It can work either way. You should eventually learn to discern a few species/types of wood from experience, so you look like a guy who knows what he's doing.

Go to a lumber yard, pick out a sample of a bunch of types. Explore the color, weight, density, how easily is scratches, how it responds to chems and sealers, etc. Look at the grain pattern. In my opinion, you should know what wood it is, especially if the homeowner doesn't.
