Be prepared to be told you have to use only water, and that you have to reclaim all of it. Beth -
EFC-38 for cleaning
Beth n Rod replied to Tonyg's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We used to use quite a bit of EFC for maintenance cleaning, but it does have pretty decent stripping capabilities, and at times more than we wanted it to. It is not a true percarb... we switched over a year ago... For killing mold or mildew, you need a percarb or as Jim says a very diluted bleach. If you don't want to remove the coating and are planning on just a light maintenance coat of sealer, don't strip it. Beth -
Nicely put John, It's common sense business logic that eludes some consumers and they just need a little education to help them understand the difference. We do it the greek way and add a pinch of guilt by saying that if they hire an non-licensed company, they are helping them to operate illegally. Some will not care and just want to get the lowest price and take the chance. I often ask if they will use the same company each time and the majority say they do. I then ask them if they think that by charging such low fees for work a company could possibly stay in business long enough to provide another round of service. Most agree, under those circumstances they would rather pay more for a solid company than risk the investment in another that won't be around long enough to be accountable for their work. There are many ways to point out the gamble people take with hiring a company that under prices services. Some have even questioned me if our company could possibly be overpriced. My response is: Most certainly! Having to pay the taxes and the various (workmans comp, health, unemployment, vehicular and business) mandatory insurances drives the price up. Add to that the safety training, safety gear and educational material puts another lump on top of that. If I need to, I will go into the usual overhead legitimate companies have such as office expenses, postage, telecommunications, salaries, taxes, business accounting fees, payroll fees, cpa fees, license fees, equipment/vehicle repair and maintenance, fuel and oil, uniforms, laundering, and various other tools and supplies associated with the job execution expenses... There are some that seem to have a better appreciation of our company pricing and we are now on par with others who are priced closer to our bid. Essentially, the low priced company falls out of contention in some cases. It depends on the persons financial situation. If they are really strapped, they may take the chance anyway and go with the low bidder thinking perhaps we have over-inflated our position to justify the pricing. You can't convince all the skeptics. Rod!~

It's fine, I just wanted to ask. As I said another mod reported it, so I thought I would ask in the open. I don't have a problem with it, if I had, I would have pulled it. Is this just for Florida people? Beth

This looks alot like spam, and was reported by another user as such. Any other Mods agree? Beth

FMCSA Says "One Strike And You're OUT"
Beth n Rod replied to StainlessDeal's question in The Club House
I'll admit you guys have my attention on this. Thanks for the heads up. I am calling a bogus on the trooper who ticketed you just for having a sign on a trailer with 2 axles. Unless I am missing something here...such as a non-compliance on what you were carrying (inappropriate containers, not properly secured or the like.) Rod!~ -
Anyone heard of American Deck Products?
Beth n Rod posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ok, so the other day I got some junk email, and since this was relevant I saved it. Has anyone heard of or used American Deck Products in Atlanta Georgia? American Deck Products | Deck Cleaning Products One of the photos I recognize as a very old Wolman photo.... Beth -

FMCSA Says "One Strike And You're OUT"
Beth n Rod replied to StainlessDeal's question in The Club House
Hey Scott, How does this apply to any of us who do not drive a rig? Our company for example has a pickup truck and a van which under D.O.T. standards are not necessarily in their regulatory scope. While it is true we do carry hazmat in small amounts enough to perform the days work assignments, I am interested in knowing whether or not the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is about to increase that scope and start including these types of vehicles? While the vehicles are obviously outfitted for commercial applications although residential in appointment, I am wondering if there is some clause that I may not know about which could affect our company. Should we be supporting new startups?
Beth n Rod replied to plainpainter's topic in Business Topics & Tips
I can really appreciate Scott Thompsons post because it provides a perspective that many of us forget. We were all newbies at one time and I am sure that the threat we all perceive is that information is so much more readily available than when we first started (10 years ago for us as an example) that getting started is probably easier now than it was then. Although information is not available in a structured learning environment, what can be derived by an eager start up is quite amazing. I agree with Scott Stone that pricing is a subject I do not like to discuss. I can give example formulas and provide an insight where all that is necessary is to plug in actual figures unique to the individuals business and they have something to work with. Frankly, I would like to see someone succeed rather than fail because the damage left behind by someone who does fail is an image of our industry that is hard to overcome. People begin to think of us in unfavorable ways because of some (not all) novice and often unscrupulous companies and we have to work harder to change their perception. There is an attrition rate and those who survive will become a competitor. In some areas, there is not enough work to go around and having another competitor means less money for the one already established. Does this mean we should not educate? No, I don't think so because these companies will learn to diversify and offer other services to make up the difference. We see it a great deal as it is. I myself have made some comments about "lowballers" in the past and you know what? It was based upon my mindset at the time and perhaps how I got beat by one and I know that they don't provide the quality of service we do but what can I do? I move on and wait for that one to call me in a year or two to take up where the other left off. Does that excuse me for the derogatory statement? No. My appolgies to those who may have taken offense. My bad day should not be their label. Rod!~ -
Rod and I wish you the very best Scott, we thank you for all you have done. You're aces! Beth

Reclaiming water from siding
Beth n Rod replied to tcpmLLC's question in Residential Pressure Washing
While there is chlorine in some form in many house wash mixes, it should be only a fraction of what is put up on siding. (1/3-1/4 gal per 5 gallon bucket.) At a ratio of 3:1 that means that your solution will be diluted 300% for use on siding. Roofs are another animal and I will not engage in that discussion as we do not provide this service. Rod!~ -
I can't believe this!
Beth n Rod replied to kcpowerclean's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Which side is the oil fill plug on? Top or Bottom? There are 2 access plugs but one has a finger tightened plastic plug while the other is a metal plug. The position of the barb is of no consequence as it is activated by ventury effect. The length of hose you are capable of using with this injector is determined by the proportioning orifice of the barb itself. Some injectors are limited and will only supply chemical to an average of 25' of hose. If you have an additional line on it, make sure the I.D. is the same and has no air leaks as this will kill the ventury effect. It should be connected with an inline barb and clamped tight. The pressure regulator in some models will only function properly in the upright position. I would definitely put a pressure guage on it to see if it is functioning correctly. Rod!~ -
Thanks for sharing that John. :) What a nice read over coffee.... :cup: Beth

Can't remove belt wheel
Beth n Rod replied to gregative's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Sometimes the key that holds the pulley in place can get bent from the torque of the engine vs the pumps capacity. You will need a pulley puller. You can pick one up at most auto parts stores for around $50.00 or less. Pulley Puller and Installer Set from Overstock.com Rod!~ -

This thread is in honor of Rick and all the other woodies who hang out here. You asked for a debate thread, make it happen! What's the worst thing you could to do wood, or have seen done to wood, or even ever did as a rookie to wood? Beth -

Actually, been there and done that Dave. It worked really well and cut my job time by 80% on a huge deck floor. The wood was Ipe' and did not have any adverse effects. Although I do not recommend it on softer woods, I just thought I would share that little tidbit. Rod!~ -

Adrian, A lien also shows up on your credit report. I believe you can also file a credit report with any of the bureaus after 3 months of non-payment to create a credit history. I''d check into it since this person does not care about your business, why not return the favor? Rod!~
