linseed oil

I concur with jon and celeste, linseed oil by itself is not intended for outdoor use.

It darkens wood and moisturizes it, but unprotected by a varnish or one of the urathane's will lead to mildew proliferation. Linseed oil which is derived from flaxseed is a natural food for mildew.

There are mildewcides available as additives but these are meant for paint for the most part.

Save your money and buy a premanufactured preservative/oil that is designed for outdoor use.
