  1. oxalic acid

You're right, I didn't look at it, but poster #4 brought it back up. I'll leave you to it. Rod!~
  2. q? on sanders

We use DeWalt orbital sanders with 60-80grit for exterior wood. Some times you will get a flattened spring pattern if you have a splinter lodged in between the paper and the backing. Many have contested the use of orbital sanding due to its cross grain cutting action which is known to produce an unnatural effect. For those who are into fine wood restoration (interior furniture), orbital sanding is used to remove to bullk of unwanted material and then a fine grit sanding along with the grain is used to produce the most natural finish possible before staining and applying a finish. On exterior wood, the cross grain pattern is only slightly noticeable but keep in mind that when you are sanding wood, you need to leave the capillaries or pores as open as possible to accept a finish. Any finer than 80 grit and you literally close them up making penetration more shallow. Exterior wood needs to accept the product as deeply as possible to gain any reasonable duration expectation. I have used up to 40 grit for grinding down raised grain and then followed with an 80 grit to smooth it out. If anyone complains about the cross grain pattern then you can point out the planing marks on the wood that leaves little ridges like waves in the wood surface too as it came from the mills. Neither is anything that will affect the woods integrity though. It is merely aesthetics. Drum sanders are good for softwoods like cedar and redwood but on pt pine I find it is better to get out a planer, belt sander or grinder to remove the bulk of the material and somewhat flatten cupped boards. Minor cupping may remain but the appearance of the wood is far better than before. I just don't like working while on my hands and knees (knee caps are shot!) Rod!~

  6. oxalic acid

What are you looking to clean? Acids by themselves have limited uses and are usually part of a 2 step system of cleaning. One part is to set up an environment that is corrosive and then an alkaline product is added on top to create a cancellation by violent reaction which generates surface activity to help dislodge pollutants making them easier to remove during the rinse process. Some acids when used on certain stains act as an oxidizing agent to remove the color in rust stains and dissolve the oxide residue from the surface it has adhered to for easy removal. Acids can bleach (oxidize) tannin staining in wood, help to remove clay staining from siding and the aluminum oxide residue below capped window trim. Acids can brighten some metals and etch others creating pits. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, will better determine which acid(s) to use. Also, this will help many of us to lead you to the right source for your needs. Rod!~
  7. vines growing on homes ... ???

One other quick note, when you come upon this type of situation...it is best to let the customer know that there will be some evidence of your process left behind and that painting will be necessary to correct it. There is no other way I have found yet to get these vine tracks off of painted surfaces without any adverse effects to the paint other than what has already been inflicted by the vines themselves. Rod!~
  8. vines growing on homes ... ???

Bleach will help. If it is new, the result will be little tracks left where the enzymes secreted by the plant has adhered to the surface. If it is old and dried out, the tracks will come off as well. You will need to let it (bleach) dwell a little longer on the affected areas. Hot water and a little localized short duration pressure exerting strokes should help facilitate the removal. For future reference, do not use water hotter than 115* on vinyl to keep it from warping and buckling. But on the hardiplank type siding you are talking about, the hot water does not affect the surface, only the paint. Finish the job by applying an acid (low concentration 50:1) to help reduce the bleaching action on the paint. Rod!~

  10. Jesus had a child??

It was in another thread but it is of no importance. I just got the impression you did not look favorably upon the metaphysical as a result. Just goes to show how little one can discern from a line of text eh!?!? Rod!~
  11. Jesus had a child??

Interesting that you have anything to do with Carlos Castaneda. After a previous comment in another thread it seemed to me that you were not into that type of exploration. I have all but 2 books and am reading AFAP! Rod!~
  12. Jesus had a child??

