  1. Sikens,

My point exactly. Why put something over something that is about to fail and give the customer more headaches? The new coating will stick well in areas where the wood is exposed and it can have a better hold, but on the areas currently holding a coating that's time is past is only setting up an environment for peeling and flaking which leads to an uneven repair in the future. Besides, you may get the $$$ now but in the future, the results the customer has to contend with may be a deterrent from using you again. If one cannot do it right the first time, don't take the job. (my little saying) To many including the customer who ultimately develops the perception it only makes the rest of us look bad and harder to get the job because of someone else who didn't hold up to standard. 135 views and only 16 votes?!?! This could help in many ways...please vote. Rod!~
  3. My Phone stopped ringing

You can also offer an additional incentive to get the work done in July/Aug... some folks around here do that. We have not had to, but it is tucked away in my mind just in case... Beth
  4. Sikens,

Stripping Sikkens is not as hard as everyone thinks. Yeah, it takes time but thats why they call it dwell time. I have stripped dozens of decks with the stuff on it and the homeowners were very pleased each time. Just keep it wet and dwelling for 15-20 minutes per coat till you can scratch thru to wood with the tip of your spray wand concentrating on the vertical surfaces the most particularly under the rail caps. 8. What does it take???

I'll share a story from a day ago...I placed an order online, and got distracted. finished half of it, and went ahead and ordered it. No big deal, I was going to go back and order the rest a little later. So the next day, I ordered the rest on a new order, it was very similar to the order the day before... I get a call...WOW...asking me if I intended to order the second order or was it a duplicate since it was so similar to the first one. They wanted to be sure I needed the product. I was blown away. Then, I was thanked for the business. WOW! You have to really appreciate when people go out of their way to look out for you and make sure everything is correct. I certainly never expected a call, but I have to say, I was thrilled. WOW..... Beth
  9. WTW tips

Good thing too, it gets worse! Rod!~
  10. K7 went out on me once, this year I replaced it again and plan to each year. The other mounted on the Hydrotek 2 gun unit is a green spring and very tough. 3 years so far (fingers crossed). Stuff happens, it is also a good idea to have an extra unloader on hand J.I.C. Rod!~
  11. Black Spots on Wood Decks

Tell me, how long between wash and seal? Were there any pine trees in the vicinity? Is someone draining a sprayer line and pointing toward the deck leaving caustic spray to land on it and go unchecked? To me, it does not look like a neutralization issue but more of a fungus coming from inside the wood. Curious to hear the results of your submission to the University of Iowa... Rod!~
  12. Mel it is GREAT! One of these days I'll get more of them ordered for other things. Beth
  13. WTW tips

Breath.....deep breaths..... I had two orders in with the manufacturer, one for 10 pails, one for 8. We try to order as we book jobs in order to stay on top of the schedule. I need those pails, and more at this point. Breath.....deep breaths.... Rod spoke to Russell a while back about the non drying issue. Since then we have corresponded frequently and I have emailed and IM'ed them many times. I have been given a number of shipping dates, none of them solid. The online store is supposed to generate a tracking number when things ship but I have asked and asked and asked and have gotten nothing, until this afternoon when I canceled my order and all of a sudden I get an email saying they shipped on the 12th - still no tracking number though. Now I am a patient person, and we are willing to work through issues, but enough is enough. Kevin, I think you hit the nail smack dab on the head. In fact, I would bet money on it and I'm not a betting person. I'll stop here or I might not be a nice person....:taz::angryfire:banghead: Beth
  14. Making the x-jet easier to use

Now if someone could figure out a way to x-jet and downstream at the same time and we could all leave our little buckets in the vehicle/trailer etc...and get rid of the back problems from running back and forth with one maybe I could let my current chiropractor retire early. Ok, maybe not, but anyway, I am not into back pack sprayers. With my luck, the darn thing would leak all down my backside and leave me with one heck of a burn...wait, didn't that happen to someone who posted here once?!!? Rod!~
  15. Black Spots on Wood Decks

Hmmmmm makes you wonder if adding additional mildewcide might be worth it... Beth
  16. Paul, Yuck! Thanks for sharing that. Beth
  17. Looks to me like the same effect seen on trex. It's one of two things. Tannin bleed can be deceiving and in this case it looks like it is proliferating at the splash zone (1st 8"-12" from a horizontal surface) and possibly from wicking in some areas. If the wood was sealed without proper cleaning then it is mildew. If the wood is still bare and exposed, it is tannin bleed. Then there is one more possibility but with cedar it is hard to tell due to the nature of the cellular structure and at this stage is only a guess, but it looks like blue stain. It can be bleached with a 2 step system. 1st a coat of sodium hydroxide and once it has dried, then apply hydrogen peroxide. The reaction of the two creates a highly reactive oxidizer which works on this. Problem for the customer is...they will need a professional to do it. Also, this process could damage the fasteners causing them to corrode even faster. In the 3rd pic, there are nails both the heads and points visible on a board and the beginnings of tannin bleed associated with wood stress created by using them but the area surrounding it is acting differently. If they have coniferous trees in the vicinity or other highly pollening varieties, then you have found the contributing source for mildew growth. Have your customer splash some lemon juice on it and observe the results. Rod!~
  18. If it is under a clear coat sealer that is relatively new, then it's going to be harder to get to. Beth
  19. Pool apron wash. Call if interested in the lead. Beth
  20. Porch Pergola equals PITA

Yes, big Big BIG PITA, but the results speak for themselves. Great jobs guys. Here is ours from another link. http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/attachments/wood-cleaning-restoration-decks-fences-etc/7657d1181300551-ipe-brazillian-cherry-furniture-ipepergola.jpg At least we could walk on it to do the top. No spray booth-ability for us. The whole area was flagstone patio below. Rod!~
  21. A short clip on Posting.

    Since it is busy season....BUMP!
  22. Advice on buying new hot water unit

We went two years before needing any service and it was due to my error. Otherwise, it would not have any problems. Just repacked the pump after year 3 and the unloader is still going strong. Just a bit of actual field experience with ours for your consideration. If the 2nd gun bypass is the main concern then I would defer to others who downstream. We don't do any and the 2 gun unit doesn't come with a downstream injector anyway. Hydrotek does sell another unit with an upstream injector but it is a single gun unit (I cut the hose off mine). Depending upon what type of chems you are going to be using...Food for thought. Rod!~
  23. Advice on buying new hot water unit

    We currently use a Hydrotek SC30008KAF 3000psi, 8gpm 2 gun unit (4gpm/gun) and it works great. Rod!~
  24. ATO Honey Teak Deck
