This was the biggest event I have seen since 2004's joint IWCA/PWNA convention in Dallas/Ft.Worth. Great job to Thad and all his staff along with the WCRA and their team. It was a great event and we enjoyed it. Rod

Suggestions to get rid of dirt/stains on PT from joists
Beth n Rod replied to tomsteve's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Sanding after washing would be a likely result. These stains have been created by dirt as well which if anyone has seen planter rings on decks can be difficult if not impossible to remove. The minerals catalyze in the wood to begin degradation of the wood fibers and discolor them permanently. Rod -
We did one cornflower blue aluminum sided house and while the house for the most part looked quite fine, there was a section just beyond the deck where it looked like someone had thrown some kind of liquid on that side and it looks darker than the rest. The customer tried to blame us for it but we assured them we could not create that effect with our cleaners. We rewashed the siding and brushed it to ensure we got every bit cleaned but when it dried, the splash effect was still there. They tried to tell us that it wasn't there before despite the oxidation present which hid the effect till we washed it. Nothing could be done to change it and that was that. We concluded that someone had to have thrown something on the siding and created the condition long before us. Rod

stripping acrylics and solids
Beth n Rod replied to Aqua Pro's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Most of the oil based stain products for Ipe require a mildewcide. As Rick pointed out, linseed is a natural food for mold and will proliferate wildly on surfaces it is applied to. One clear indicator is that the mold grows all the way up the rails and undersides where applied. Normally, mold only grows in the 'splash' zones of the rails at the first 6"-10" from the bottom. Roof wash additive is a product to help with the capabilities of bleach. We use it in our housewash mix for removing algae without having to make the bleach so strong it won't rinse well. 633-add is the product you need to strip acrylics along with a primary stripper like HD-80. Rod -

That should have been a 2 hour job. What cleaners did you use on it? Get an X-Jet, M-5. Learn what blend (and why) to make a good house washing solution. DO keep an extension, and also a lightweight aluminum lance to connect to the gun with the X-Jet on the other end, for extra throw distance so you can remain on the ground. Keep a soft bristled truck washing brush.....just in case. Maybe Rod will also chime in.... Beth -

633-add is an alcohol additive that expands the range of reactivity of sodium hydroxide. Sort of like going from dialup to broadband. Meanwhile, Rick beat me to helping you out but let us know if you have any more questions. Rod -
Tax Topics / Collecting taxes on wash jobs
Beth n Rod replied to onaprwl's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Where you are and the type of service you perform will dictate what you need to do. The very best advice I can give you, is to consult with your accountant. He or she should be able to tell you if you need to collect tax or not based upon your services. Also your state's website should have some of that information, and it will be more accurate than what you will find here. Beth -
You may find a stiff bristle brush will be needed on areas like window sills and trim. Depending upon the age and condition some areas of spotting may originate beneath the surface and are from the mesh installed beneath. Other areas you will have trouble with are the grey streaks at the corners of windows with aluminum facing. The aluminum oxide rust is able to be removed with an acid like oxalic. There is a problem getting these stains out. 1st is is can alter the color of the stucco. 2nd can also cause the stucco to begin to spalding or deteriorate. Prewet before applying acid and brush the area to remove the stain and immediately rinse. Rod

One note.....that stain looks pretty intact. If you have a helper, great. You might want to pick up a stiff bristled deck brush. After a proper dwell, a scrubbing helps to break the bond....it really does. Beth -

Actually, Hd-80 with a little bleach will work better. Looks like pitch stains. 633-add is an alcohol based additive for stripping. Overkill in this instance. Rod