Thanks for the link. It looks like some interesting reading. Checked into the author (deceased) and his books and philosophy. This person looks for god without religion. Rod!~
  13. I am not so sure that it is directly related to the pump. The spray pattern and droplet size is determined by the nozzle and the pressure behind it. While the pump supplies the pressure and volume, nozzles have different patterns and atomization potentials. Cone -vs- fan may be an applicable discussion to pursue in order to shed light on your question. Rod!~

  16. Aluminum Roof Help

Sodium Hydroxide will eat the aluminum and dull it by etching. Acids do this too but in a different way. It makes the aluminum turn shiney. Truck washing pro's use acids to bring back the luster to aluminum tanks and trailers but I am not versed in how. Try a test patch and pre-wet the area adjacent to the mortar spills. Acids (phosphoric, oxalic and muratic acids will interact with the limestone in the mortar to dissolve it. Neutralize with bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and plenty of water. Rod!~

I agree magnanimously that we must change our ways. Rod!~
  18. Hi, just got back in. If you are going to let the customer tell you what to put on the wood, then who is the professional? Penofin users in our area have had nothing but problems on Ipe'. I have heard it is a great product, but from what I have been called out to remedy would not be favorable in these instances. The stuff was difficult to remove for maintenance and attracted microbial pollutants which stuck on the coating and promoted accelerated mildew growth. Customers may do research but it is the experience of those in the field that have the real answers. Rosewood oil is an aromatherapy ingredient and the buzz about it is that the tree in which the oil is derived is endangered. The customer would be better off using a Danish Oil if it is the moisturizing properties she is looking for. But she must understand that it will not protect it from turning gray and will not last more than 4-6 months in full sun. Russells product, I believe it's called Timber oil, may be a suitable candidate. Rod!~ ps, stripping Penofin will take HD-80 near full strength to strip...been there done that!
  19. Jesus had a child??

My responses in blue. Others may argue with the input I have made but that only serves to illustrate that nothing is definite where god is concerned. Religion has spread out so much that no two people see things completely and exactly alike about god, the bible, the afterlife, death, etc. I have witnessed paritioners having a heated debate over excerpts from the bible and that lead to one of them leaving the church to join another faith. Now did anyone get that last? Another faith as it is called. How is anyone supposed to believe in any one faith when they can't all believe the same things about god or the bible? Where is the unity? All religions say there is one god but none can agree which one is the one. They don't really know if you ask me. We are all divided. Who wants that more than anything? Divide and conquer. Satan, the devil and all the other names for the unholy one. Listen to your soul. It wasn't written by humans. Rod!~

My responses are in blue. I am impressed that everyone who has contributed to these posts have done so in a very enjoyable manner. Good interaction. Rod!~
  21. Jesus had a child??

None taken. But I was not born to be a sheep. I am not a dependent type person. I stand in awe and wonder of gods creation but know we are supposed to grow. Life is the addiction and our test is to break that addiction. Problem is, we created more addictions and dependencies. Technology is de-evolution of the soul and man from his destiny to live in gods realm. As far as "his" words, I can't place any faith in another man to write gods words without imparting something of himself into it. If and when god speaks, it will be to all of us at the same time. There would be no mistake. Didn't Jesus say that god loves all of his childen? Unless Jesus was speaking literally or the message has been misinterpreted, I choose to believe God plays no favorites. What does your soul tell you? Rod!~
  22. Jesus had a child??

I don't think that something as creative and omnipotent as god ever had the technology stuff in mind when creating humans. God gave us at birth all we needed to navigate this realm. It is now up to us to develop the part between our ears that alters perception and revealing the promised land which is another realm where what we know here does not apply. Higher consciousness and a different state of mind form the basis for our conception and navigation of it. Intent, will and heart will be our vehicles. I am confident technology would not exist there. The way we conduct ourselves there will have to be so much different than how we do here in order to maintain that level. (for lack of a better word)Ever heard the saying "places without names that don't yet...exist" or " it is far easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle than a man with any possession". The saying "let go" is key. This is as far as I have gotten and am still waiting for that cubic centimeter to come into view long enough to grasp it. Rod!~
