  1. PWNA Members Invited To Bid

I just got an invitation to bid via email. This is the REAL deal here folks... I didn't have to ask for it to be sent either. What a nice benefit! Beth
  2. Wicked Spider!!!

The worms crawl in...the worms crawl out....
  3. Need to clean and seal 3 Decks???

Behr has had some serious issues in the past. http://www.branmac.com/classactions/behr.htm There are much better products out there. Beth
  4. Wicked Spider!!!

This should comfort those of us who fear these little buggers... http://www.natureofcreation.org/articles/spiders.htm Can anyone identify this one? I thought it was cool looking. Of coures, it was not crawling on me either... Not a very good photo tho...took it a couple years back. Yellow with purple as I recall. Very Halloween-esque... Beth
  5. Need to clean and seal 3 Decks???

That's alot of area to cover, and it appears to be elevated as well. Personally, I would hire a pro for this size job if you have never done something like this before. It's a huge undertaking. Doing the outside of the rails alone will be a challenge. I hope those are removable screens. If they are your wash and sealing will be easier. By the way, nice deck and porches! Enjoy your home! :sunshine: Beth
  6. Delco products

You need to look at the MSDS sheets for the products, look at the active ingredients, and run them through this tool. Mixing chems can be highly dangerous. http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3825&highlight=chemical+reactivity Download the chemical reactivity worksheet. Be safe. Beth
  7. Need to clean and seal 3 Decks???

Welcome to The Grime Scene. If you have any digital photos of your decks, you are welcome to post them. Properly cleaning and sealing 3 decks as a novice is a very large undertaking. If you are set on doing tis yourself, I would suggest you not use the Behr product, but consider instead one of the products that the Pro's here discuss. THere are a few that are very popular. If you are willing to consider hiring a pro, you might also want to place a thread in the Job Leads forum, located directly beneath this one. We have many members, worldwide at this point and you may find someone in your area. Welcome to the forums, we hope they help you. Beth
  8. I personally think he is much better looking than the "Ken doll"! ;) But I might be biased. End of hijack! Beth
  9. Henry, We used to use ABR products also, and I have to say the stench of the sealer was enough to make me want to not let Rod into the house. YUCK! We had a customer once who was thrilled we were there to seal the deck, but neglected to tell us they were having a party that evening. The husband was glad to get it finished in time, but the wife, well, she was not as she was the one with visions of an outdoor party ( a vision we wish she had shared!). Don't sweat not remembering exactly which is what. I just want to make sure the readers here are not misinformed. No big deal. We used to use the X-180 for brightening decks many, many, many moons ago. I think we have an empty pail now which is being used to store various things on a shelf. You have to love plastic containers as storage bins. Have a great day. Beth :groovy3:

09/14/05 21:27:05 tropicalwave: so theres no messing with how many 4x4, spindles, risers, lattice? etc 09/14/05 21:27:17 tropicalwave: 4 i think 09/14/05 21:27:33 tonyc: 42" seems fairly standard 09/14/05 21:27:44 Russell_C: then use 4 feet 09/14/05 21:27:55 tropicalwave: depends where though, chicago proper is weird with the many porch-deck disasters lately 09/14/05 21:28:16 Russell_C: Well measure lattice by the Sq ft 09/14/05 21:28:31 Russell_C: posts are 2 foot by how ever tall they are 09/14/05 21:28:32 tropicalwave: i do, that was a bad example, my bad 09/14/05 21:29:01 Russell_C: by posts I mean the ones that support elevated decks 09/14/05 21:29:11 tonyc: *whip* 09/14/05 21:30:00 Russell_C: What whip? 09/14/05 21:30:07 tropicalwave: if a rail is 6" wide, just add a sq ft for every 2 feet of rail? 09/14/05 21:30:26 tropicalwave: my bad again.... 09/14/05 21:30:36 tonyc: *whip* 09/14/05 21:30:42 tropicalwave: trying to do too many things at the same time 09/14/05 21:30:44 Russell_C: nope if it is exactly 4 foot high add 5 to the width of the deck 09/14/05 21:31:11 Russell_C: if there is a rail on both sides of the deck add 10 09/14/05 21:31:25 tropicalwave: what does the height have to do with it? 11. Cujo, The Myrmidons stand down. This is kinda funny though. Fear not the opinions of others as we all have one. My philosophy is to respect each as a unique opportunity to look into the person who possesses it and better understand them. I respect the reluctance though, loyalties can get a little overbearing and forget to relate they are one and the same but in relation a different drum. Yours is respected here as well. Peace Rod~
  12. PWNA Members Invited To Bid

