I am talking a straight shot from 2001 to 2010. Tell us how you started professional
Douglas Hicks replied to Jim Gamble's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Me, I am guilty. I am old like Scott and have been at it for 33 years. Many of those years on less then 5 hours sleep per night, and too many of 2 hours or less. That would be a good poll, "How many hours of sleep per night/day. " That and "How many hours per day/week do you put in at your business" -

PWNA/UAMCC Press Release
Douglas Hicks replied to PWNA HQ's topic in PWNA News, Events, and Information
Top of Page 3, rewards for those PW'ers who comply w/the regs. Free air miles? Over time, we will see 2 options for PW'ers. Be proactive and get involved in your local/state about these regs or just complain. For those who complain, you have 2 options, try to go under the radar and find out how expensive that can be, or comply with something you chose to not be involved in. What UMACC and PWNA have done may not have been handled as well as it could have been, but what happended has happened, it is time to move on. Be part of the solution or not, your choice. -
Dead Beat or slow pay customers...How do you deal with them?
Douglas Hicks replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
We did a hurry-up job just before Super Bowl, which was the Grand Opening. My guys did get a check, but first it bounced and then the ******* closed the account. He did not return calls and was never in. So, I stopped in for a personal visit. I got the usual run-around, business took more than I thought to get started, business is slow. The third stop, I did not go in his office, but told him in front of his employees that I needed to get paid for the work we did. I got some money. It took me 7 months to collect $900.00, interest was added each month at 1.75%. The last trip, he asked when I was going to clean the hood and service the fire system. Shame on me, I lied when I told him I would check my schedule. I did however, write the insurance agent a letter. I told them I would not be serviceing the life and safety equipment because of non-payment. A couple of weeks ago, I went top the local golf club. When I left, I had all of the fire extinguisehrs that I had not been paid for. One of the extinguishers was behind the bar, as I took the extinguihsers, I told the bar tender and his customer that the extinguisher had never been paid for and still belonged to me. Soon I got a phone call wanting to know where their extinguishers were. I told him my extinguishsers had never been paid for and his account was now taken care of. He claimed he had never received any billing. He said if I would bring the extinguishers back, he would pay me. That is when I got upset and said something that sounded like chinese and suggested he commit a physically impossible act. -

I am getting phone calls from 904.421.8780, based in Jacksonville, FLA. Can anyone in that area look to see who that is that keeps calling me, & then hanging up?

phne calls from Jacksonville, FLA
Douglas Hicks replied to Douglas Hicks's question in The Club House
Thank you David. I think they are calling my office number, which transfers callers directly to my cell phone. But they must be ussing a computer generated calling program. Some of the computer generated phone call programs interpret the transfer as going to an answering machine, which shuts off the phone call. Tommolrrow I will call them on a published number. -

3/8 hose vs 1/2 inch test
Douglas Hicks replied to RSuds's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
In the fire service, we figured an inch and three/quarter hose put out twice the GPM as a inch and half hose. If the amount of water is important to your work, the larger hose may be the best buy. -
How often do you use hot water on residential jobs??????????????????????

What is up with sales people not following through in this industry?
Douglas Hicks replied to Neil's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
My purchases from Bob have been very small, but the service was great! My PW came from Delco/Delux several years ago. The service, with one exception has been great. After 2 orders placed with Jerry, I no longer talked to him. If I am in a hurry, the orders are expedited, and shipping information has been accurate. E-spec sucks. If the owner reads this, I will get flamed again and told I never oredered from them. His memory is not as long as mine, after 20+_ years, I still remember the crap was substandard, the warrenty was non-existant and the service was lacking. -

Where is Lake Stevens? Seattle area? Remember this moment, as you become more successful, you will have less time to get new accounts and will be hard pressed to take care of the existing accounts. -

Douglas Hicks replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Oregon is an "at will" State. terminate anyone for any reason or no reason. the employer has 24 hours to pay the employee. Quit for any reason or no reason. Former employee has to wait until the next regular payday for a check. -

At one time I knew a fleet washer in Boise who used a 12V fuel pump to fill his PW fuel tank. He used a push button switch to operate the fuel pump.

Douglas Hicks replied to metcalfec's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
And the hose to pw gun and gunn to wand. The only place the 22mm connectors are not used is at the end of the wand. At the end of the wand I use the standard QC for the tips. -
