Ken, Great post. Thank you! :) Beth -
And here is this: On The Job Training. None ever considers the costs of labor wages lost in minimally productive periods for training purposes not to mention those of the person(s) having to conduct the training who is not working anywhere near core efficiency. One could say that it would be made up in that person becoming productive, but how many trainee's does one have to go through to find one that becomes productive? How does one recoup those costs for the numerous individuals who do not work out or quit? You don't! Minimum wage is a joke because noone in our area is paid it. People won't come to an interview for anything less than $12.00/hr and even then the capabilities of those individuals who do show are mostly unskilled , untrained, inexperienced uneducated and worst of all unmotivated. And the topping on the Sundae is that they want to be the Supervisor!!! Sick leave, group insurance, holiday pay benefits, bonuses, unemployment insurance, workmans compensation insurance...they are all gimmicks to motivate the work force but often we (the businesses) are left footing the bill and struggling to make up for lost time that this pampered work force creates. This is what I have learned. Now I am on the lookout for stuff like what Jeff posts because it does affect our business and our families future which is provided by this business. I love what I do, and I don't mind going out and bringing in new blood to help, I just don't like outside forces acting against my will or our companies well being. Rod!~

Yeah, and my question is this: what's in it for him? I say; Keep your legislation off my business especially when it comes to what benefits my company provides. I have had enough slackers in the past who have drained the well keeping those who have earned them from getting good benefits. This type of legislation only serves to drain the economy and further spread the poverty/affluent gap in an effort to dissolve the middle class. Ted Kennedy has not shown to have had the small business mans interest when making his bills. Hell, he is well off, why should he care whose business it hurts as long as it isn't hurting him directly? With his longstanding record in office being one fraught with problems and retributions, he has no business making any decisions for anyone else. Off my soapbox now. Rod!~

how to handle non-paying customer
Beth n Rod replied to Curb Appeal's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Well I would believe that....EXCEPT...something was sent from the same area 4 days AFTER the day the check was supposedly mailed, it is here, the check isn't. It's BS. It was NOT mailed. It's just another lame excuse... Beth -

I'd rather fuzz the wood up, then buff it off quickly, and apply copious amounts of stain to the (now) absorbent wood. 20:22:32 [Message] Littlefield : Yes, wetter is better. Go drink a coke, or beer if you're a painter. 20:22:47 [Message] Rod : I find we always need to defur the deck after stripping anyway so I let the stripper dwell as long as needed. 20:22:54 [Message] Russell_C : Agitating with a brush will also speed the process up 20:22:56 [Message] Littlefield : Bingo 20:23:13 [Message] Littlefield : Bingo to brushing and dwelling and buffing. 20:23:24 [Message] davidv : Great 20:23:37 [Message] Russell_C : When you are dealing with multiple layers, you can often seperate them with agitation rather than waiting for them to fully emulsify 20:23:49 [Message] BarryM : hey David use your dirt killer......lol 20:23:51 [Message] Littlefield : Less labor cost to figure the buffing than try to get the timing exact on a latex or acrylic. 20:24:11 [user Status] Rod -> Away 20:24:36 [Message] Littlefield : And with the brush, you're not getting rid of the stripper like with a presure washer just to find out it's not coming up yet. 20:24:41 [Message] davidv : these are up and down decks 20:24:59 [Message] Littlefield : Two stories? 