I think PWNA is stepping in the right direction. People have been saying for years that they wanted to see how it would effect their bottom line directly. Well, nothing in life is free, but the opportunity to be a preferred vendor, is outstanding. Sure you still have to bid and win, but you have to do that as a matter of business regardless. But that stamp...PWNA Member...well that means something here in a big way. There is also a teaser on the PWNA's BBS about another huge opportunity coming down the pike - to the tune of 20 Mil. This is not chump change. There was also an opportunity to work with Trex this summer for members. Keep up the great work guys. :dancing: Beth:cup:
  13. X-180 was the neutralizer (oxylic based). EFC-38 is not an acid. They are nowhere near the same thing. Beth
  14. Here are some shots of a deck we have been caring for, for 2 years now. There is a shot of the deck the year it was first done, a shot of the deck after 2 years before doing it, and a shot of the deck after the maintenance service. The sunlight int he photos is not the same, but I think you'll get the idea..... Beth :groovy: :groovy2: :groovy3: p.s. 2 yr maint. was a breeze, very little product needed, owners are THRILLED and have been thrilled for two years, because it lasted.
  15. Personal favorite of mine... Wood Tux Warm Hoeny Gold. My suggestion, give it a try. Beth
  16. This deck was washed two years ago, and sealed with Wood Tux, in the Western Cedar color. This was applied in a year that was VERY wet, 5 months of almost rain. Notice, it is NOT overgrown with mildew. Notice also, the amount of color still present. This deck was filthy. Has two years of foot and paw traffic, mud, pollen, etc. on it. Today we gave it a maintenance wash. ( photo on the left is before the wash - 2 years of muck, but you can see howmuch pigment is left from the finish two years ago) I'll put up a wet pic too so you can see how much pigment is left even after a wash at the two year mark. (photo on the right is after washing, wood still wet) The customer was home, she stood outside and watched the whole afternoon, and was thrilled silly about how well it had held up, and how great the wash looked. We also want to say to Paul who visited with us today, we were glad to have you along and to help you out, anytime. Beth
  17. Paul, You are welcome... Good Luck! Rod~
  18. PWNA Members Invited To Bid

This is very exciting news. I'll call HQ tomorrow to get my copy. This is exactly the kind of thing the PWNA nees in order to make a difference for the members. Beth
  19. Call Bob.... 301-332-4919 He wants his rambler washed. Beth
  20. I supposed you could do maintenance with a clear on it, but we don't do that. :whoops: We don't get too many SYP decks here either, most are PT lumber. When we began working on this deck 2 years ago, the owner said the builder was pretty proud of himself for not using PT lumber...hmmm....we have seen plenty of pine rails, where the builder painted them, and the wood rotted because of it, but that's a whole other story...it's odd to see pine rails and PT floor. I'm sure the builder saved money when they built it that way, but it sure cost the homeowner once it was rotting from being painted too wet. :lgbonk: Beth
  21. Absolutely. Once we apply the maintenance coat that's what it will look like, maybe a little richer. Funny thing is, that conversation did happen. I was outside speaking to her the whole time the wash was happening. She's a neat lady, very enjoyable conversation. As for the clear, I don't want to apply a clear here. We prefer to replenish the pigment. If we were to apply the Western Cedar, we could cut that with some clear. If we apply the Warm Honey Gold, not necessary to do it. Personally, I always want to make sure there is some new pigment introduced during maintenance. Beth
  22. Yes!Back to contractor mode[][][][]>>>> If you are wondering about applying a lighter color to it for instance with WHG there will be a different look to it, somewhat more orange than cedar. I will be going over it with WC again to refurbish the top coat. It will be just as rich as it is when wet. So far, I have been very pleased with the maintenance washes and recoats and as Russ has mentioned, the recoat goes farther per sqft but still acts like the original application. I just apply it lighter than a primary application and back pad it to ensure even distribution. Rod~
  23. How Would You Handle This?

Me too...vote for scadoo~ Leave this one and move on, nightmare waiting to happen and I sense flags popping up on this particular homeowner. I also sense that this person has been sold by tv ads and/or little investigation on their part and feel that they are doing the best thing without the benefit of knowledge that they are only complicating things by not following the advice of a professional. There are plenty of others out there who will appreciate your knowledge and experience, they are the ones you want. They probably live next door to this one too! :) Rod~
  24. eating metal

Can you explain this a bit more? Inquiring minds.... Beth
  25. ABR came out with a product years ago (cant find it anymore...thank god! the smell was so terrible that both our customers and the employees were not happy with it) but they still were trying to do the same thing, replace what was being lost after the tree was cut down. The bark is the protection, the oils are the moisturizers. Oil and water does not mix, but alkyds and water do. A moisturizer's part is to keep the wood from suffering an expedited loss of its natural moisture by taking the place of what it can no longer produce itself. The top coat is performing the function of the bark to keep the moisture in and the elements out. This all in all is what Russ has been trying to explain and I think in laymans terms its a bit more readily understandable by the average joe who hasn't yet learned all the the terminology. Ready Seal is in its own classification. It spreads itself out quite well and is very easy to apply without the worry of over lapping or excessive drips due to its penetrative abilities. Wood Tux Wet and DMC are a 2-step system of wood restoration products to help enhance the woods ability to withstand the elements. Many users of RS are pleased with its overall performance and the need for reapplication each year. It fills a need for the speed and ease of application...hence its slogan "goof proof". Wood Tux Wet requires attention to the application and assurance of eveness and proper back brushing or padding in order to acheive the best results for both look and duration. When you get all spiffeyed up to go out, you would usually take more time to get that look you want in order to appear dressed up...hence the slogan "dress up your wood". Now taking these 2 into perspective, price wise each is in its own level and can be used to fill the consumers budget needs. RS costs less and is easy to apply so therefore is capable of filling the requirement of a lower bid. WTW costs more and takes more effort to apply which gives a longer duration for the price which fills the need for those who dont want to have the service performed as often. Each has its market and depending on the type of service a contractor wishes to offer, each could fill a need specific to their clientele and/or demographics as needed. Adding the WT-DMC takes wood restoration to another level of service that can equal better dollar per ticket and overall results in addition to the prestige of being able to truly offer a restoration package that will actually enhance the wood while significantly slowing the aging process it goes through exposed to the elements 24/7. As another person mentioned in the thread, there is room for both products in their lineup and I think this is a good thing because overall, Many contractors offer more than one product in order to fit the needs of both the customer and the species of wood they are maintaining. I think we are all growing here and I hope it doesnt stop. This is cool. Rod~
