WTW tips
Beth n Rod replied to bigchaz's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
By the way, has anyone got an MSDS for Wood Tux or Woodrich Stain & Seal? I had a really old one for Wood Tux, prior to the VOC law changes, but don't have one since then (yes it is required - I checked - and every other manufacturer whose product we use who had to change due to VOC laws has them updated and online) and I have asked for both and never got them. You can email them - or post them here. Thanks! Beth -

WTW tips
Beth n Rod replied to bigchaz's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We're frustrated. We're tired of what almost seems to be the spring hiccup. We have bought an paid for many pails that were not as expected. Isn't that enough? It's JUNE. It's LATE June. Beth p.s. not necessarily bailing - but exploring options? Yes. We would be fools not to. -

We got ahold of some of the good stuff from '04 and compared it to what is out now... The newer product color is lighter, thinner and smells completely different. It also has a black pigment that always settles out to the bottom unlike the old product which never needed stirring and once you got to the bottom of the pail there was nothing sitting on it but well suspended product, evenly mixed and full of quality. The old product we could warrant for 3 years and still have decks that are holding up quite well in comparison to what has been done last year after the reformulations. Needless to say, we are keeping a few pails for exclusive use on our own deck. We just completed a log home using 5 of the pails and it turned out beautiful. http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/wood-siding-log-home-care/10603-large-logs-house.html#post108627 Sorry to say (never thought I would) but Wood Tux is going down hill. Wish we had the old product available still. It was worth every penny and lasted longer than anything in it's class. Now, I fear it is the same as what is on the shelves in the box stores...a disappointment to my customers and our ability to help slow the deforestation by reducing the need to replace exterior wood before it's time. In all fairness, the same has happened to many others that were great since the '05 reformulations for the VOC restrictions on the Atlantic coast states but it hits closest to home in a product we have staked our reputation upon. We're in the market. Rod!~ -
I understand completely. I started out with a 96 Nissan Sentra with an army blanket on the roof to pad the ladder I would strap on, and the pw'er was sticking out of the trunk. Went all year of '99 that way and my competition and vendors alike laughed at me. I took it in stride but one joke was pretty funny though, they said all I needed was a propeller on the end and it would look like an outboard motor. The very next year...bought a truck! Rod!~

Same type of thing happened to me. Another contractor was working on a townhouse deck upon my arrival and from the looks of it had been at it for about a half an hour so I pulled down to the other end of the row which was the exact opposite end he was working on. Hooked up my supply hose, mixed my house wash chem and proceeded to perform a 3 sided townhouse wash, then applied my chems to the deck, washed it, applied the neutralizer, rinsed it and all adjacent areas and rolled up my hoses and packed away the equipment. To my surprise the other contractor was still at it as I drove by. The deck he was working on was the same size as the one I had just completed and didn't require stripping. In fact, it was in better shape when I first noticed it than the one I did which was quite filthy with about 6-8 years of algae and the siding on the townhouse was aluminum. Don't know what was taking him so long but sheesh. I was on the job around 2 hours max. Guess one can never know too much about wood restoration and pressure washing eh? Rod!~

Applying Seal :Rollers vs. Stain Pads on Deckboards
Beth n Rod replied to fireandrain's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Each has it's place but as an applicator, the roller qualifies better than a pad. We do not use the pad for that purpose but instead as a means to distribute the product evenly across the wood surface, a feat the roll cannot equally accomplish. The drawback to rollers I have also noticed is the nap creates little bubbles which do not always go away and sometimes leave nap on older decks. For the pads, lately the bristles (tiny grey hairs) have been coming off. I attribute this to the re-formulations which contain alcohols and other solvents which may be incompatible with the original design which is for oils and latex based stains. The pads do allow one to get deeper between the deck boards vs the roller which does not and allows drips to go between them and being incapable of reaching them, makes me reach for something else. A brush between deck boards is out of the question as it kills ones back and knees. my .02 - hope it helps your questions. Rod!~ -

Homemade Downstreaming/X-Jet
Beth n Rod replied to OllieOhNine's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Not that it is significant in this thread but I thought I would point out that B.G. did not invent it ... Jobs did. B.G. just took it and altered it as a different platform operating system (DOS) without his consent. From that point, they both developed a GUI. One more popular (windows) the other more stable (Mac). The only other who has tried with any success was the developer of Linux. Rod!~ -

Try it with just water. Works great all by itself on wood. Beth -
Sikens,
Beth n Rod replied to Lenny Schrec's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
They now serve as a back up in case the sprayer has any problems. Contingency plan, you got to have one for just about everything in this business. Rod!~ btw, thanks for the compliment. We'd all be interested in seeing yours and others work too. It's great to see things go from yuck to wow! -
Welcome Chip! :sunshine: Beth p.s. don't forget your signature... ;)

Clear WTW on cedar playset?
Beth n Rod replied to ACSTravis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Several years ago it was called "crystal" - don't know what it is called now, since we don't use clear. Beth -
Clear WTW on cedar playset?
Beth n Rod replied to ACSTravis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Unless "crystal" (which is an amber clear) is still being offered, wtw does not come in anything less pigmented than honey gold. Clear formulations do not have near the UV protection capability as other products with more pigmentation and solid content in them. Those that absorb UV rays will color shift and fail faster than those that reflect them. Rod!~ -
Clear WTW on cedar playset?
Beth n Rod replied to ACSTravis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Clear does not offer UV protection. It will turn grey faster than the Warm Honey Gold or Brown Sugar will. Beth -
Hi Ron! How the heck have you been? Hope life is treating you well! We left the light on for you. Glad to see you found us again. Beth

WTW brown sugar?
Beth n Rod replied to bigchaz's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I'm glad you found those. I had forgotten about them. We have only used brown sugar on like one deck. Mainly we use WHG. Beth -
Just watch your back...sometimes people get vindictive. Been there, done that! Rod!~
