  5. Unbelievable! Is this OSHA approved?

This is a perfect example of why I tell my crew..."You never know who may be watching while you work". The commentary made by the cameraman is proof that if you do something stupid regardless of how good the work may or may not be, their opinion is what will get around and not the work you did. I wouldn't want this company working on my property. Rod!~
  6. Unbelievable! Is this OSHA approved?

Amazing. I hope it was the last time he did that without PPE gear, and I hope he's ok! Beth
  7. Warranties come with conditions that are covered and not covered respectively. Sabotage or carelessness on their part is not covered. A warranty carries more weight with our clientele who have been burned by others in the past and are looking for someone to actually back up their words on paper. We do this by popular demand under recommended products that we have found capable of warranty. Some decks are not warrantable due to severe neglect and disrepair.btw...why do you answer the phone after office hours? An automated attendant works great and you can get the messages in the am when your office opens. Just a thought. That is part of the taking control of the company and not letting it control the owner approach we have initiated and I tell ya, it's nice to have set hours to get back to family life. Rod!~
  8. Still, it is an important distinction to be made between cleaning and stripping Jarrod. How you do it and with what chems is up to you but the scope of work involved in each can still be pretty much the same. Cleaning as Jarrod does, means you don't have to defur the wood before sealing and the process of cleaning takes places easier and faster where in contrast to stripping, it likely takes longer to accomplish with additional time needed to possibly defur the wood which all constitutes the higher pricing. When attending a deck or other wooden structure for the first time, we always take it back to bare wood unless the client has a product installed they want to continue with and does not need to be stripped in order to provide a favorable result. This is rare though. In order to warrant our work, its our way or no way literally. This is a line we draw because one cannot expect to warrant someone else's work you are only cleaning and re-coating. The reason supporting this is that in the vast majority of cases, it cannot be determined if the proper preparations were made and if the application was done according to mfr's specifications. Better not to get bit than to have to cover a possible lemon job. If it helps, we only warrant products we recommend contingent upon the species of wood and it's ability to sustain the product we install. Hopefully, this will help you as your company grows to structure your pricing to fit your costs better. Clean $$$+ Strip $$$++ Seal $$$+ Prime and Seal $$$++ (solid stains) Rod!~

  11. Aren't we blessed

I am glad that Jeff and many others can take everything in the perspective that people have. Yes, we do have different points of view but networking gives us another way of looking at things and lets us decide what we will do with it. All is learning and yes...life is good because we have really cool people here. Blessed? Me?? Nahh, I just have 2 cats that shed all over the place and make me sneeze. I love em but my sinuses don't. JK... all kidding aside, I hope I can consider those I have met along with those I have yet to meet a friend. A friend in itself is a blessing. We do have a great group of people here on TGS and after meeting so many members at the RT's, I understand them better when I read their posts. We are all people living our lives and they intersect here on TGS. Rod!~
  12. Political thread jump start :)

I have no guilt here nor accept blame for anothers actions. :taz: Funny you should say that you are seeing colors. I ended up firing a guy who was faking sick to get out of work and saying just that! My thoughts were (what was he seeing before?...monochrome?) Rod!~
  13. Political thread jump start :)

Go get some sleep Ryan and thanks for your perspective. This is what I was trying to get at but your point is what I was trying to make...take away the lure of it. You have a very diplomatic way of speaking and is level headed. People experiment, indulge, abuse and lose control to drugs but it is a personal choice whether in the company of friends or alone, it is a choice. Drug dealers, have been known to purposefully introduce drugs in order to create a dependent. If that type of market were eliminated, this would go away. Your Jamaica relation was what I had in Nassau. People would walk up to you and ask you point blank. I just said no thank you and they left. The only thing I don't agree with is demonizing drugs. Education on what they do and the dependency they create is paramount. Children learn well in the early years about what is harmful and later in life with the other postulations you made in place would make it something more of a nuisance instead of the taboo glamor it now has and easier to turn down. A lot more needs to change in this countries way of thinking in order to get anywhere with drugs or society in general. But that's another subject. Rod!~

I want to thank you for taking the time to create this questionnaire as it shows you care about things and are reaching out for help to initiate change. The membership (past, present and future) depends on this type of outreach and in order to be involved cannot do so with out it. Rod!~

  17. Hydrogen peroxide

There is a release of enough energy during the catayltic decomposition of 65% peroxide to evaporate all water and ignite combustible materials. Most cellulose materials contain enough catalyst to cause spontaneous ignition with 90%. ... Concentrated peroxide may decompose violently in contact with iron, copper, chromium and most other metals and their salts, and dust (which frequently contain rust). Source: NIOSH-chemical reactivity [C.A.S. #7722-84-1] Di-Sodiumperoxidicarbonate aka Sodium Percarbonate aka percarb is another form of hydrogen peroxide which is easier to get and safer. Hydrogen Peroxide, Stabillized can be used for cleaning but the problem in commercial cleaning is that it comes diluted to make it safe for some cleaning but with the catalytic decomposition of metals it comes into contact with can be a problem. If you are cleaning a deck for example, this would have reactions with the fasteners (nails, screws etc). The best thing to do is stick with what is common. I have no suggestions on what to do with a 55gal drum of hydrogen peroxide regardless of the concentration. You may be able to sell it to a manufacturer if it is still within it's expiration date. Rod!~
  18. Belonging to Multiple Orgs

Well, we belong to different orgs for different reasons. The Power Washers of North America. PWNA - it's a pressure washing org BBB BBB - this is probably our most important org we belong to - everyone knows this org and recognizes the logo. More people tell us face to face that our membership in BBB is important o them than any other logo we are affiliated with WRAPI - Wood Restoration and Preservation Institute WRAPI - wood org - makes sense for us ***** - Contractors On The Move ***** - another great mobile cleaning org - its not just PWing Time for coffee... 19. If it is paint, you have a challenge to remove it. For the money, your best bet is to wash it thoroughly to remove as much paint as will readily come off. (this is mostly going to happen on the rails and steps not covered by the patio roof. Then, when dry, go and prime all the bare areas first and let dry. Apply a second primer coat and a first coat over the existing paint. When dry, apply a coat to all the primer only areas. Let dry and then do the whole deck. This will help to level the paint and give a better result. You cannot guarantee the work due to the lack of a complete strip. But this is a cheaper alternative than trying to strip the entire deck and less hazardous to the potential renters. This is not the best way to do it, but once paint has been applied to a deck, you can't go back to 100% clean. $2.60 will cover you on this option. Using Eacochems products (Stripsol & Stripper Cream) you can get 98% stripped with the understanding that it may not get it out of the cracks and charge $3.20/sqft, apply a solid stain and still make some money on it. But I doubt they will want to part with the dough. Rod!~

  21. You said the "P" word! Wash, sand as needed to even out areas that are flaking, peeling, etc., then PRIME and stain with a solid. This is not an easy job....and you can forget stripping it...you need a paint stripper and that is nasty even dangerous work. If you decide to do it, wear PPE. Beth
