  3. How is your 2005 season going?

Craig, Congrats! Would love to hear more about the coatings biz... Beth
  4. Jim, I heard this from Russ, about the same time he first released Wood Tux. As I said this was about 3 years back. Since then I have heard it from others... you, and Everett to name two more off of the top of my head. I had one person tell me they knew several people who do it. I know you are not the only one doing it. As for you not sharing your expertise, well how does anyone know it's your idea if you don't talk about it. If you don't share your knowledge how can it benefit others and help them grow? Beth
  5. Jim, Others can also have ideas too. At least the others are doing something to further the contractors ability to provide a better service for their customers. We would appreciate efforts to be helpful and contribute here unlike in your latest posts whereas the negativities and insinuations are not acceptable topics for this bbs. Please edit your post. Rod~
  6. roller pump running backward?

Not sure I understand how you are powering it from the engine. Are you using the engines electrical system or the generator? Also, what kind of pump is it? Flowjet, shurflo...etc... Running a pump backwards can put strain of the area of the diaphram and seals not meant to be under pressure. Rod~

  13. Hurricane cleanup advice wanted!!!!!

Be proud of your equipment. We started out with used refurbished cold water units, and went from there. It did the job on a budget. I went surfing for site like what you are looking for and found one, where you register your company and they may or may not need you. I know there must be a number of them. I did see an article on one of the sites, talking about contacting the Army Corp of engineers. It seems they were lining up subcontractors. I would look up the American Red Cross, and also look at the Govenor's sites for the states you are interested in helping. If I come across any I'll post them here. Hope this helps, and by the way, I'm glad you posted. Please don't ever feel shy about that. It's the last thing we want. Beth
  14. Giant Log Staircase

Thanks Cindy. We hope you'll find the forums helpful. The client services area of the forums is relatively new. We thought it migh be nice to have an area where consumers could ask questions and get professional answers. This forum began as a contractor's forum and has evolved from there. There are some excellent wood care folks who check in frequently. Beth
  15. Giant Log Staircase

Cindy, It's a breathtaking home. I can certainly understand your desire to maintain it correctly. Can't wait to see other photos. Beth
  16. RS users are so very touchy. I am not one to discredit it but I have spoke about my experiences with it and from a professionals point of view who is concerned with the long term prospects of a sealer that my clients want for their outdoor structures. If that is to be considered discrediting than consider that I have talked with pierce and others who have told me how to use it beyond the labeled directions and I have still been disappointed in its performance in too many cases in addition to those who I mentioned before that it will last up to five years. Codswallop! For these reasons I choose WTW because of the reliable results that we have seen and the predictability in the finish. A one coat system is what it is generally discribed for and the addition of a moisturizing step for older more weather wood is a step towards a comprehensively responsible program for helping to make wood last longer which is what our company is primarily about-slowing the deforestation by maintaining the existing wood structures. Regardless of who's idea it may have been, it is obvious that we are on the right track. I think ultimately the benefactor is going to be our customers. Rod~
  17. Giant Log Staircase

Can't wait to see the pics! Beth
  18. James, I heard Russ speak about it the same year he introduced Wood Tux, which was more than a year ago - Wood Tux is 3 now I believe. (It was more than two years ago at this point) I have also heard other folks speak about this, you are one, and there are others. I don't know who honestly should get credit for this idea, but truth be told it's probably not someone who even visits online. But to me, it's interesting that even with the buzz of people talking about it, what other company has formulated a two step product system for sealing wood? Beth
  19. HAppy Birthday Rod!!!

  22. Need to clean and seal 3 Decks???

Clifford, You are in good hands here. I suggest talking to all of the GA contractors who respond here. I'm confident you'll come to the right decision. Moving is hard work. You want to get the house set up just right, get settled, and start living. Let these guys help. The last thing you want is to be in a brand new place you are in love with, and come to dread the deck/porches. Get a pro to do it, and enjoy life. Beth p.s. Love the cabin....as a side note, we have experience with that type of work and will travel for something of that size. Note...for future reference.
  23. Answering the "How long will it take?" question...

I find that many of the clients who ask how long it will take are also under the impression that they may have to be around while the work is being done and need to schedule time off in order to accomplish it. I find it common of people with decks that have no stairs that pose this question. I always let them know that we work autonomously without any need to enter their home and to leave the gates unlocked and the water to the faucets in the front and rear turned on so that we may conduct the work without delay to them or us. If they wish to be present during the processes, they will need to schedule each day as it becomes apparent for us as the week approaches. (most are scheduling 4-6 weeks ahead and this may be pushed back as weather dictates.) More often than not, they will continue about there plans without trying to be there. If they are asking about the number of hours involved, I will ball park it because of the unpredictability of the weather and the conditions that may arise especially in building configurations that are condusive to vortices and wind tunnel effects that make our job take longer. There are so many variables associated with this question that I cant possibly name them all here but I think I have made a good dent... Beth's reply is a good one considering that it is usually posed after the client has seen the totals and starts to try to figure out costing on their own to justify the expense. Many just dont know or understand the world of contracting. Rod~
  24. Answering the "How long will it take?" question...

We get that from time to time. However long you tell them, make sure you tell them how many people will be doing the work as well. Example: 3 hours to wash + 3 hours to seal x 2 men = 12 labor hours, plus travel time and time to load and unload the vehicles. It's not just the 6 hours they see your crew there over 2 visits. Employees are on the clock during this entire period. If homeowners are considering doing this themselves we let them know that if they were as seasoned as we are, one person would take 12 hours by themselves, given that labor tasks are divided among the crew. We then illustrate that someone inexperiences may take up to 4 times longer, and we have seen homeowners work for weeks ( plural) on the same deck. that usually does the trick. ;) Beth
  25. Chemicals

Both BUT...the vast majority of what we do involves wood, so powder gets our vote. Beth
