First Complaint of the season
Beth n Rod replied to plainpainter's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Daniel, Next time, make sure you specify what your service will do in order to avoid any expectation beyond that. Ex; Removes mildew and algae Artillery/shotgun fungus will not be affected by this process. Oxidation, Sap removal extra These help to keep the customer in line and you from making unnecessary trips to attend to anything that can fall under the scope of the service. Call backs can be an opportunity but there are times when the customer is just being a bit too picky about something. I look at it this way, if they don't maintain it on a regular basis, they have no right to complain because the problem got to a point that may not be reversible. That is neglect. You are not responsible for that, but you are responsible for setting the expectations so that you can avoid that call back in the first place. Be specific about what you will perform and perform what you proposed. It takes additional time explaining upfront but is saves a great deal when you meet the expectations you have set. Rod!~ -

Correct Deckster Set-Up Procedure @ Jobsite?
Beth n Rod replied to fireandrain's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
If you haven't changed the original configuration, then I would recommend checking the valves inside the primer bulb. Sometimes, these stick and will not allow the pump to prime correctly. If it is getting old and hard to squeeze, replacement would be the best recommendation. Rod!~ -
Correct Deckster Set-Up Procedure @ Jobsite?
Beth n Rod replied to fireandrain's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
1. check your filter. make sure there is no debris. 2. when the switch is vertical, that's bypass. squeeze the bulb a couple, may be 3 or 4 times depending... 3. THEN pull the switch down to the horizontal position. That should do it. From time to time check your hoses and stuff to make sure there is no build up or debris in them. Beth :cup: :groovy3: -
First Woodtux Results of '08
Beth n Rod replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It looks like I would expect after doing that type of application myself. The color is not as rich as it would be otherwise applied to a dry surface instead. So, as far as faded, no, it just doesn't have as much color. Nice pic. Thanks for posting it. Rod!~ -
What is it called?
Beth n Rod replied to PressureX's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
You need to wash it, diluted stripper would do the trick, then neutralize it. Then seal it or not as you see fit. An acid bath alone will not ( I don't think) remove the green, and will add to the silver. If it is pressure treatment, you need to draw it out of the wood, thus the stripper. If it is mineral staining, same thing. If you want nice looking wood, 2 step the fence. Beth -

Beth n Rod replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Daniel, The pigments are bleached out and eroded by uv exposure. This is a success if one could call it that for this type of wood. Most products by this time have long since vanished and the wood would begin turning gray. Rod!~ -
What is it called?
Beth n Rod replied to PressureX's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
What kind of chemicals are in your tap water? Whatever they are, are interacting with the pressure treatment in the wood and causing a chemical reaction. The white part is uv bleaching. Rod!~ -

Beth n Rod replied to PressureX's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Refeed the wood? You mean seal it.... Look, if that is from the pressure treatment, cleaning will help over time...if it is at the bottom, it could be splash up, from rain or a sprinkler take your pick. Also I would two step the cleaning, don't just hit it with acid, that's not the whole process..... Beth p.s. I've seen ipe crack and split, and in those cases the builder also failed to anchor seal the ends of the boards during installation... Beth -
There ya go Rick, you can be the new centuries humpty dumpty. lol I like Ted Nugent's way of putting things. Being an optimist though, I know I will die some day, but that day will be the way I choose...if ever I do. Rod!~

Ipe advice
Beth n Rod replied to Mountain View's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I don't recommend anything longer than 6 months. The cracking can become to extensive by the year mark. But to answer your weathering question: Ipe contains extractives that are basically impermeable to sealers. Allowing weathering to take place can deplete the extractives close to the surface and give sealers a better chance to penetrate and last longer. Washing with a percarb or an acid alone does not (according to our evaluations) aid in penetration. You could however wash with a caustic stripper at low concentrations and expedite the removal of extractives but it still does not help as much as the weathering process. To answer Mountain View's question, get yourself some defurring pads or Osborn brushes and finish the removal with either of them. Evenly buff the entire deck. I can understand your fear of getting stuff in the water but let the customer know that they will have clean the filters a couple of times or offer to clean the filters yourself if you know how. We have encountered the same situation over the past few days getting all our Ipe customers ready for the season and we buff every deck to finish the prep. Be sure to take advantage of the buffers to remove the silvery areas too, these are fuzz left behind due to the chems. Rod!~ -

That helps a bit Rick. Nice to know that wt is holding up for the better part of a year for someone else too. We have seen it hold from 6-9 month for horizontals. Verticals as you pointed out always show better duration. Rod!~ -
