  5. Does anyone know what it entails to become a distributor?

Consider distributers supply warehouses like you find in the trade magazines. Do internet searches and compile a database of these sources. Make up a contact list of suppliers and set up accounts with them. You will need capital for inventory and operating expenses. Find a place to set up your biz and place your orders. This is pretty basic but having been down that road, its a start. Rod!~

  12. While the attachment was good intentioned, it is difficult to use if you are using a high pressure rated tip. The alternative was to use a larger orifice size to cut down on the pressure and increase the flow. Still, without actual inspection, you don't know how good a job you have done without getting up on a ladder to inspect the gutters anyway. So to stress a point, why bother? Well, the only in favor argument I can offer is a time we needed to use it for a gutter section that was located above our ladders reach (4 stories almost with landscape drops and all), we used it on an extension wand to reach and clear what we could from the otherwise unreachable gutters. The roof pitch was too steep and covered with algae so approach from that direction was completely out of the question. It helped in this case. While the ads show pictures of it working, it does not fair represent the normal neglect people exhibit to their gutters. They are usually so clogged with debris and large sticks and whatever playthings get thrown onto the roof that makes it unsuitable for this job. A flex wand with no tip works as well while up on the ladder and a zero degree tip to get the farthest away lengths limits the number of trips up and down the ladder. .02 Rod!~

  14. 'Twas the Night Before Christmas Brooklyn Version 'Twas the night before Christmas, Da whole house was mellow, Not a creature was stirrin', I had a gun unda my pillow. When up on da roof I heard somethin' pound, I sprung to da window, To scream, "YO! Keep it down!" When what to my Wanderin' eyes should appear, But dat hairy elf Vinny, and eight friggin' reindeer. Wit' a bad hackin' cough, And da stencha burped beer, I knew in a moment Yo, da Kringle wuz here! Wit' a slap to dere snouts, And a yank on dere manes, He cursed and he shouted, And he called dem by name. "Yo Tony, Yo Frankie, Yo Sally, Yo Vito, Ay Joey, Ay Paulie, Ay Pepe, Ay Guido!" As I drew out my gun And hid by da bed, Down came his boot On da top a my head. His eyes were all bloodshot, His b.o. wuz scary, His breath wuz like sewage, He had a mole dat wuz hairy. He spit in my eye, And he twisted my head, He soon let me know I should consider myself dead. Den pointin' a fat finga Right unda my nose, He let out some gas, And up da chimney he rose. He sprang to his sleigh,.....screaming, And away dey all flew, Before he troo dem a beatin'. But I heard him exclaim, Or better yet grump, "Merry Christmas to all, and Bite me, ya hump
  15. Ballpark pricing for awning cleaning

I have tried the products from Awning Rejuvination Systems of Ft Lauderdale FL. for both vinyl and canvas awnings including their sealer. They are decent products. Here is an example: vinyl & canvas Rod!~
  16. Insurance; Which types do you carry & why?

According to the results of the votes, it seems that all the insurance type others carry mostly is the same as what we need. Gen liability, vehicles, equipment, health, theft/fire/flood, workmans comp, health, dental. I agree with steve r that being without insurance can be a tremendous liability waiting to happen and could cause a business to fold if some thing unfortunate happens. In addition to what kinds of insurance, would anyone have any recommendations of who is a good insurance carrier and why? Rod!~
  17. Closing Rate

Jeff, I am just curious how you can make that claim of 'on time' and if you might elaborate a little further. The reason I am asking is that our company cannot keep a scheduled arrival any tighter than a 2 hour window for most service scheduling due to the various landscaping issues and common yard clutter (for lack of a better word) that can be found around many homes we service which contribute to the time variances we experience. 18. What constitutes a 'Professional' ?

Publicly professional...here is a good set of questions to ask yourself. Are you maintaining a favorable image? Do you speak badly of others in public places and express your views, cuss, use bad manners while in your company uniforms? Do you observe the traffic laws, commit to road rage, express your feelings towards other drivers with inappropriate sign language? Do you go up to public forums and conduct yourself within respectable guidelines? Do you know that in these forums you have an audience and that audience is capable of making a determination either good or bad by the way you conduct yourself on them? Do you realize that people who are not contractors can read these forums and learn good & BAD by what they see posted on them? Do you conduct professional conversations with others on the phone? Do you realize that what you say during these conversations effects your company image whether it be another company or a friend, you are giving an image of yourself to them? Some things to consider... Rod!~

  22. Closing Rate

Our closing rate depends upon the budget of the clientele were are proposing to. Its higher with those that can afford the services than those who cannot. We are not always the highest bidder. For example-Overall when doing a comparison of the two, the math comes out to around 62.50% close rate but that number is low because of the less affluent proposals that are looking for a low price that are included in the formula. If we were to look at the affluent demographic proposals we close around 85% in relation to around 35% close rate of the lower affluent demographical areas. As you can see, it will provide an overall rate that unless taking in all the factors that skew it, will look low. Rod!~
  23. What constitutes a 'Professional' ?

On avg, we see about 6 out of 10 of these come back. Only problem with them is sometimes the responses are annonymous but with feedback. In order to eliminate this occuring, we have introduced a monthly drawing and the only way to get entered is to include your contact info. This still hasnt completely eliminated the annonymous replies but it has reduced them. Rod!~
  24. What constitutes a 'Professional' ?

Thank you Phil and steve r for your replies. Good one Carlos, I am sure it is paying you back quite well to extend that type of customer service. We have something similar but not as personlized as Carlos'. Its a thankyou packet with information for homeowner tips and maintenance including a questionaire survey, a thankyou card and a nice little gift that Beth comes up with as a way of giving something back to the customer. We receive a lot of the surveys back and we gain valuable information from this as the customer is free to list anything that they wish. It also gives us feedback on our crews performance which helps in evaluations for raises. The crews know about these and ask about them during our meetings. Rod!~
  25. Another low-baler.

Licensing is not the answer as many of us who got a license in our home state know, they have no requirements except to know where to come pick your sorry butt up if you dont pay your annual fee. Maryland makes you take a test on the states Home Improvement Commission laws. They have no confirmation or legitimate background checking performed on the information a person submits to show experience in the related field. They just make sure you have insurance for their minimum requirements and you get your license. Thats what happened in our case so to me the whole thing about ensuring only qualified tradesman get a license is a joke. As long as pressure washers are sold on the open market to anyone who has enough money and the backbone to carry it out to the vehicle, we are not going to see any less lowballers. Its funny how many responsible chemical sales houses require you sign for an msds and a release of responsibility before they will sell you a hazarous chemical like eacochem does. Maybe a possible position of an org would be able to persuade these outlet stores to have more involvement in their heavy duty equipment sales and qualifications such as a license or a permit from the local ahj. I dont know but it is just a thought. Rod~
