Contractor's Reaction to New Organization
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
It the same makeup as PWNA when PWNA started.... PWNA was founded by the Hinderliters and Joe Walters and so is the new org PWNA for the majority (until last year I believe) of it's life has been comprised of both vendors and contractors on the BOD - just the way the new org is beginning It will be interesting to see what happens. Could be a really good thing. Nothing wrong with competition. Beth -
Sarcasm...you gotta luv it but fer real, that thar is perty darn tuttin scarry ! Git er done! Perceptions are funny but the reality is quite strange and I have to wonder how many idiots for customers would actually buy that! lol It is understood that many start ups have costs that are significantly lower than those how are more established and have built up expenses in advertising, insurances, lease or purchases for better equipment/vehicle(s), office staff, etc. These can often be misconstrued to be low-ballers rather than just a newer business. We have seen these appear on the horizon and soon show themselves to mark up in order to make a better margin and not leave money on the table. But the letter Jesse wrote is the epitome of the third classification of contractors we are up against. Classifications defined: The 1st classification being the new start ups. The 2nd classification being the established business'. The 3rd classification being the ones who defy all the rules of the game in proper business management and customer service and contribute to the stigma of contractors as a whole. I am not saying that any one of these classifications is better than any of the rest, they are here for the purpose of making a distinction. Rod~

Contractor's Reaction to New Organization

I think we can expect a different approach in this org as it is comprised of vendors instead of contractors according to the contact information. I could be mistaken but no matter, they are encompassing a larger segment of contract related cleaners. Beth had this same sort of idea some time back but it was never acted upon while she was on the pwna bod. I am glad to see that others can think out of the box and embrace the diversities. The benefit of a making them a whole community is a good one from the concept outlined in the 3rd and 4th paragraphs as I take it. Talk about anxious to hear more... Rod~

Ask them. They may not even be thinking about that at this time though. It would not surprise me at all, if this is not on the to-do list at this point in time. I'm sure more info will be coming very soon though. Beth

Competition is a good thing, this could be a huge push for the industry as a whole and be beneficial to all orgs in our industry. Beth

Beth n Rod replied to Matt in Dallas TX's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
This is easy to overcome. You can turn them from thinking about him. Education is the key. If you would like some coaching, call me. I'm glad to do it. Beth -

To be safe, call Sikkens Tech support. I am sure there is a toll free number. There are things that will not be listed as ingredients that the professionals here will not necessarily know about, with regards to if they are in the product. As for S&W Woodscapes, have not used it, have heard both good and fair about it, but we would not apply it. Beth -

How do YOU clean..?

Nope, avoid em like the plague. Rod~ -
Really Innovative! Rod~

I hear that!!! I am not looking forward to replacing the unloader which is due. Tell tale signs is that I have to hold a trigger open to get the machine to start. Otherwise it builds up back pressure and bogs down the engine. I have to have some nuts taken off and the whole thing will have to be taken out of the van to service. I have not had to deal with the other items you mentioned but I keep an inspection going on them every 50 hours. The tanks sure help if you know the property you are going to has a slow flow...I can arrive with the tank full and still be able to finish the job before the tank is drained in most cases. Rod~

In an effort to better serve our growing community here online, we have renamed this forum to make it less specific to one organization. We at TGS recognize our industry is growing, and encourage participation from all of the organizations that serve us as professional contract cleaners. Please feel free to post news and announcements for any organization here in this forum. Thank you, Beth & Rod
-
We're going to put this in the news and announcements area. On behalf of TGS we want to say we welcome this new org, and look forward to learning more as it unfolds. The Hinderliters and also Joe Walters played a very large part in the formation of the PWNA. Their efforts were untiring, their enthusiasms great, and we all owe them a great deal of thanks. We hope to see them respond here. Please let's all give them a warm and rousing round of TGS applause, and thank you all for keeping this professional. Beth & Rod

2 yr?..5yr?..7yr gaurantee??
Beth n Rod replied to Matt in Dallas TX's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
For us, these are the classic signs of a haggler or someone trying to see which way they can get someone to bend. If they cant produce the name of the product, than I say it is a bluff. If it was that impressive of a deal, they would have remembered the name. It could be a test to see if you come up with the name yourself. I have also found out that they have been told something and with the information overload some sales people give, it is hard to keep the facts straight. Our position is this, the longer a product is supposed to last, the more inclined we are to say it increases the amount of neglect a homeowner is likely to have towards their property. We recommend vigilance and regular maintenance in order to keep ahead of mother nature and the relentless exposure to her 24/7. Even if a product is supposed to last 3-5 years, we still maintain that every 2 years the property needs to be attended. Sometimes though, you will come across the occasional homeowner that doesn't care and wants to be less bothered by this and will buy the longer lasting product thinking it is best and settle on neglecting their property. We inform them that the longer a product lasts, the more difficult and more expensive it may be to maintain. Acrylics and paints look like $@ after maintenance coats because of the discoloration and flaking/peeling. Stripping them and reapplying will be more expensive than just regular cleaning and re-coating more frequently. Albeit, they may just take all this as a sales pitch to get them to buy more often, they have a lesson yet to be learned here. Do they wait 50,000 miles before having the oil changed do they? Do they wait till the car runs completely out of gas and pushing it into the next station to fill it! You have to find an angle they can relate to for them to understand the mentality they are currently using and the best thing for them to do in the long run. Rod~ -

Beth n Rod replied to Matt in Dallas TX's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
A fence is not a deck. Verticals and horizontals don't perform the same way with the same product applied. You will get more life out of a vertical than out of a horizontal. How long? Depends on the product and the exposure and the upkeep. If I may make a suggestion....let the client know that typically the first spots to look at on a fence to see how it is performing, is the lowest portion from the ground up about 2 feet. This is the area to watch, it may or may not need a light wash and touch up, again depending on many factors. But letting them know up front may help. They will ask why....this is your splash zone. Water will bounce up onto that area. It will be the most likely spot to look for dirt and mildew. Hope this helps some. Beth -
Henry - Found it in an old post of John's... http://www.buckettrucksusa.com/ Beth
-
I heard about it from John T. and I'm sure he still knows the place. Beth p.s. if you find the link, shoot it back my way. It's not one I meant to lose track of.
-
Henry, I used to havea link to a place in PA that has what you are describing, at good prices. Do a search for: utility trucks used pa stahl and see what you find. If I find th elink I'll pass it your way, but it was like ayear and a half ago.... they had box truck, large vans with bucket lift, the whole enchilada. They were used and from State of PA's fleet. They sell them cheap, and with miles as low as about 50K to 70K. Beth
-
I couldnt answer about the cube truck since we have not used one. But it sure is better than a regular van and more maneuverable than a truck. No D.O.T. requirements because of the lack of cargo. The equipment is permanently mounted and is considered a service vehicle. The amount of fuel we transport is limited to the skid's tanks and a spare 5 gal. gas container. The mpg was another major point to consider along with it using diesel. We get 18-24mpg depending on load and driving conditions. Not bad when you consider my Ford Ranger XLT and a Chevy S10 only gets 17mpg max. when empty. Rod~

We have used a deck brush before for agitation. That can be helpful also at times. On the other side of that coin, you can agitate a rust stain when treating it with acid as well...not to go off topic, just remembered it is all... Beth

Yeah...or people, animals, plants, kids toys...etc.... and how many guys who do this wear the correct PPE? I wouldn't want a face full of this stuff, no way. Or on arms, legs or any part of me. Ever breath this stuff in and feel the burn? Don't get me started on safety. Off the soapbox. Beth
