Wood Defender Re-Stain Questions

Question

I have a customer who has an 3 year old existing cedar pergola stained with Behr and now wants to stain with WD. I am familiar with WD just not when it comes to re-stains. Do I need strip the Behr or can I apply over the Behr? I am leaning to using a brightener to remove it but would like to hear some other thoughts on the subject.

You probably should use a stripper before the brightener. I would spend some time using the search function on strippers and brighteners all the answers are here. I have always learned more by doing the research and then asking questions.

When in doubt and the label doesn't specify otherwise, strip it.

Compatibility is the reason why most manufacturers state that the wood must be clean, free of debris, dust/dirt, oils or any substance that will impede penetration and adhesion.

Rod!~
