied because the work was not done. A few days later the sprinkler contractor performed the job, w/o putting any notices up. No one felt ill, because no one knew the work was being done. So with this dangerous chemical that made this PITA and her drop-kick dog sick, you must be near death yourself and you must have employees dropping dead like flies, right? Do you dispose of the dead employees your self or do you have a deal with the local mortician to double stack the bodies in coffins? Can you send me some of that chemical? I have a list of people who I would like to see eliminated. I can see a chance to expand your business in a whole new direction. Just give the MSD sheets to your contact, remove the brand names. Send a basket of flowers to the PITA, include a brochure and business card from a local funeral home. In fact, maybe you and your competitor should think about a common front on this problem.

Or tap into the van fuel tank w/rubber hoses. Install a 12V pump inline. Use a push button switch to control the pump. Drop the hose into the PW engine tank and filler up.

I do have a bookkeeper come in and do my books. She does payroll, billing, deposits and balances my checkbooks. She gets my taxes ready for the accountant, does depreciation schedules, the whole bit. She works for an accountant, who does not mind her part time work and gives her advice. Last year she was paid about $3,000, and she earned every nickel. She has a key to my Post Office box and my house. She has access to all of my financial info, she just cannot sign checks. She is the most valuable of all of my staff. I absolutly hate doing the books.

I give mine to Sid. He has a small property out of town that he is planting trees and shrubs on. The gophers really like the plastic tubing he has buried for the water supply. Slows the rodent down when they bite into a piece of old double braid.

And the burner stays on why????
Douglas Hicks replied to One Tough Pressure's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
usually the problem is the micro-switch is bad. Change the micro-switch, saving the old switch. If the switch has a soft feel when tripping the switch, it is bad. If it has a nice snap to the action, it may or may not be bad. At 2:00 AM, I do not have time to check the swithc w/a meter. Besides, my meter normally stays in the Sprinter, not the Step Van. The spring can be broken, as you found out. the pin can also wear the groove in the plastic housing, then it may hang up. When it hangs up, the switch may not come on or it may not shut off. Sometimes you may see water in the swithc housing, if so, you definalty have a problem w/the pin. I keep extra micro-switches and complete pressure switches in the parts box. I also keep hi-limit switches in the van and extra terminals. It is easier to change both switches, than take time to trouble shoot. -
I have a step van built on a P32 chassis. Box is tall enough to stand upright in, GVW about 10,200, enough room for a pW, hose reels, trash cans, clamps, plastic, chemical and room left over. The problem is 6-8 mPG. At the price of gas, that eats into the profit. I am going to put hte E250 into service for hood work. Check the want ads, those vans go for $1,000 used.

Double Gulp type chemical injectors. Anyone tried these?
Douglas Hicks replied to POWERMEN INC's question in Residential Pressure Washing
E-spec, I still remember 15 years ago I bought from E-spec. I use Delco for most of my stuff. Delco may be more expensive, but the customer service is top quality. Wasn't there just a post about "Hypocrites" and how cheap was not always the best price? -
As a rough estimate of weight, figure for the liqueds similar to water, 9 # per gallon. Do you have to move these 135 # + containers by hand?
