Help setting up Home Show booth
Beth n Rod replied to dave tausch's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
You'll also want to make sure your booth conforms to these guidelines...otherwise they may ask you to make on the spot changes the day the show opens. This is a must bookmark kind of link. http://www.advancedexposolutions.com/documents/Display-Rules_Regs.pdf Beth -

Ipe Cleaning and Staining
Beth n Rod replied to Mountain View's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
"Each is entitled to his own opinion" is all I will say about that. Ipe' is a very difficult wood to get any product to have any duration on and in direct sun exposure fail within 6-9 months. There are different schools of thought regarding how to deal with Ipe' and they come from different climate ranges so that must be taken into account as well. Setting the expectation for your customer is important. Annual maintenance is necessary unless they don't mind the gray look in which the wood may only need to be cleaned every few years to keep the algae at bay. Rod!~ -

Ipe Cleaning and Staining
Beth n Rod replied to Mountain View's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Hey Ken, You must not read many of Jim's posts. RS is not ALL he uses on ipe, in fact he uses ESI products on it as well. Personally, I would listen to what Jim has to say. He's been caring for wood longer than MANY on these forums. He also does not have an interest in promoting something he sells....other than his services. Beth -

Fast Orange. Get it at HD, Lowes or an auto parts store. Works great. Permatex Fast Orange Beth -
oil based sealers/stains off the skin
Beth n Rod replied to CLASSICPW's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Jamie, Keep Fast Orange (has grit) on the truck and basic hand cleaner. When you are "sticky" and are packing up, wash your arms and legs (if in shorts) and face with fast orange and then follow with the regular soft soap. For hair - if it is a sealer that makes your hair sticky, when you shower let the shampoo sit for a few minutes before you rinse. Same with a liberal amount of conditioner. Then repeat the lather and rinse. The conditioner helps to soften up any residual sealer. Same for the dwell time on the initial shampoo. Helps to get it to detach from the hair shaft. Avoid washing with mineral spirits. It's NOT healthy at all. Beth -

The lazy cheap way would be to put a cleaner on it, wash or scrub it, not care if it looks splotchy, buy whatever junk is cheapest at the store (cheapest is not best) slop in on and then when it dries wonder why it looks horrible and why there are drips and run marks everywhere, then call a pro who will quote you double what it would have cost to begin with , since they have to undo the damage (yes, it's damage) you just did trying to save money. All the chemical burns from applying it too strong, all the splotchiness from improper or lack of neutralization, all the run marks, all stop start and gouge marks you will make if you power wash it since you don't know how to do it right....it will ALL show up big as day. And when you seal over all that, and then the sealing job will look amature and your deck has just become the neighborhood eyesore. And what's really sad, is most of the time the owner will blame a contractor if someone asks what happened...."oh I just hired some guy to do it". HA! Are you sure you want to tackle this? Beth p.s. if you really want solid advice - post a picture of the deck. Asking how to do something with no photos is a guessing game at best.

Thank you for letting us know!!!!! Beth

Hire a pro to do it right, then try the easy step - maintenance cleaning - for yourself if you really, really miss the physical labor....the hot, sweaty, muscle aching physical labor.... Beth
-
If you are that lazy, maybe you should hire someone to do it. If you doubt that you will perform the steps as directed, or will quit part way into it, hire someone. You can do plenty of damage by skipping steps or improvising. Are you sure you want to try this yourself? Beth