20:25:08 [Message] davidv : just keep bottom one wet 20:25:14 [Message] davidv : yes 20:26:09 [Message] Russell_C : David, that would depend on the total square footage and if you are going to be able to complete them both in the same day 20:26:42 [Message] davidv : I should be able to. there 16x32 20:26:53 [Message] Littlefield : The product I use on these things is very expensive materials wise, but very cheap on labor. I still think there may be an application for a gel here. The larger the project, the more sequencing comes in to play. 20:26:53 [Message] BarryM : what do you guys defur with, what tool? I have some of those old defurring pads that BethnRod used to sell and I put them on my cordless drill but its a pain. 20:27:10 [Message] Russell_C : Once the chemical has worked, the rinsing off doesn't take very long. Slather them both up at the same time. 20:27:18 [Message] Littlefield : On defurring, makita 9227c with an osborne brush, not pad. 20:27:46 [Message] Littlefield : This time of year, keeping them wet shouldn't be too hard I guess. 20:27:49 [Message] davidv : great...i had thought about that 20:28:05 [Login] aspen contractors 20:28:05 [Join Room] aspen contractors 20:28:09 [Message] Russell_C : Rich, how did you like working with the hang time to slow drying? 20:28:10 [Message] davidv : It'll be late spring 20:28:12 [Message] Littlefield : I was concerned most with the railing system as far as wetting and keeping wet. 20:28:29 [Message] Russell_C : Welcome Aspen 20:28:34 [Message] aspen contractors : Thank you 20:28:40 [Message] davidv : railing on top deck only 20:29:12 [Message] Littlefield : It does work, to slow drying. Just don't add too much. WE turned one 5 gallon pail into jello. 20:29:20 [Message] Rod : If the lower deck is below the upper and gives it a great deal of shade, the lower one will be your greates challenge. 20:29:43 [Message] Rod : oof greatest 20:29:45 [Message] davidv : that's it exactly 20:29:47 [Message] Littlefield : Adding water and mixing just gives you chunks in water. 20:30:03 [Message] Rod : paint strainer will help 20:30:13 [Message] Russell_C : Rich, thats why I don't push that pruduct much. It can be tought to get the hang of 20:30:17 [Message] Littlefield : Aspen, are you from colorado? Jst guessing 20:30:29 [Message] Littlefield : DEck guy or log homes? 20:30:36 [Message] aspen contractors : no wife was from there. we actually reside in maryland 20:30:36 [Message] davidv : bottom has a hot tub on it 20:30:47 [Message] aspen contractors : learning the deck ropes 20:30:49 [Message] Littlefield : Like the name 20:31:01 [Message] aspen contractors : thank you 20:31:14 [Message] Rod : russ, I have tried adding a foaming agent to hd-80 and it acts like a thickener but with the effect of making it keep from drying so fast and it clings better. 20:31:43 [Message] Rod : Where in Maryland? 20:31:49 [Message] aspen contractors : aberdeen 20:31:52 [Message] Russell_C : There are several foamers that you can add once it is in a liqud solution that will work 20:31:54 [Message] aspen contractors : northeast 20:31:54 [Message] Littlefield : Anyone try using one of the Stuttner guns to really get the foam going like the Kec guys? 20:32:09 [Message] Rod : anyone in particular that you suggest? 20:32:20 [Message] bethnrod : Hi Rob!!! 20:32:23 [Message] Russell_C : You have to be careful not to get ahold of one with the wrong surfactant type or you will find yourself rinsing forever. 20:32:26 [Message] aspen contractors : hey beth 20:32:30 [Message] Littlefield : I guess Matt Bryan would be the one to ask 20:32:43 [Message] Rod : noted! 20:33:07 [Message] BarryM : Does anyone DS their stripper? 20:33:26 [Message] Russell_C : We make a stripper designed to be downstreamed 20:33:36 [Message] Littlefield : Talking to a guy today that has a blasting media that is microbialcidal, is that a word? 20:33:37 [Message] Russell_C : it is safer than DS something like HD-80 20:33:38 [Message] Rod : no, we use a pumptec sprayer for all stripping applications 20:34:04 [Message] Rod : you mean antimicrobial? 20:34:20 [Message] Russell_C : He means they soak the cob in enzymes 20:34:34 [Message] aspen contractors : rod od is pumptec and certain kind? 20:34:34 [Message] Littlefield : Its proprietary, but I'll keep you guys posted, he's supposed to be releasing it soon. 20:34:47 [Message] Russell_C : or they've empregnated it with an anti-microbial 20:34:49 [Message] Littlefield : Rod, thats right, and Russ, I don't think its cob. 20:35:01 [Message] Littlefield : I'm thinking bakin soda with extras 20:35:11 [Message] Rod : the decker 5'er. We have the cart version and the pump set up only versions. 20:35:24 [Message] Russell_C : I have seen that done with blasting media for dams and hydro electric plants 20:35:49 [Message] BarryM : David u need to come over for some more deck lessons? 