0 big mike 14 Report post Posted August 25, 2006 I read a thread a while back that claimed Oxalic took the scale deposits off boat hulls real well. Not sure about the barnacles though.
0 Keth 15 Report post Posted August 26, 2006 Most boatyards have a guy pressure wash off the barnacles when the boat is hauled in the fall for winter storage in northern climes. There is a small ring of calcium deposits left where the barnacle was attached to the hull but for a cruising sailboat it usually isn't an issue and they just paint over it the next spring. In Palm Beach, being year round, I imagine you could approach boatyards to offer it but typically they do this themselves with slave labor and most likely wouldn't want you to get a slice of their pie. Racing sailboats are a whole nother story. Scuba divers every week sponging down before race weekends.
0 RyanH 14 Report post Posted August 29, 2006 Years ago my granddad and I scraped the barnacle shells off with a garden hoe or spade then scrubbed the residue with warm vinegar solution and rinsed. I remember this being a rather unpleasant smell to be around and it stuck with you for a few days, which probably explains why my grandmother didn't want us coming home until the end of the week.
