Jeff, I had to add some spaces to make paragraphs for readability so I did it in a quote rather than editing your post. You have made some very sensible posts in the past and I just wanted to be able to read what you had to say. Now that I have had the chance to read it I like what you are trying to convey. In a perfect home lot situation anyone would be able to do what you are stating above. However, just for consideration, there are a considerable amount of homes whose landscaping, terrain and proximity to other dwellings would make ladder use virtually impossible if not dangerous for not only set up but ascension as well. Not to mention the number of homes with multilevel roofs with siding above them which only complicate the use of ladders or walking on them once a slippery cleaning solution is introduced. In our area there are a majority of homes that are built on ridges of hills and the front is normally level with a second story. But, as you go around the sides toward the back, the land begins to drop with grades as steep as 12% which makes setting up a ladder an OSHA violation to begin with without a roofing harness for fall protection. This adds a second difficulty factor as the tops of the peaks of the roofs can be as much as 3 and a half stories depending on the grade and the slope of the roof is literally un-walkable in order to reach a point where one can install an anchor for the fall protection harness to attach to. The amount of time necessary to install and remove all of the necessary fall protection devices plus the cleat installation which means drilling holes in the roofs and caulking afterwards to seal the holes can take a couple of hours alone. This adds an uncertainty factor into the equation of the homeowner being nervous about their roof leaking in the future, the possibility of a person falling off of their home and whether or not that person knows what they are doing to begin with. The costs you have mentioned are not bad but with all the extra time considered in the OSHA compliant measures, the insurance costs for workers traversing roofs is considerably higher. Unless one has a company that washes houses as a majority of their services provided, the costs would not be justifiable. I am not debating what you have posted but pointing out that your method may not be feasible for all contractors to employ and perhaps this will provide some insight for you to consider in future posts that could help others who would like to try your method to deal with the situations and conditions I have brought to light here. I grew up in a very Republican household. I have voted both Republican and Democrat in my lifetime. No one in my family is planning to vote republican this time. I know more people who are changing and swinging left than sticking right. Some areas are not as bad off as others in the US that may be true. I live in Germantown MD. You know what that means right now? We live in the part of MD that leads our state in forclosures!!! Do you have any idea what it is like to have dozens of mailer cards come back marked VACANT?! To see the family across the street just move out after the house has sat on the market for OVER A YEAR. Our neighbor is the city of Gaithersburg and guess what folks that's the #2 area for forclosures. Isn't that wonderful for our service area? I could go on and on. GObama! Beth

We fly the flag here on National Holidays. But I don't wear flag jewelry. I am a very proud American with roots to our founders. I'm moved by our anthems and fireworks displays. I remember our fallen soldiers and have visited monuments with friends who have lost loved ones. And at my daughter's middle school graduation I forgot to put my hand over my heart until about half way through the anthem...why...I was preoccupied and caught up in the occasion since my son had also graduated High School that day. Oh well. I really don't think I'm unpatriotic because of that. It is what it is. Beth

If you go back and look it describes the planes in general, and McCain's has no flag either. It says many politicians have it reflect the campaign (and logo I guess). A pin is jewelry. I don't wear one to be thought of as patriotic either - Patriotism lives in my heart. If you look at the hand over heart page it also show him in photos WITH his hand over his heart. I think if you want to see something in some you don't like, you can find a way to do it. Beth

The problem with the unit you have pictured above and removing a urethane is that it (the coating) will clog the paper quickly. I suggest a drum sander first to remove the material and then come back with this unit to smooth things out. You may also need an edger unit or if you have one available; a grinder 7" variable speed to do the edge work. On ipe, be careful not to burnish the wood as the heat from the sanders can draw out the extractives and cause them to form an impermeable barrier which in short means the finish will not penetrate into the wood. Drum sand with 36 grit to get to the bare wood, then, square sander with next higher grit available to smooth out any drum sander path/grit marks. Yes, to do it right, you will need both machines. Each has a purpose and by utilizing them both, you will be able to get the best result quicker which maximizes efficiency and provides the potential to make a better buck at the same time.
