roller pump running backward?

Question

I plumbed up a roller pump yesterday.I plumbed it from the tank to the "in" side of the pump,...and plumbed the by-pass and discharge hose to the "out" side of the pump.I am using a gas engine to power it.Problem is,it runs backward in this configuration.I switched the two sides and it pumps fine this way.Questions: Was this pumped stamped wrong? Does a gas engine run different direction than PTO and/or electric? Will running backwards hurt anything? Thanks for any input.

Not sure I understand how you are powering it from the engine. Are you using the engines electrical system or the generator?

Also, what kind of pump is it? Flowjet, shurflo...etc...

Running a pump backwards can put strain of the area of the diaphram and seals not meant to be under pressure.

It's driven off the drive shaft of a small gas-powered engine if it's a traditional roller pump. I'm not sure why it's running backwards unless it's a factory flaw or plumbed incorrectly.

Thanks for the replies,...Jim Carroll you are correct,I did a little more research and found that there are pumps made for PTO,electric and gas.The gas pumps run opposite.I guess I did'nt do enough research beforehand. But I just figured they would all operate the same. They should mark them on the box as to which application they're for.Oh well, lesson learned. Thanks again for the help.