20:35:50 [Message] Littlefield : baking soda is used for mold remediation 20:36:08 [Message] Russell_C : they will use cob in those cases because it ois much easier to recover 20:37:08 [Message] Russell_C : Rich I spoke to someone from your neck of the woods today 20:37:09 [Message] davidv : Why more honeydo lists lol 20:37:23 [Message] Littlefield : Boil the water, and you have quick made grits, right? 20:37:37 [Message] Russell_C : They were talking about cob blasting a house 20:37:39 [Message] Rod : davidv ???? 20:37:44 [Message] BarryM : I got 12 to do this spring 20:37:45 [Message] Littlefield : Russ, really? 20:37:51 [Message] Russell_C : yes 20:38:33 [Message] Russell_C : You are in/near Ellijay right? 20:38:37 [Message] davidv : did Barry's honey do list on my labor 4 learning 20:38:40 [Message] Littlefield : I'd offer to help, but I've got two going right now. 20:39:03 [Message] Littlefield : yeah, right in Ellijay, r u serious? 20:39:12 [Message] Littlefield : or is it me? 20:39:15 [Message] Russell_C : Well sure 20:39:22 [Message] Russell_C : no, it's not you 20:39:43 [Message] Littlefield : If they aren't cheap, I don';t mind... 20:39:59 [Message] davidv : Maybe, Barry we'll see 20:40:26 [Message] Littlefield : Are they new in the biz? how to handle non-paying customer
Beth n Rod replied to Curb Appeal's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Just speaking in general, I'm going to climb aboard my trusty soap box for a moment. When a person performs a service they have a right to be paid for that service. What I absolutely hate, are excuses. Now I understand that from time to time a client might have trouble paying on time. But if you are on a payment schedule, don't lie and say you sent the check when you didn't. That just burns me up. It's far better to be honest than it is to lie and say something was mailed only to find that two days later when it should be in your mail, it's not, and a week later, it's still not. Don't avoid my calls, don't make excuses, just be honest. People deserve on an honest response and to me, it is the only correct one to give. Don't mind me...I'm irritated and waiting for a check!!!! Why this business
Beth n Rod replied to charlie's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I sympathize with you there Jim, we are just beginning our slow season and don't really look forward to the cold winter months except in their passing for the arrival of spring. My question is, why aren't you working more indoors? Rod!~ -
What did you do before becoming a Pw'er?
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
There's a great deal of diversity in knowledge and experience here on TGS. This is soooo cool to read. Rod!~ -
Over the years we think about these things every time we get into the vehicle to use the equipment and wonder what else we could have done to make it better. I have to keep our vehicles tidied up more frequently due to public impression, especially in the upscale neighborhoods where some of our clients like to take a peek into the vehicle out of curiosity. This has led to thinking up ways to keep it organized and the cleaning easier so that I don't infringe upon my own down time. Going to round tables has given many a pw'er an idea or two and helped us all to economize our setups and configurations to work better for us and save us time. Good work on the set up Jarrod. Rod!~

Why this business
Beth n Rod replied to charlie's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ground floor opportunities don't come along very often and are glad we took the leap and got started when we did. There is more competition now but our name is already established and the reputation is favorable. I have been looking for a business for years doing what I enjoy and wood is a hobby subject for me and cleaning is a natural talent so wood restoration fit very well. Beth enjoys wood too and has learned a bit about it through her father who deals in 17th and 18th century antiques. She didn't care so much for the antique business but fulfills her fathers talents for wood in our business. We also love having a home based business and the ability to be with the family more often than working in corporate america would allow with the 2-3 hours a day commute alone. It all fit! -------------- Next~ Rod!~ -
