In Maryland, we pay them on the next normal pay date and it is a part of their employee manual which they need to sign on before training will begin. . Rod!~

It is part of our policy to procure up to 30% to help defray costs and extra for rentals if needed. This is a relief when you may have to wait 30-45 days for the final check. Rod!~

Before Hiring Immigrants read This NOW......
Beth n Rod replied to Rfitz's question in The Club House
I know what you mean but in the real world, those people want the lowest dollar possible to get their work done and that is fine but they inadvertently make the market for the low baller stronger and yet they can really afford the going rate for a legit company. Yes, I sneak a look into the garage as I walk by and yes I do see a great deal of BMW's, Lexus, Mercedes, Porsche and some Alpha Romeo's. And these people don't want to pay what a job is really worth because their education has taught them that hiring a new company is more lucrative for them because they get an eager owner who wants to build the business and can do it for less than the more established ones and still get a decent job provided the experience is there. Plus, they have been there in some way during their past, they know the ropes, they have the inside track. So who is to blame? What does it matter in the scheme of things when most peoples decisions are based upon the bottom line? Yes, we pay well, we have bennies, we have all the bases covered but with that comes a huge price and it's called overhead. The higher the overhead the smaller the market for your price. This could go on..... Rod!~ -

When you seal 1/2 the landing, don't leave a sharp edge to the stain you've applied. Fade it out so that when you come back to seal the other side, you can blend it better. Rod!~ -

Personally, the thing that bothers me the most is the way so many of us Americans look down our noses at anyone who was not born here, and treat immigrants in general like they are subhuman. Many Americans treat immigrants, legal or illegal the same when we see them, and hey folks, by looking at a person you can NOT tell if they are legal or not. Also, I'm really sick of hearing people refer to all Hispanics as Mexicans. It is true that Mexico is one country that speaks Spanish as its native language, but it is not the only one... there are many. Lastly....why are immigrants equated with Hispanics? Ever stop to look at the number of middle easterners, Asians, and others? Why is there legality never suspect? Are they not capable of illegal status as well? Beth -

Beth n Rod replied to Rfitz's question in The Club House
It's not surprising how much is from speculation and fear more than fact. I have no problems with legal immigrants, they still have a good work ethic coming here and they are hungry to get established which equates to them working hard in order to succeed. It would be worth every $ to have one on my team. I was completely embarrassed by the minutemen in our area who had nothing better to do than document all the comings and goings of day laborers and contractors at popular pick up sites. They made such a stink about how these people were taking jobs from the American people. Truth be known, the jobs these people were doing were the ones that a naturalized citizen or second generation citizen wouldn't even want. Most of them complain it doesn't pay enough and want the big cushy jobs with all the bennies and the top dollar pay and then they sit on their cans wasting time and money from those that they work for and drive costs up for the rest of us. I would not be able to hire one of these types because the market wont support the wages they want (ie:$25/hr & ^) And even if I did, I don't very much feel that they would pull their own weight. This is my opinion and it is based upon what I have come across to date during interviews with people who want too much and to top it all off don't even have the skill set to do the job to begin with...they have to be trained first and that is a crap shoot on whether they are going to make it or bail and become your competition. I say quit complaining about the immigrants, more often than not, it's the ones who already live here that are spoiled. I'll take someone with a good work ethic anyday. Rod!~ -
Cedar Millglaze?
Beth n Rod replied to seymore's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Yeah, this one refers to the grain being laid over during planing and then when it is exposed to moisture it raises up and if the finish is not thick enough it will fail. Sanding will fix this type of problem. The mill glaze being refered to is not related to this particular phenomenon. Rod!~ -

Robgio, Thank you for your post. It is appreciated. I share your views. Beth p.s. I'm moving this thread to the Club House forum, it doesn't add to the Employee forum. The content no doubt came from a piece of spam sent to the poster, and I'm surprised it was posted given he said in another post that he doesn't think people learn from reading. -

sodium Perborate
Beth n Rod replied to JFife's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Jon, You are correct and I jumped the gun thinking this sounded like something it is not. "Alkaline solution of Sodium Perborate produces decomposition with liberation of hydrogen peroxide and then oxygen; in the presence of acids hydrogen peroxide is formed. [Merck 11th ed. 1989]" According to the chemical reactivity sheet, this stuff is air and water reactive, a strong oxidizing agent and is also labeled explosive. Take what you need from there... Beth n Rod replied to mdmtexican's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Welcome to TGS! :) There is lots to learn up here. Best suggestion I can make, is grab a big snack and large drink, carve out a block of time and start reading threads. There is also a FAQ are ( look for the FAQ button on the navigation bar) that has basic wood care FAQ's in it, and use the search feature. Folks are glad to answer questions here, but you will also find lot of stuff is here just waiting for you to surf.... I'll stop back later to see how you are progressing! Again, welcome to TGS!!!! sodium Perborate
Beth n Rod replied to JFife's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It is the primary ingredient in OxyClean. It has good detergency and whitening capabilites. Never tried it on wood though. Rod!~ -

Beth n Rod replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
According to the chemical reactivity worksheet, Acetic Acid (Vinegar) and Sodium Hypochlorite (Chlorine Bleach) when mixed, the 2 form a strong oxidizer. BUT!!! the process of mixing them does release gases one of them being toxic. Rod!~ -

mineral spirits on asphalt

Dan.... You have been edited! :lgangry: Beth -
Ah :) Yeah I suspect that is true overall. I doubt that employers are handing out anything other than standard increases based upon annual merit raises, and inflation is growing at a higher rate than that.... I saw milk at $3.99 per gallon here last week at one point. That's just sick considering how much gets wasted every week because it doesn't sell. Beth

Doug if it is not on her property, not part of her plat, then she has no claim on you. Find out if it is within her property line. From there you can build a case about getting paid. I think this is public information. (someone jump in if I am wrong, but when a contractor has to pull permits to build they get this at a local office, yes?) Man...this is the job we all hate...and eventually we all get one like this. Hope it all works out. I'm sure you guys did a wonderful job! Beth -
mineral spirits on asphalt
Beth n Rod replied to clean kentucky's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Doug, Bottom line, it's her new home and she wants it to be in the same condition it was before you arrived. Pardon the analogy, but she's still in the 'honeymoon' phase of home ownership. Personally, I would make it right. It was caused by your employee's actions. Make her a happy customer and she'll pay you and you might just find she becomes a great reference as well. Once it is fixed, go back out in person to apologize with a small plant in hand (whatever is in season there - petunia, chrysanthemum whatever) and let her see your sincerity. Just a suggestion. Beth p.s. what happens when you use mineral spirits on sealer on a deck? same thing is happening here. Driveway needs to be coated in that area.
