suzuki98 14 Report post Posted May 8, 2007 how do you guys figure out what type of wood you working with. Do you ask the homeowner or figure it out for yourself?
0 Deck Guy 14 Report post Posted May 8, 2007 It can work either way. You should eventually learn to discern a few species/types of wood from experience, so you look like a guy who knows what he's doing.

0 Beth n Rod 1,279 Report post Posted May 9, 2007 Go to a lumber yard, pick out a sample of a bunch of types. Explore the color, weight, density, how easily is scratches, how it responds to chems and sealers, etc. Look at the grain pattern. In my opinion, you should know what wood it is, especially if the homeowner doesn't. Beth :cup:
0 Beth n Rod 1,279 Report post Posted May 9, 2007 It sets a very impressive tone to be able to identify and understand any type of wood commonly found on decks in your area. Knowledge gives you key insights into conditions and problems you may face and whether or not you know them could determine the results you are able to get.
